Re: Reading JSTOR articles with NVDA

Well I didn't expect that! A reply from JSTOR arrived in the time that I was typing my message on this list! Although the solution is a tiny bit fiddly, the result is very acceptible.

This is what they told me:
Dear Giles,

Thank you very much for your message. We are always happy to provide you with screenreader-compatible copies of articles upon request and free of charge. You can email us at support@... or use the prompt that you hear on the article page to send us an automated request.

Alternately if you run out of JPASS downloads quickly as you download articles that do not feel relevant, we will replenish your downloads at no additional cost to you.

The article you requested today is attached to this message as a high-quality PDF. It is saved as the following file: 26779641.pdf

If you have any further questions, please feel free to get back in touch!

Kind regards,
EJ

* And I have downloaded the PDF file they attached and it is ordinary text, not a scan that needs running through OCR.

Reading JSTOR articles with NVDA

Giles Turnbull

Hi all,

as an author, I often need to research things for what I'm writing. In my sighted days I found JSTOR very useful and I'd like to use it again now. With a free personal account, it is possible to read up to 10 articles per month (100 at the moment thanks to an increased amount due to coronavirus).

The website is generally very accessible (there are a couple of "button" buttons, but that's the worst I've noticed).

I used advanced Search to find articles relating to the Irish town of Lisdoonvarna, which appears in what I'm writing at the moment. In the results was an article from the September 2016 issue of The Poetry Ireland Review. On that article's page I can find the text viewer frame, but the text appearing in that frame does not appear to be accessible with NVDA. I don't know whether you'll be able to find anything on this page unless you have a JSTOR account (free or institutional) but this is the link: https://www.jstor.org/stable/26779641

I have actually just purchased an annual subscription to the JPASS, which lets me download 120 PDF versions of articles per year, because I know I'll use that and I know I'll be able to read the text whether it's accessible text or in need of running through OCR. I just wondered whether anybody else has used JSTOR and found a way to read the text without needing to download the PDFs ... I don't want to download a PDF in order to find out whether there is anything in the PDF that is relevant to what I'm interested in!

The JSTOR Accessibility Policy page, https://about.jstor.org/accessibility/ says that their website is accessible to screen readers like NVDA and JAWS, but it doesn't say anything about the text viewer application. I have just emailed their support services for advice, but thought I'd ask here as well :)

Thank you,

Giles

Hi Steve,

If you go to https://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ you’ll find books covering how to use NVDA, and using it with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Hope this helps.

Hi, as you are talking about Spreadsheets, can you give me a brief description on how to creat them and use other features, or failing that do you know of a spreadsheet or Excel Tutorial please? Do you use Access and if so can you shed any light on using databases, etc. I am totally blind, use digital hearing aids in both ears and am a wheelchair user and live on my own although I do have two carers and others who voluntarily help me but none of them use the programmes I relate to, so hoping you or someone else on this list may be able to help or know of someone who can.

hi Sarah

I stopped it saying "Formula Bar" by checking "Edit Directly in Cells".

Apologies if I confused anyone.

Yeah I just created the spreadsheet by hand. It was easy enough to do, then connected the list. I didn't send the messages, but let me let you know, they will be in your outbox and they will send. One day maybe those fields will read, it's too bad they will not.

Blessings.

Are there any extensions for LibreOffice?

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I am using Windows 10, NVDA 2020.4 and LibreOffice 7.2.  Are there any extensions for NVDA that improve its accessibility with LibreOffice?  In particular, LibreOffice has a spreadsheet application, Calc, that has some material accessibility issues.

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Excel: Stop Saying "Formula Bar"

Well, Here's the odd thing. I have the "edit directly in sells" unchecked and mine still says the "formula bar" prompt. I’m not in a formula bar. I'm entering in emails in this case. Is there anything else I can check to see in my case what is going on and when the edit direct in cells check box is not checked? It still happens with all add ons disabled and when I run the com reg tool.

I'll google on how to do this. I read an article on Microsoft's help page but I was even more confused. It's a shame those fields will never be able to read. And when I try and use outlook I get "no tables found" even though I have over 900 contacts in there. Oh well. I'll investigate this further.

