Re: Strategies for navigating YouTube comments using NVDA?

Luke Robinett <blindgroupsluke@...>

Hi folks,
Just thought I would drop a quick update because I just heard back from the Google accessibility team about this. Sounds like they are going to take the feedback to heart to add dedicated shortcut keys to traverse the comment section, but they reminded me of a useful technique that may or may not have gotten mentioned in this thread. I always forget about the N key when in browse mode, which skips over links and takes you to the next ordinary text. This actually works really well for getting to the comments themselves and bypassing all the sender/timestamp info.

On Jan 6, 2021, at 3:04 PM, Luke Robinett via groups.io <blindgroupsluke@...> wrote:

Thanks for all the great ideas, folks. Turns out I’m already doing a combination of most of these things but did pick up a few tips and tricks. Tony, that plug-in sounds awesome! I will definitely grab that and see if it helps. I found that if I press control end to go to the very bottom of the page and then press shift 2 a couple of times I will find the comments section pretty consistently since it is under a level two heading. Of the two issues I originally brought up, I’d say traversing between the comments is the most annoying. Even if you press G to go to the profile image of each user, there are still numerous elements you have to move pass to get to the actual text of the comment. Thanks again and keep the ideas coming. I’ve already submitted The feedback to Google as I mentioned so hopefully that will help. In the scheme of things I know this isn’t like a critical issue or anything, but I am a big fan of reading and interacting with comments on topics that interest me so it would be nice if that could be made a little easier. :)

Comments are only loaded when you scroll down the page past the video description. Usually, I just rapidly scroll down the page, wait a couple of seconds, then the comments section will be there.
As for navigating comments, I typically use [e] to navigate to the edit field to add your own comment, then use [g] to navigate to each comment, as each begins with a profile picture.

Re: edge and gmail

I agree, its easily fixed when it happens its just slightly annoying but its not that big of a deal.

Could be interaction or driver or something, something aint clicking when some scripts load is my suspician, at any rate, its not like I need it for everything and only 1 address and a couple other things.

Its just a querk, could be my cpu, who knows.

Hmph, well its only happening with edge.

As for a full repair, no, for various reasons, firstly I did that on a
system running latest update and had to revert because it screwed things
so badly it was revert or reformat and I didn't have time.

The other thing, chkdsk, microsoft says its fixed, but it screws up ntfs
partitions, this means another reformat, so no on both accounts.

To be honest, I may try to turn off uia in edge and run with it like that.

No idea why edge interacts like that, but its not edge itself it seems
to be nvda if push comes to shove I may just install chrome, there is
nothing wrong with my system its just edge interacting weirdly with
google for some reason.

Yes, truth is after I restart nvda I can login just fine, something seems to trip up speech causing nvda to freeze at least 3 stacks, but edge itself is not crashed just nvda.

A restart of nvda will have me able to continue to login my session though so its not a big issue.

Sadly, microsoft sites I used to use have completely gone away from explorer including weather as of this week and my version of firefox will not run them so I am stuck to using either chrome or edge and microsoft keeps wanting me to use edge no matter what I use so edge is what I use for microsoft things right now.

Its fine if I don't login but still.

Yep, you are so far the only one reporting this, so I would suggest doing a repair or reinstall of windows. CHKDSK and dism works fine on windows using ntfs volumes. I just did this a week ago as I had some issues. Also did you run the com fixing tool NVDA has? Maybe something broke there as well.

Sorry we cannot be of any help, looks like you are very much on your own from here on out.

Re: Problems with NVDA and Formulars in MS word

I have not changed anything. I don't even know how to read anything other than English. But her messages come through in French or something like that.

Here is the odd thing. If I select, I can read the message but if I just listen, at least with my speech synth it comes out in some odd language.  I even tried with espeak. Here is a very short file of what I mean. I dun no even how I should submit this to GitHub as this might be a picnic error, at least for the 2 of us who hear it.

Link to db file is here.

That is indeed odd, as all your messages come in in English for me.

Christina's messages however read in another language using Gmail's web interface. When Brian quotes them, they come through in English.

This has happened occasionally on this list, and only this list.

I thought we had an issue for this, but I can't find it just now. These
content controls on the developer ribbon have always been problematic in
one way or another (and if not in entering them, then in filling in the
forms they create).

So the other part of this is - what are you trying to make? Word is
likely not the best solution for creating something like a form you want
people to fill in like this. Something like Google forms are popular for
online survey type forms. For something you want people to be able to
either fill out on the PC, or print out, use a regular, ordinary table:

- Have two columns where the cell in the left column is the label
("name",
"address", etc), and the right column is where you type your response

- For longer responses, have a full table-width cell with the label
("Please explain why you want to go to Mars?") and a full table-width
cell
below that to enter the response.

A table like this can be printed and filled in by pen, or you can tab
through the table and fill in details as appropriate, and it will work
for
just about everyone.

No, second or third, I do have the latest update of edge though.

If I restart nvda it will work, and edge itself hasn't crashed but I
do need to restart nvda then edge will work as normal.

Hi.  When I opened the user guide from the NVDA website, it opened in Edge.  It seems to be the shortcuts to the user guide in the NVDA menus that open in another browser.

Thanks,

If this is something you can reliably reproduce, then you can and should try the instructions for:  Creating an Issue in GitHub for NVDA

Those include the pre-problem-creation steps you need to do to try to figure out whether you even need to create an issue, which involves trying to determine where the problem lies.

That depends on what you mean.  Word can definitely read in PDF files and
convert them for editing, but there are occasions where something may change
in the formatting based upon how they were created.

In your case, if this is for what you say it is, you'd just create and edit
everything as Word, and save your main source material in MS-Word format.
You'd just need to do a Save As with the latest versions when you want PDF
versions of same.  I personally don't like Microsoft's PDF conversions due
to size - they tend to turn out much larger than other methods.  I use
PDFConverter, which like a great many PDF converters functions as a virtual
printer.  You can send any file type to it and it will spit out the PDF
equivalent of same.  The resulting PDF file is generally much smaller, too.
