Re: muting

Quentin Christensen

Fn is a key found on most laptops and some desktop keyboards - it's basically a modifier key you hold down and press another key to perform an action (which a full size desktop computer probably has either a key or a button for).  The most common is the F1 - F12 function keys often perform other duties such as adjusting brightness, volume or disabling a trackpad mouse on a laptop.  On some keyboards you actually have to press Fn+function key to perform the regular function, which is frustrating - you can normally toggle that, but exactly how varies from keyboard to keyboard.

In terms of figuring out what keys do, if you press NVDA+1 (the 1 on the number row, above q) it puts NVDA in Input Help mode.  Any key you press while in this mode won't do anything, but NVDA will tell you what it is, so it can be a way to find your way around a new keyboard without sighted help.

If you normally use F7 to mute NVDA, that's not an NVDA keystroke, but it's likely that is the key to mute your computer's sound.  The keystroke to mute NVDA is NVDA+s, but if F7 works, that's achieves what you need.  If it's not working right now, it might be that you've accidentally toggled your function key Fn lock.

Neil,

Mute is typically done through a dedicated key on some media keyboards, or through F6 or F7 (when used as media keys) on many laptops and some desktop keyboards.  All it takes to trigger a mute by accident is Fn+F6 (or F7) and often Fn+F6 (or F7) will toggle it back off.

This is another of those instances where make and model information as well as whether any media keys function is enabled (and for a screen reader user I'd very, very strongly suspect it's not unless the machine is brand new and untweaked yet).  Some makers do highly unconventional things as far as what function keys correspond to what media functions.

Gene's advice about using sndvol and getting a cheap external USB soundcard are both things to try and do.

Reading chats in MS Teams

Vaibhav Saraf

Hi Community,

When on MS Teams I used to toggle to browse mode and read all the chats using Shift + 4 or just 4 as all the chats used to be heading level 4. In an update done around last week, MS Teams no longer marks chats as H4. I need to arrow up/down to read the chats which is a very inconvenient and slow method to do. The focus mode did not work really well for me as there I do not have the capability to read the chat word by word or letter by letter if I want to.

Is there a better way to read the chats now?

Thanks,
Vaibhav

Hi all,
Okay, this is probably one of the strangest problems I've seen.
Sometimes, NVDA will skip around websites that have lots of add
content, but not always, though I can't seem to make it work reliably.
Here's what happens:
1. I open several websites in Firefox, one in each window.
2. I try to read one of them using NVDA+Down Arrow.
3. As I'm reading them, NVDA either skips words or rereads words. I'd
post a link to where this is likely to happen, but I can't seem to
reproduce it reliably myself. Today I revisited the site I was having
this problem with yesterday, but it didn't do it there. It did,
however, do it on the site I first discovered it on a couple weeks ago
today.

I used it at one point, and it worked as expected. I've forgotten the syntax, so you would need to look that up.

Myself, I would be in a WSL2 terminal and using rsync most likely since I know the tool very well and it generally resumes beautifully when things go wrong as seems inevitable for large copies.
I agree. I'm much more comfortable with the BASH shell than with Windows PowerShell. You would need to check the rsync command line options to make sure you copied the NTFS metadata correctly.

If you really do need a copy of an entire drive, then booting to a Linux distribution such as GRML and running Clonezilla would be accessible and definitely works - I've done that in the past.

Do you recall how to turn on the speech for GRML? The distro is fresh but the wiki is serious old and thus I don't quite trust it is correct since the command used seems wrong.

Using N V D A with Station Play List Studio!

Thomas E Williamson, Senior

Hello,

How can I find the instructions for assigning the keys for n v d a to work with station playlist.

Please note: I have the ad-on for spl as well.

For example, in jaws, if I press the letter m, this will allow me the chance to talk on air, while my music is playing softly in the background.

It appears in N v d a, that this does not work, for some reason.

Hope that this makes since.

I appreciate any help.

I am new to using n v d a with spl.

Thanks!

To prevent that happening, press ALT+f to open the file menu, press the down arrow key three times to get to the Info menu, press Tab to enter that menu and then press the down arrow to get to the Protected View menu. Press Tab again and you'll be on the Enable Editing option and, if you press enter, that document will become unprotected and the NVDA user should no longer hear the warning that the document is protected and can't be edited. It will remain unprotected even after you close the document or shut down the computer. The same works with Excel files :)

Subject: [nvda] am having problems typing while in an edit box when searching amazon

Hello to all. I have the latest version of NVDA, 20.3, and am using a
windows7 64 bit machine. This problem just started this morning.
When I go to amazon and hit the letter e for an edit box to begin
typing in a search. I can type in the edit box, but when I try to use
any of the arrow keys to check what I typed is correct, I just hear
the word blank. I have restarted NVDA with no luck. I have restarted
my computer and no change. I tried typing in MS-WORD and I have no
issues typing in word. What should I do. I also tried clearing my
internet history by using c-cleaner and that didn't help at all.
Thanks for any tips.
