It is needed on rare occasions. At times, you can't access something properly using the system tray itself and you can with the add-on. At times, the reverse is true.

And whether it is needed isn't really to the point. It has been the custom for screen-readers to provide a system tray dialog since Windows 98. At that time, that was the only way the system tray was accessible. It is so standardized in screen-readers that it should be a part of NVDA, particularly since a lot of users will never know about the add-on. Who knows how many users never learn about this list or other places where they would be encouraged to explore add-ons. At times, you just do something because it makes sense under existing conditions. NVDA developers believe that NVDA should do almost nothing outside of be a pure screen-reader. If taken too far, that is ideology and, as with all ideologies that are followed too dogmatically, results in bad decisions. Gene

There is a windows combination set of keys to access the system trey. It is the windows key, plus b.

The way to turn browse mode off in NVDA is NVDA key space bar. You turn it on with the same command.

You can see if that helps or works. With browse mode off, you are interacting directly with the page and I would think that if that works in JAWS, I would think there would be a reasonable chance it would work with NVDA. In my earlier message, I said that I thought in many cases, there wouldn't be a correlation between what a sighted person sees and identifying accessibility problems in that way. it appears in this case, you can tell. The Chrome browser updates automatically. It should be current. You can find out in the following way:

Open the Chrome menu with alt f. Hold alt when you type f. You are more likely to be in the right place. Up arrow a few times, its much faster, to help and press enter. You have opened a submenu and are already on about. Press enter again. A web page with the about information will load. When the help web page opens, make sure you are at the top, control home, then start down arrowing. You will soon get to a line that tells you if Chrome is up-to-date. Treat the situation as though you were on any web page. go to another one, close the program, do things just as you would if you were on any web page. As far as what is seen is concerned, I don't think there is often a correlation between what a sighted person sees and whether there is an accessibility problem. A link looks like a link, whether it can be activated from the keyboard or not, for example. If others are having the problem, that means it isn't your system. If others aren't, then it's probably something about your system, I don't know what. What the best way to investigate is, aside from asking other Hulu users for comments, I'm not sure. One thing I would do is try Firefox and see if the problem persists. When problems occur, it is important to have a nonChrome based browser available to see how it responds. I don't recall if this was discussed but have you rebooted since the problem started? if not, do that first. Gene

Well I reported issues with some software this morning and the devs told me that they were real bugs but no one had noticed them till now. I've also been in places where people have reported issues and got recognition so yeah, there are bugs that are never noticed.

I can manage with Narrator but the process is clumsy. I just sent an email to the address the agent gave me and, if the changes they made caused this barrier between the site and NVDA, I suggested that maybe they offer that other version of the site as an accessibility option. I’ve seen many a site (Amazon being one), that offered links for more screen reader friendly versions of their pages.

I had Jaws at one time but I had to drop it because it got way too expensive. I’m gonna contact the accessibility people via the email the agent gave me because whatever change they made in their site effectively stops NVDA from letting me access the content I pay for. I tried Firefox and it did the same thing. Even the Microsoft disability answer desk agent saw it. As long as my screen reader was enabled, he couldn’t type anything and it didn’t show content. So, it’s obviously something they did. I don’t think they realize it and it may be something as simple as a cosmetic change. They just wanted to update their look. I can use narrator but it’s clumsy. Surely they’ll do something about this. Thanks so much for all your help. I’ll mention what you told me about having to alter the way you use Jaws. Was yoursa sudden thing too?
