Re: NVDA doesn't speak on Windows Log-on Screen

If it were within my power to move this topic to the main group I would, but, alas, Groups.io does not allow it.

I just want to put on record that this topic falls entirely within the group description of what is the focus of the NVDA Group (main group).  If you so desire, feel free to ask again there if Mr. Spivey and yourself don't come to a resolution here.  For the sake of emphasis, here's the portion of the NVDA Group description I'm referring to:

The central purpose of this group is discussing how to use NVDA.  This includes configuring NVDA's settings or familiarizing oneself with its modes and commands.  Discussions about which programs are accessible using NVDA, NVDA add-ons, NVDA tutorials and documentation, and configuring synthesizers or Braille displays for use with NVDA are also permitted.

Let's check the obvious thing first. You've got a braille display, so this should be easy.
Reboot your machine and get to the logon screen.
Press ctrl+NVDA+s to open the Select Synthesizer dialog. Tab to Audio output device.
1. Is it set to Microsoft Sound Mapper? If not, set it to that. Does speech come back?
If it is, just press enter. Does speech come back then?

On my Braille display I can see that I'm indeed on the logon screen and that NVDA is running. Now, if I close NVDA and start it again, it does speak. Does anybody know why this is and how I could fix it? Up to now I just thought that the HDMI sound driver was no good and I used an external USB soundcard to have speech immediately, but now that I have discovered that it's not the HDMI sound driver, I would like to have NVDA speak on the log on screen reliably to free up the USB port the external sound card is currently plugged into.

Bob,

Press the left alt key twice when NVDA does not speak within the worksheet after completing an operation. This should get NVDA speaking again.

To rename a worksheet. Switch to the worksheet you want to rename. Press left alt followed by h, o, r. This is the hot key sequent for sheet renaming. As Brian says, it is an office command, not NVDA's!

All the best,

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that in the next few days. Now for an update on my Excel issue, it's still not working properly despite disabling live preview. When inserting rows, NVDA still refuses to speak on returning to the workbook. As I said in my original message, moving away from the workbook and returning works, but I'd prefer to not do that. Also while we're on the topic of Excel, I have two questions not entirely related to NVDA, but I'm not sure how to go about getting answers.
1. I have two workbooks I need to edit monthly, both of which contain two sheets. The problem is they were created with different versions of Excel originally, so one uses control page up to move to the next sheet and one uses control page down. How do I reorder the sheets to make these accessible using the same command?
2. Is there a way to rename the sheets so that they're not just called sheet 1, sheet 2, etc?

I have dealt with this exact issue. Here is what you do.
1. Launch outlook.
2. Use the nvda key + n to bring up the nvda menu.
3. Navigate to the item called "configuration profiles."
4. In that dialogue, listen for what profile you are on. If it says
default, create a new profile. If it says outlook, exit the dialog.
5. Assuming you need to create a new profile, do not give it a name
but arrow to the set of radio buttons and choose "current application outlook."
6. Exit the dialogue.
7. Follow the instructions other list members have given for disabling
the reporting of table formatting.
8. Ensure you save the profile.
9. Try reading the newsletter.
10. You should find that the excessive reporting of layout messages is
gone.

When you swap out of outlook, you will find that the document
formatting has returned to the original way it was set because the
configuration profile has changed to the default or whatever else you have defined.

I find profiles a really handy feature.

Re: Having Issues with NVDA with Excel and Outlook 2016

Okay, I'm still confused about how to change things. I was able to
create a new configuration profile as described in the message below,
but when I go to the input gestures dialog, I get a large tree with a
bunch of options. Under document formatting, I see one way at the
bottom that says "toggles on and off the reporting of table cell
coordinates," which is what I want. However, I don't see any way to
change it. When I press enter on that, I'm returned to the window I
was in prior to activating the dialog, in this case my Deleted Items
folder in Outlook. When I press space on this, nothing happens, and
when I hit the okay button, I'm returned t Outlook, where NVDA still
reports table layout configurations.

Adding comments to a PDF-file using Acrobat Reader DC

Sandra Pilz

Hi,

I have to add notes to a PDF document using Acrobat Reader DC using NVDA. I am able to see comments from my colleague, but I am not able to add comments myself. I thought I was, but once I have entered a comment and added it, I cannot find it in my document, so I assume it doesn't work.

So if someone could let me know if this is at all possible with NVDA and if so, how to do this, this would be very helpful.
