Sighted folks rarely think in blind terms; when they do, it's usually because they work with us or have appointed themselves our advocates. There's a difference between knowing how to speak another language in order to communicate with more people, and being taught to denigrate your own language as inferior. i happen to speak six languages to varying extents of fluency, so plenty of translation goes on in my mind all the time. However, I don't intrinsically assume that English is superior to all other languages because it's a global lingua franca. After all, the vast majority of the world's population does not speak English at all. Nonetheless, people from al over the world realize that English allows people from different countries and continents to communicate in a common language that they otherwise wouldn't share.
In our case, the language of pointing and clicking is a relatively recent arrival to the computer lexicon. Before that, most computer concepts were understood from a command line perspective. Besides, there is a more neutral and inclusive alternative to "point and click": activate. This one word conveys many important messages, most important, that there are numerous ways to activate elements besides using the physical mouse, and that even sighted users can opt for keyboard activation.
Telling anyone to point and click is like telling them to obtain food by driving a specific car to a specific grocery store. In reality, they could take a bus or train, hitch a ride, ask for a lift, even walk to a grocery store; a specific car make and model is far from the only means of conveyance, just as pointing and clicking are not the only ways to activate elements.

Re: Outlook 2016 NVDA not announcing To & CC fields separately

Whether the issue is corrected, have you tried the read current line as you type? I don't know if you are using the laptop or desktop layout and I don't know the laptop layout, but using the desktop layout, it may be more convenient to use the read current line of object command, numpad 8. You may well hear whatever is being suggested on that line and if it changes as you continue to type. If you down arrow to hear other suggestions, are they announced automatically?

Question regarding interpunction reading

lutztiger.luigi@...

Dear list,

I’ve been using JAWS and NVDA 2017 (prior big update) for a long time. Recently I have installed the current version of NVDA.

It seems like there have been made changes regarding how interpunction is treated in the text-to-speech modules. NVDA pauses much longer at the end of sentences for example. I believe brackets are also treated differently, creating longer pauses. This pausing, probably having some advantages, dramatically slows down how fast I can go through texts and confuses me when working.

How can I make NVDA read text like it used to in versions of 2017 and prior?

Best

Now Sentence nav needs improvements. It works properly with older
version of nvda v19.2, but not with latest one. It misses many words
from the beginning of the sentences while reading Unicode based
languages like Gujarati and Hindi. It Also makes too much gaps between
sentences while reading long literature.

Ben,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

I have downloaded the add-on today called "SentenceNav" and another called
"TextNav". These do the job. So, in response to your suggestion, I
restarted
NVDA with add-ons disabled. This eliminated the functions provided by those
two apps. I could now try out your suggestio. In Outlook, I found that you
were right. When I switched to the active cursor with NVDA + space, the
sentence commands did work. However, they failed to work in NS, Word. Any
ideas?

I restarted the two add-ons and now I have the sentence reading controls in
both Word and Outlook!

I would like to hear from the developers why this strange behaviour is
happening.

Hi Cearbhall

The next and previous sentence commands should be working as normal in
Word.
However, note that they will not work if you are using Browse mode in a
Word
document to navigate by headings etc. Ensure you are in Focus mode by using
the toggle command, NVDA + Space, and give them another try.

I hope this is helpful.

I am using Windows 10, NVDA 2020.3 and Word 2016.

When I try to read the next or previous sentence in a Word document, using
alt + down-Arrow, or alt + up-arrow, I get no response. Indeed when I turn
on keyboard help, these key combinations get no echo. It appears that this
function has been removed from NVDA! I opened the NVDA User Guide and it
still says that alt-Down-arrow is to be used to say next sentence and
alt-up-arrow for previous sentence.

Can anyone explain what is happening? Is the user guide out of step?

possible bug with Numpad Nav Mode add-on

Bob Cavanaugh <cavbob1993@...>

Hi all,
I think I've found a bug, but not sure if it's with NVDA itself or
with the Numpad Nav Mode add-on. The easiest way to find this is by
doing the following:
1. On a webpage, use the letter C to navigate by combo box.
2. With Numpad Nav Mode running, press alt+numpad 2. Instead of
opening the combo box as expected, NVDA says "symbol263B." If you use
the normal arrow keys, the operation works as expected.

Hi Cearbhall

I forgot to mention that I am running Office 365, rather than 2016. I don’t think this will make a difference, but it would be interesting to hear from someone running 2016 to clarify if navigating by sentence is working for them using Alt + up or Down arrow.

Cheers

Ben

Ben,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

I have downloaded the add-on today called “SentenceNav” and another called “TextNav”. These do the job. So, in response to your suggestion, I restarted NVDA with add-ons disabled. This eliminated the functions provided by those two apps. I could now try out your suggestio. In Outlook, I found that you were right. When I switched to the active cursor with NVDA + space, the sentence commands did work. However, they failed to work in NS, Word. Any ideas?

I restarted the two add-ons and now I have the sentence reading controls in both Word and Outlook!

I would like to hear from the developers why this strange behaviour is happening.

All the best,

Cearbhall

Hi Cearbhall

The next and previous sentence commands should be working as normal in Word. However, note that they will not work if you are using Browse mode in a Word document to navigate by headings etc. Ensure you are in Focus mode by using the toggle command, NVDA + Space, and give them another try.

I hope this is helpful.

All the best.

Hi, all,

I am using Windows 10, NVDA 2020.3 and Word 2016.

When I try to read the next or previous sentence in a Word document, using alt + down-Arrow, or alt + up-arrow, I get no response. Indeed when I turn on keyboard help, these key combinations get no echo. It appears that this function has been removed from NVDA! I opened the NVDA User Guide and it still says that alt-Down-arrow is to be used to say next sentence and alt-up-arrow for previous sentence.

Can anyone explain what is happening? Is the user guide out of step?

All the best,

I just happen to have a word document open as I’m reading this, running office 2016 as well, and I get the same result. alt plus up or down arrow does not move by sentence.

Tony,

I’m so grateful for your two add-ons! They solve the problem to which there seems to be no answer.

I am now happily navigating by sentence as I wanted to. I’ll try the movement by paragraph later with the TextNav add-on.

Good work!

I am not sure why built-in navigation is not working for you, but I just wanted to point out that I have an add-on SentenceNav, that recently I made to work with MS Word. It uses the same keystrokes Alt+UP/Down to navigate between sentences. You need to enable MS Word support in add-on settings.
