You'd think that there would be a reader now for bios, since the efi os is quite detailed.

On a probook I worked on it appeared like a menu driven program like you would see in a text editor like notepad, why it was never ported to windows is anyone's guess.

Toshiba did that in the day, first a menu then a control panel type program then an app.

One assumes it could be a universal but you need someone to ddo that for you.

Hi
In the days of DOS, there was a suite of utilities which would read the BIOS settings into a HEX file and write them back to the BIOS.  There was no utility, as far as I know,  to allow you to amend the file and, if there had been a way, I am uncertain if the settings could be put back successfully if the file was changed.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to collate a bit more information just from those having
issues with Dell PCs and NVDA at the moment please. If that's you,
could you please reply and let me know:

1) What model laptop you have?

1a) If you know what Driver / driver version you have that would be
great too please.

2) Which version of Windows are you using?

3) Which version of NVDA you are using?

If anyone is using alpha versions, if you use the stable 2020.3 does
it make a difference?

My feeling is this is a Dell / Realtek driver issue, but I'd like to
double check and also collate that information for chasing it up with
Dell and Realtek.

Kind regards

Re: NVDA not reading anything but plain text

Dan Miner

I recently had a different outcome but I suspect similar root issue. For whatever reason, an NVDA setting will change surprisingly and usually for the worse. There is an AppData/Roaming directory under your user profile (use echo %USERPROFILE% in a console if you don’t know yours). You’ll find an NVDA folder there with local settings. I had to delete that directory to restore defaults to even use NVDA in any form (even installer wouldn’t work properly).

I have been using NVDA for years. All of a sudden NVDA stopped reading everything, but plain text.

I have gone through all the typical electron fixes. 1. make sure it is on. 2. turn it off and restart; close browser and restart; 3. check for updates; 4. turn computer off and restart and do 1 - 3 again; 4. uninstall NVDA and reinstall.

So far nothing has helped. The question has been sent to NVDA but the tech person assigned to my question is out until January 2021. He recommended coming here and asking for help.

Re: Do you use plain text email or HTML-formatted? #poll-notice

Thank you to all who have replied.  Someone pointed out to me something I had overlooked completely, since I have been so focused on the absent "Reply to Sender" link in one of the two formats:  BOTH have an email link for the message's sender at the very end of the cluster of links, right after the Unsubscribe entry, and in both cases that mailto email link is enclosed with square brackets.

So until and unless Groups.io figures out why this is happening, the ability to privately respond to the sender of any given message still exists.

There is a difference between the Reply to Sender link and the mailto link at the end of the cluster, and that is that the Reply to Sender prepopulates the Subject of the email created with the prefix, "Private:," followed by the name of the topic.  This can, of course, be changed.  The mailto link just causes an email composition window to open with the To: field prepopulated for the sender, but nothing in the Subject, so you have to put whatever subject line it is you'd like.

Again, my appreciation for all the assistance that's been given.  Although the resolution is not (yet, anyway) the consistency I'd hoped for with a Reply to Sender option there is a viable workaround that's easy enough to use until the issue is resolved.

Hi Quentin,

I didn't experience this issue with a Dell Latitude 5590 that I owned from August 2018 until I dropped and broke it in September 2019! The insurance policy I had allowed me to replace it with a Latitude 5500 but I've been using an old Asus laptop of mine rather than the Dell. I'll be back with my parents for a few days next week and will be able to try out the Dell Latitude 5500 and will be happy to post my comments on whether I experience any issues then :)

My asus G751JL gaming laptop uses RealTek audio drivers and usually requires me to forceably re-start NVDA with Alt+CTRL+n two or three times per day when NVDA grinds to a halt doing things ... I don't know whether this is related to the Dell issue and I don't know how to test it out. I've owned and heavily used the Asus laptop for a good 4 years.

