Selecting files
Janet Brandly
Hello all,
I understand the commands to use when selecting files, but I have not been able to figure out how to verify that the files I have chosen are in fact selected. Is there such a command in NVDA?
Thanks,

Re: Selecting Files vs. Selecting Directories
Christopher Gray
First, many thanks for this discussion. It has been helpful.
I did use “Selecting Files” in my original subject. But, I probably was of base in doing this. What I am actually trying to do is select groups of directories. I did not view this as any different than selecting a file but perhaps I am wrong in this. So, is selecting directories needing a different set of commands?
Thanks and sorry for not being clearer.

Hi Gene Well I’m using Windows 10 with NVDA 2020.3 and it clearly announces “not selected” after each file name as I use Control+Shift+DownArrow to move through the list of files immediately after opening File Explorer. Similarly, if I select the first file then use Control+Shift+DownArrow, subsequent files are selected.
Had Chris known how the command works, he could have achieved what he wanted to do, so to say it’s the “wrong command” is unreasonable, particularly as you should know by now that in Windows, there are many ways to achieve the same thing. I was giving added value to the subject of file selection as yourself and others have done, just think of it as another tool in the box.
Cheers Chris

Control shift down arrow is never used in moving through lists. it is the wrong command to use for the purpose originally asked about and it is never used in moving in a list in general. When I use it with NVDA, I can move down the list but the selected or not selected status of an item is not spoken and nothing is either selected or unselected.
Control down arrow will tell you the status of items as you move. If an item is selected, selected is not spoken. If an item isn't selected, unselected is spoken. At least that is the case with NVDA. These movement commands are Windows commands, not screen-reader commands. Windows has no purpose or function for control shift when moving through a list.

Hi
It’s not the wrong command, you just need to understand how it works. Control+shift+Down Arrow checks the selection status of the file in focus and applies the same selection status to files traversed by subsequent presses of the command. When you first enter File Explorer, focus is on the top file of the list but the file is not selected, so subsequent presses of Control+Shift+Down Arrow did not select any files. Had Control+Spacebar been pressed first to select the top file, subsequent files traversed would also have been selected. This functionality makes it a more ergonomic command to use than the Control+DownArrow and Control+Spacebar to select command combination in situations where you are mostly selecting non-contiguous blocks of files.

I don't mark messzages myself, I go through and unmark messages as spam, all I was saying is that some filters look for words which could be. Its hard to know what will trigger the filter and I have noticed its not going to do it constantly. I have had messages marked as spam then more from the same poster not marked but this hardly happens at least with gmail so the filters are getting better.

Shaun,
Please, for the love of heaven, pay attention to what I, and others, write. I anonymized the message, but it's almost certain that someone who is a member of this group used the mark as spam option of their webmail or email client. No one should, under any circumstances, for any message, ever do that for a message that they have received from a service they subscribed to. Unsubscribe, or mute the topic, but do NOT mark it spam. I suggest you read up on Email Feedback Loops and the havoc they can, and do, wreak. I would like to prevent that for our members, thanks very much. Your contention about marking something as spam often enough is just fine, if the thing is actually spam. But if it isn't, that's another story. No message from groups.io is spam because you asked for it, directly, by subscribing. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 The depths of denial one can be pushed to by outside forces of disapproval can make you not even recognize yourself to yourself. ~ Brian Vogel

On Intentionally Marking Any Groups.io Message as Spam - DON'T
#adminnotice
Hello All,
Before I begin, let me say clearly that I do understand that it is possible that an e-mail service provider may mark a Groups.io message as spam incorrectly, and when this happens, I implore you to contact your provider and tell them that they need to stop doing so. No Groups.io message can be spam, by definition, because you must subscribe to receive it. No subscription-only messages can be spam, because spam is unsolicited and unwanted email. So if that's happened, let them know that's not OK. Now, on to the central point, which is about a member of any Groups.io actually marking a message as spam/junk because they don't like the content, are bored with a long topic, or similar: DON'T DO IT. When you mark a message, any message, as spam, this is not just dumping it in to the spam folder in your e-mail client, but starts a feedback cascade where that information is shared with your e-mail service provider and where that message is added for possible inclusion for spam matching criteria, and these get shared among email services. If only a few people report a Groups.io message (or that from any other subscription service) as spam in rapid succession, it can end up in all messages from that service being blocked by multiple email providers. Groups.io gives you the ability to exquisitely control the messages you receive, and if you want to stop content for a single topic use the Mute this Topic option to do that. The above is triggered because I, as a member of group administration, received the following message from Groups.io: ---- Subscriber was removed for marking a message as spam This is to notify you that xxx@... has been unsubscribed from your group nvda@nvda.groups.io because message Re: Admin's Notes Re List Conduct, Please Read was marked as spam. Note that this may have been done by their email service provider, not by the individual member personally. They've been given a link that lets them quickly resubscribe, in case this was an error. If you have any questions, please visit our help center. ----You will often end up being unsubscribed from a group if you mark any message as spam, because anyone getting messages should know that the only way they should be getting them is because they chose to subscribe. So, please, do not ever intentionally mark a message from Groups.io or any subscription-only email service as spam, and if your email service does this automatically, please contact their support and tell them to remove Groups.io from their spam blacklist, since anyone must subscribe to get any Groups.io message. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 The depths of denial one can be pushed to by outside forces of disapproval can make you not even recognize yourself to yourself. ~ Brian Vogel

Re: Selecting Files
Gene
Not control key home. If you move in a folder using control, however you move, nothing is selected or unselected. I'm saying that if you are in a folder, move around in it using the arrow keys, home or end, the file you move to will be selected. If you just open a folder, nothing is selected. You opened a folder, pressed control and moved. Nothing was selected and nothing became selected.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
My point is that people need to know that if they have moved in a folder something will be selected and it may not be one of the things they want selected. To make this simple, if you are in a folder that you have moved around in and you want to make sure nothing is selected, press home, then hold control and press the space bar. Now, nothing is selected. Gene

It is for windows explorer. Selecting and unselecting files in File Explorer When you go into a folder in file explorer you might only want to copy certain files out of that folder. They might not be together or in a group. To copy only certain files out of the folder if there are heaps of them you will need to do the following. It would be easier to go to the top of the folder so you can see all the files below. Now, hold down the Ctrl key, then use the Spacebar to select or unselect hightlighted files. Each time you press the Spacebar on an unselected file it will then become selected. Work your way down the files you want and select them with the Spacebar while still holding the Ctrl key. You should hear whether it is selected or unselected. As you arrow down the list of files, to confirm which ones you selected while still holding down the Ctrl key, go to the top of the folder then arrow down the list. If it only says the name of the song it is selected but if it says the name of the song and unselected then you know it is not. Usually the status bar can be read with the NVDA key + End key but not at present. You can grab an NVDA add-on to tell you how many files have been selected until Windows fixes this problem. You will need to use the NVDA key and the End key to see how many file were selected. Re: Selecting Files

To select contiguous items, just use shift. To select items that are not contiguous, hold control and down arrow until you get to something you want to select, and press space while still holding shift. Continuing to hold control, down arrow and when you find another file you want to select, press space again. That is how list views work in general. If you are in a list and you have moved so something is already selected and you want to start at the top with nothing selected, move to the top of the list with the up arrow or home. You have moved to the first item in the list. It is now selected. Unselect it with control space. Then, I am assuming you don't want it selected, press control and start down arrowing as I described. If you move to the top of a list and want the first item selected, it already is. If you hold control and down arrow, it will remain selected. it will remain selected if you use shift down arrow as well.
