Re: NVDA OCR

Luke Robinett <blindgroupsluke@...>

Hi there,

OCR will attempt to recognize whatever has NVDA focus. So to work with one of your image files, first open the file and then activate OCR to attempt to get the text from it. Once OCR finishes you will automatically be in the text viewer where you can use the arrow keys and other standard keys to review the text, just like in notepad or any other text area.
You can hold down shift while using the cursor keys to select text, just like in a text editor, and you can copy this to the clipboard so you can paste it elsewhere.
You can also hit the enter key on any word in the recognized text and this will simulate a mouse click on the underlying image. This is very useful for applications that are not otherwise accessible to screen readers.

Hope this helps get you started,
Luke

Re: how to solve captcha problems?

Hi there,
Most of the time there should be a “get audio challenge” link where you can listen to the challenge and type it into the box below. Some of them even detect screen readers now so all you have to do is activate the checkbox that says you are not a robot. Hope that helps.

I have mostly used treeview, but the behavior does not change in listview.

On my PC running Windows 10, Select just doesn't work. Only in listview can I select files. I cannot select folders anywhere.

I never use the treeview, which are you using? I'm discussing a list view.
A list is a list, whether the list consists of folders, which you are calling directories, files, or both in the same list. These are standard list commands and they will work the same, regardless of whether the list consists of files, folders, or both. I'll let others who work with treeviews in this way discuss them.

First, many thanks for this discussion. It has been helpful.

I did use “Selecting Files” in my original subject. But, I probably was of
base in doing this. What I am actually trying to do is select groups of
directories. I did not view this as any different than selecting a file but
perhaps I am wrong in this. So, is selecting directories needing a
different set of commands?

Thanks and sorry for not being clearer.

Hi Gene

Well I’m using Windows 10 with NVDA 2020.3 and it clearly announces “not
selected” after each file name as I use Control+Shift+DownArrow to move
through the list of files immediately after opening File Explorer.
Similarly, if I select the first file then use Control+Shift+DownArrow,
subsequent files are selected.

Had Chris known how the command works, he could have achieved what he wanted
to do, so to say it’s the “wrong command” is unreasonable, particularly as
you should know by now that in Windows, there are many ways to achieve the
same thing. I was giving added value to the subject of file selection as
yourself and others have done, just think of it as another tool in the box.

Cheers

Control shift down arrow is never used in moving through lists. it is the

wrong command to use for the purpose originally asked about and it is never

used in moving in a list in general.

When I use it with NVDA, I can move down the list but the selected or not

selected status of an item is not spoken and nothing is either selected or

unselected.

Control down arrow will tell you the status of items as you move. If an

item is selected, selected is not spoken. If an item isn't selected,

unselected is spoken. At least that is the case with NVDA. These movement

commands are Windows commands, not screen-reader commands. Windows has no

purpose or function for control shift when moving through a list.

Hi

It’s not the wrong command, you just need to understand how it works.

Control+shift+Down Arrow checks the selection status of the file in focus

and applies the same selection status to files traversed by subsequent

presses of the command. When you first enter File Explorer, focus is on the

top file of the list but the file is not selected, so subsequent presses of

Control+Shift+Down Arrow did not select any files. Had Control+Spacebar

been pressed first to select the top file, subsequent files traversed would

also have been selected. This functionality makes it a more ergonomic

command to use than the Control+DownArrow and Control+Spacebar to select

command combination in situations where you are mostly selecting

non-contiguous blocks of files.

Cheers

I've found that when those descending tones are missing when I shut
down or restart NVDA it's time to press the Windows plus b key
combination and press enter on any extraneous NVDA listings.
Apparently something stops NVDA from closing properly and it remains
semicomatose. I've had as many as six in there after restarting NVDA
several times with one of them being the workingh one; all the others
go away after pressing enter on them.

NVDA 2020 beta 3

Running the latest beta of NVDA on a Win 10 20h2 system and using Word 2016.
If you select something on a web page and copy it to the clipboard NVDA says copied to clip board and repeats what has been written to the clipboard. If you open a document in Word 2016 and select something in the document and copy it to the clipboard NVDA only says copied and does not repeat what has been copied. Is this the way this is supposed to work?

Re: how to solve captcha problems?

Well having a small site I did admins on, captchas are not really that good.

V3 needs a lot of work and v2 and well thats allready hacked.

Finally I solved spam with an email registration plugin so you verified via email.

That prevented spam accounts from registration but stilled unconfirmed spam accounts to the database.

I then added something else which will delete every user and post and completely destroy the entire website and its databases unless you are in the whitelist.

There are 4 users that need to be there, and so there is no issue.

I also had a spam reg stopper which I configured and a few other things.

Thats not going to work with a website with a million admins or authors unless you manually put them in which I guess you could do.

There is no captcha, or anything its just hard wired to destroy anything that doesn't look ok or doesn't post for a week.

Its quick and clean, of course if the whitelist ever got destroyed then you would have to start from a clean install, but you would have to get every backup destroyed to so the world would have to end pritty much first before that happened.

It works for a small blog but its probably a bit clunky for anything over that.

Re: Questions regarding SwitchSynth

Tyler Spivey

The appeal is that any accidental changes to speech rate, keyboard echo, or any other NVDA setting will not become permanently locked into that profile.
Imagine this: you create a config profile for another language. now you switch to it, and want to turn character echo on to, say, type a series of numbers that need to be accurate.
As soon as you do that, character echo's state is permanent in that profile. It can never be synchronized with the default value, and you'll always have to adjust it.

I don't really see the appeal of this add-on anymore, seeing that you can assign keyboard shortcuts to configuration profiles, which can include changes to synthesizers and voice settings natively. However, it was a good add-on while it was not possible.

Are you saying you can see the text when you down arrow but no headings? In such a case, don't dismiss the possibility that the message itself may be defective. People at times assume the problem is there's when it may not be such as when a web site is down. If all other mail reads correctly, the problemmay be with the message. If you want to check, if you forward the message to someone off list, the person can see if it reads properly.

I don't know what is causing the rest of your problems. I hope you have everything backed up in case some sort of computer failure is iminent.

Hi NVDA list strange event. I flipped through my email today as always and for some weird reason, the TV listtings message I get from NFB newsline which is well made and can be read with no problem can’t be seen by either NVDA or narrator. I can see the heaers and the download message as picture and open message in a new window but for some weird reason no headings links or anything. It’s as if the message is blank a whole day’s worth of TV listings based on the channels I set as favorites is invisible. I shutdown and restarted both NVDA and the computer altogether and it’s like it’s never read the thing before. Similar to that when the computer first starts it’s like a tv set warming up like in the old days NVDA can’t seem to tab forward or back it’s slow to respond to commands and slow loading pages. Any idea why the computer can’t recognize a message it has seen maybe a couple hundred times now?