A proposal for figures

Jonathan COHN

Gene has started a lengthly discussion whose main complaint appears to be with figures…

I just looked at a couple of articles on the New York Times.
Essentially, it looks like the pictures are now composed in the following way:
<figure>
Picture with no alt description
Text description of picture
</figure>

This is at least better than a year ago where the picture had the same information in its "alt" tag as the figure description text. The major problem with this is that as screen readers instead of
"graphic Los Angeles"
You get
Start Figure Los Angeles End Figure"
That is unless you are running MacOs VoiceOver with Grouping Navigation.
So for this simple case, where there is an unlabeled graphic contained in a Figure with a Figure caption, it would probably make sense to not use start and end tag reading.

Would this adversely effect performance?
What I am thinking is if
a) Graphic within figure does not have a label
or
B) Graphic with in figure has alt attribute that matches the Figure caption
Read Graphic with figure caption.
Else
when encountering start figure marker Read it.

One thing I am not sure about off hand is if figure tags have labels or are just automatically named by the figure caption.

Thank you to those who responded to the poll.  Now for a follow-up that can't be done as a poll.  Would you please take a look at any Groups.io message, and it can be for any group not just NVDA, and see what the "links cluster" at the very end of your messages looks like.

The two variants I have documented are:

Version 1:
Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.

Version 2:
Groups.io Links:

You receive all messages sent to this group.

View/Reply Online (#444) | Reply To Group | Reply To Sender | Mute This Topic | New Topic
Your Subscription | Contact Group Owner | Unsubscribe [britechguy@...]

Both versions begin with the string:  Groups.io Links, and I'm talking about the first occurrence of that string working upward from the end of the current message.  Since there's an awful lot of bottom quoting that occurs, there can be scads of these contained in a message from quotation, but it's the last one just before the end that's important.

I am trying to figure out if there's a correlation between the use of Plain Text mail and Links Group Version 1 and HTML-Formatted email and Version 2.  I have not yet been able to determine why the "Reply to Sender" link is not present in some messages, and am wondering if it might be due to the email formatting option in use by a user or not.  Obviously, the specific link addresses shown will not be the same as the two examples I've extracted from messages sent to me.  It's the presence or absence of the Reply to Sender link that I'm focused on.

Please send your observations to me privately, either using the Reply to Sender link at the end of this message, if present, or using my email address, britechguy@..., if it is not.

Hi Quentin

Some months ago I raised the matter of the LibLouis Afrikaans grade 2 table not being included in NVDA. The response was that LibLouis developers should notify NVDA developers that the table is available for inclusion. I then raised it on the LibLouis list and as the developer of the table assured everybody that the table was fine for both forward and back translation and should be included in other products which it currently is, except for NVDA. Joseph took part in that discussion. The LibLouis developers seemed unaware that they officially had to let NVDA developers know about the table.

I honestly don't know what to do any more to get the table included. We need it here in our country and it has been included with every version of LibLouis since September last year. Please can you assist.

Kind regards

Hi everyone,

Lazily copying my tweet - so you get everything in one sentence: NVDA 2020.4Beta1 is now available for testing, including  new Chinese Input methods, an update to Liblouis, the elements list now works in focus mode, context sensitive help pressing F1 in NVDA dialogs & heaps more!

As usual, please do report any issues on GitHub.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Merry Christmas and see you next year!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know that today is my last day for the year.  I'll work through catching up on my email and the group on my return on the 11th of January.  In the meantime, if you've read today's In-process, you'll know I've directed people here for NVDA help in the first instance.  I know you'll look after them :)

If you do have anything they need from NV Access, do send it to info@....  Between us we'll try to keep an eye out for urgent emails, otherwise we'll get through everything in the new year.

Most of all, have a safe, happy and holy Christmas and new year.  Please wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and wash your hands.  Most importantly, stay home.

Kind regards, and I look forward to catching up with everyone in 2021!

Quentin.

Re: Do you use plain text email or HTML-formatted? #poll-notice

View/Reply Online (#440): https://groups.io/g/blindandroidusers/message/440
Mute This Topic: https://groups.io/mt/78981424/24134
Mute #admin-notice:https://groups.io/g/blindandroidusers/mutehashtag/admin-notice
Group Owner: blindandroidusers+owner@groups.io
Unsubscribe: https://groups.io/g/blindandroidusers/leave/9551119/1131756394/xyzzy [britechguy@...]