Important notices on upcoming add-on releases from Joseph Lee: NVDA 2020.4 requirement and other announcements

Hi all,

After receiving comments on Add-on Updater 21.03 release, I figured it would be best to make some announcements about upcoming add-on releases:

  • Future add-ons will require NVDA 2020.4 or later: Add-on Updater 21.03 is the first add-on to require NVDA 2020.4. This requirement will be in effect for the next release of Resource Monitor and StationPlaylist (scheduled for next week at the earliest) due to changes introduced in this NVDA release that add-ons will take advantage of (clipboard announcement in Resource Monitor, fixes required to support track column announcements in StationPlaylist).
  • Add-on Updater offers older releases of some add-ons: don’t worry about this, as it is not the fault of Add-on Updater. I expect this issue will be resolved once updates to affected add-ons are released.
  • No May 2021 release for Windows 10 App Essentials: usually I release updates to this add-on on a monthly basis. But I’m skipping May release (21.05) in order to assist with NVDA 2021.1 testing.
  • StationPlaylist add-on maintenance is slowly coming to a close: version 21.04 of this add-on (coming as early as next week) will be one of the last releases of SPL add-on from me. After this release, only localization and critical bug fixes will be released until early fall. I will maintain SPL add-on until December 31, 2021, and I hope the community can maintain it after that point.
  • ObjPad 21.04 emergency update: although I stopped maintaining this add-on for a while, upon request from community members, I’ll release an emergency version of ObjPad add-on to make it compatible with upcoming NVDA 2021.1.
  • NVDA 2021.1 will be required at least 60 days after its release: due to massive changes introduced in upcoming NVDA 2021.1, most of my add-ons will require this NVDA release. This won’t take effect until at least 60 days after NVDA 2021.1 is released in order to give you time to check other add-ons and upgrade to NVDA 2021.1.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

This has been fixed in the alpha release following the one mentioned below.

Hello all,

With the latest next release of NVDA, when using firefox with multiple

In other words, I have two profiles (p1 and p2), I first start p1 then
start p2, NVDA will still "read" the content of p1 even though I'm in p2.

This looks to be a regression from the previous next release.

fields don't read when creating a distribution list in winword

Sarah k Alawami

Steps:

  1. Launch NVDA.
  2. Launch winword
  3. Go to mailing, and  chose start merge, then choose meial
  4. Go back into mailings, and choose recipient list.
  5. Choose new list
  6. Try and read the field names. All you hear is “edit blank,” no labels for what this is.

I’m using nvda 2020.3 and Windows 10 20H2 (64-bit) build 19042.867. I tried object nav, screen review and clicking into the fields, but so far I can’t get these things to read when tabbing.

Thanks.

Did you try without add-ons and did that make a difference?

Could you get me a copy of your NVDA log to have a look at please, ideally at debug level?
Please send it attached to an email to info@....  Include a description of what you have done and what isn't working as it should (so I know what it's about in case I don't get to investigate today).

First of all, your NVDA key is either INSERT or CAPS LOCK, depending on how you have NVDA setup.  So, to set your log level:
1) Press NVDA+control+g to open the general settings
2) Press TAB until the focus is on 'Log level'
3) Press DOWN ARROW to get to 'Debug'
4) Press ENTER to close settings
5) Press NVDA+control+c to save settings.

To restart NVDA with add-ons disabled:
1) Press NVDA+Q
2) Down arrow to 'Restart with add-ons disabled'
3) Press ENTER

Next, recreate the issue - do whatever causes problems.

To get NVDA's log after that, there are several ways:

If NVDA is still running and usable:
1) Press NVDA+F1 to open the log viewer
2) Press CONTROL+A to select all.
3) Press CONTROL+C to copy.
4) Open your email and start a message to info@..., type a little about what you have done and what has happened in the body of the message, then leave a space and:
5) Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied log.

Instead of using the log viewer, or if NVDA has stopped and you needed to restart it or the computer:
1) Press WINDOWS+R to open Windows' Run dialog
2) Type %temp% and press ENTER (that's the percent sign, the letter t e m p and another percent sign).  Windows Explorer should open to the temporary folder.
3) Press TAB to move to the file list
4) Press N and move down to find up to three files:  nvda.log (the log file for the current or most recent NVDA session), nvda-old.log (the log from the previous session) and nvda-crash.dmp (a crash dump with more information created if NVDA itself crashes).
5) Depending on what email program you use, the steps will be different, but attach as many of those three files to an email to info@... as will be useful, and again in the body of the message describe a bit about what has happened.

Hi,
No for two reasons:
1. Windows 10 Mobile is no longer supported by Microsoft, and OEM's
discontinued phones running Windows 10 Mobile.
2. Windows 10 Mobile runs mostly on ARM processors, and NVDA is not really
designed for phones at this time.
