Hi.

This is not a Thunderbird issue. In NVDA 2020.4, the CLDR emoji annotation was updated to version 38, which may have resulted in this symbol being recognised and spoken as an emoji, whereas it was probably ignored before. As discussed, the best fix is to just increase the symbol level of the emoji above what you have it set to (for example, to Most if you have it set on the default which is Some).

For the record, nor do I at this point.  The inconsistent behavior with what NVDA is announcing when Thunderbird is not even involved is enough for me to say that this is most likely to be an NVDA problem.

I hope that some of our regulars who are intimately tied to NVAccess have been reading this topic (and I'll have to rattle cages, too).  This is a case where I could no sooner come up with a coherent, short, problem description and set of replication steps than fly to the moon under the power of my arms.  There's a consistent issue, but an inconsistent output from NVDA, which makes it particularly odd.

Hi,


the easiest solution to this oddity, that was suggested by our friend DJ Raf in the italian list, is the following:


1 press NVDA+n;

2 choose Preferences, then Punctuation and symbols;

3 press shift+tab to go to the search box and type filled down;

4 press tab, and you should be on the symbol that you are looking for. If you are not on the right position, press up/down arrow to locate it. You can also search for the word filled only, but you'll have to press down arrow about 12 times;

5 press tab twice and select "most" or "all" with up/down arrows. I think that this depends on your current punctuation verbosity. If it is set to "some", the option "most" should be O.K.;

6 press tab to the O.K. button and press enter.


I hope that it'll work for you as it worked for me.

Hi Quentin,

 

According to the NVDA user guide section 15.11 We need to download the drivers from:

https://en.seika-braille.com/down/index.html

 

When accessing that site and clicking on the Seika-Braille Display Driver for NVDA, Seika Version 3, 4, 5 and Seika80 (BrailleDisplayDrivers) you are asked for a user name and password.  Unfortunately, we cannot download the drivers to get this braille display to work.

 

 

Can you please look in to it?

As Brian includes as the first step in his troubleshooting guide, have you restarted the PC?  This is particularly important if you have recently updated either NVDA or Office.

Also which exact version of NVDA and which exact build of Office are you using?  For me, running NVDA 2020.4 on Windows 10 (64-bit) Version: 2009, Build: 19042 and using Office 365 (64-bit) Version: 16.0.13628.20346, I can add headings and change font style in Word and it works fine for me.  (which is not to say there may not be an error, just, if there is, it must not be happening for everyone in every situation).

A couple of other things to note:
- The shortcut for setting heading level 1 in Word is control+alt+1.  Alt+1 runs the first item on the Quick Access Toolbar (which I believe is toggling autosave on and off).

- NVDA does not report style changes by default.  Press NVDA+control+d to open NVDA's document formatting settings, tab to "Style" and press spacebar to check this checkbox.  Press ENTER to close the settings, and NVDA+control+c to save the settings.

Also, if you have been modifying the settings, have you set NVDA to use UI Automation in Microsoft Word controls?  it's an advanced setting, but if you have, that may make a difference (even if you have, it shouldn't crash NVDA).

Hi Brian and Group,

Well I was not able to find the single character anywhere by myself. Brian somehow found it somewhere.  In his last message, I copied it and used the speech dictionary to add it and redefine it under the single character setting as unread.  After all this speculation, that seems to have worked.

This issue started with the same Thunderbird that I was using prior to the upgrade to NVDA 2020.4.  So I wouldn't think it was a Thunderbird issue solely.

I found a correct link by a Google search.  I tested it before I sent it.  It may be that I didn't copy the correct link or that for some reason, the link was the incorrect one because the new link wasn't copied when I issued the command.

Don't worry about the compatibility statements unless they are very old, like NVDA 18 or somewhere around there and no later.  Somewhere around NVDA 18 or 19, many add-ons had to be redesigned because the version of Python, (spelling) changed that NVDA uses and is programmed in.  Even if you install an incompatible version, I believe you will be told that it is incompatible.  It won't hurt anything, I'm not sure if it will even install.

Hi all, I currently use jaws 18, and think it’s about time I learn how to
use NVDA.

It looks hard to use, but hope it isn’t. so any ideas you can pass along

Hi.

Just as I thought this wasn't possible, because it never used to be, I tried it and it can definitely happen. So, your best bet is to press Windows+B, search for the NVDA icon and click it (Applications or Enter worked on my end, then go to the settings and set up your NVDA modifier key.
