No, you’re right – and so long as there’s still an installable desktop version, I’m willing to bet it’ll always be better than the “modern universal app” or whatever they’re called.

Janet,

Even my question itself may be outdated, but are you using the Skype App (as in the modern Win10 Skype) or the installed Skype for Desktop variety (see:

Download Skype for Desktop | Available for Windows, Mac ...)?

That will make a difference in advice, and if memory serves the Skype Desktop version is more accessible than the modern app, but I could easily have that flip-flopped.

if you use skype for desktop and you move to another application and
return to skype again and it does not work, just press alt to open
menu bars then press scape to close it and yuse brows mode in desktop
skype.

Abdelrahman,

Given that you've tacked your message on to an existing, and lengthy, topic from last fall I am presuming you probably have already read through it before doing so.  But since there are other GitHub issues mentioned related to this, and you've mentioned one, I thought I'd give the direct link to this topic in the archive in case you hadn't already plowed through it to see if something of use is already there:  https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/topic/76317611

Abdelrahman Osman

Hello everyone,

I had this issue for a while now and it just became annoying! The difference is that NVDA was crashing multiple times then I detected these system tray icons; my problem is regular crashing not the icons.

I found similar issue brought up in this GitHub post: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/4969  but it closed without a direct solution. I do not install the synthesizer mentioned in this post yet the NVDA crashes. I cannot think of any pattern or potential causes for this issue.

Any suggestions or way to deal with this problem? I am using NVDA 2020.4 without any addons and Windows 10 Home v20H2 OS Build 19042.867.

Not without the exact model number.  I just looked at the Acer page for the entire Aspire 3 model line and every photo shows a laptop with a full sized keyboard, including number pad.  And they make a lot of different models under this line, far more than I'm accustomed to seeing.

Hi all, I have an acer inspire 3 laptop which has a compact numpad. It doesn’t have dedicated home/end/page up/down keys. In document and emails to get to the top of the page I press control plus numpad7,and to the end control plus numpad1. This doesn’t work on webpages using Firefox or Microsoft edge. Is there another keystroke I should be using?

Using the function key as on my previous laptops doesn’t seem to make a difference either.

Re: virtual desktops in windows 10

Hi,

Yes, the long-term goal is for important portions of the add-on code to be included in NVDA. Announcing virtual desktops is one of these, and there was an effort to do this for some time. Virtual desktops will become important in the future as evidenced by changes being tested by Windows Insiders.

Cheers,

Joseph

Joseph,

That is critically important, and I'm starting to believe that in addition to Windows 10 Version and Build, NVDA version, and software being used version (when applicable), that a list of NVDA Add-Ons active is something that's needed generally for a number of more in-depth questions.

I cannot recall, but is what is now Windows 10 App Essentials slated to be subsumed into the NVDA core code at any point in the foreseeable future?

Re: virtual desktops in windows 10

Hi,
Can you verify that Windows 10 App Essentials is enabled? You can do it in
two ways:
1. Open Add-ons Manager and see if Windows 10 App Essentials is shown as
"enabled".
2. Open Settings (Windows+I), then search for things. If the add-on is
working, NVDA will announce "N suggestions".

Cheers,
Joseph

Re: problems to login in aws's console

By the way, I just went to the Disability Support Page and submitted the following via their email mechanism:

Hello,

I work with many individuals who are blind some of whom also use AWS.  I also have an AWS account.  Suddenly, when trying to log in to AWS, on the screen that says, "Security Check" where you're attempting to prove the login is from a real person, there is now a Captcha used that is completely inaccessible.  It is one of the text based, "Enter the characters shown," captchas with no option to change to an audio challenge.  The only option available is to present another set of characters as the image for entry, which does nothing as far as allowing a screen reader user to complete sign-in.

Re: problems to login in aws's console

Am I safe in presuming you're starting at this page:  https://console.aws.amazon.com/  ?

I just tried logging in to my account, and to my shock (given this is Amazon) it does appear that they are using a version of Captcha that is of the "enter a string of characters shown" variety where the only other control is one to show a different set of characters.  There is nothing for an audio challenge, etc.

I would be contacting Amazon Disability Support and screaming bloody murder!

Re: virtual desktops in windows 10

This really could be either NVDA or something having gone slightly "off" with the Windows Update.

As far as NVDA:  The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues

As far as Windows 10:
1. Using SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) to Repair Windows 8 & 10
and then, if that doesn't solve it:
2. Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file

For myself, I'd do the SFC/DISM first, the NVDA troubleshooting steps next, and the repair install last.

Hello friends!

While trying to login in my developer's account in aws, the page shows an image capcha and I couldn't find option to change it to an audio chalenge or something like that.

Any hint would be appreciated.
