Can NVDA be used on a PC with two monitors?

Richard B. McDonald

Hi!

I will be using NVDA 2020.4 on a Windows 10 PC that has two monitors.  Can NVDA be used on this PC?  Is there somewhere I can read about using NVDA with two monitors?

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Brian!

I agree with you about the goodness of Windows Defender, and the not-so-great goodness of Sophos.  However, this is not a “choice” thing but rather a corporate requirement as regards HIPAA.

Thanks,

Richard

First, I am not questioning anyone's product choices.

That being said, what is it that you're trying to protect?  If it's just your PC, then I'd suggest you have a look at what the independent antivirus and security suite testing labs are saying about how products are performing.  Windows Defender, which comes with Windows 10, has consistently been in the top tier of products for years now, since it's major overhaul around the time Windows 8 came out.  And it's quite accessible.

Look at the most recent testing results from the following antivirus/security testing labs, along with the historical results from the past several years if you want to see how Windows Security/Defender has been performing.  Windows Security has been solidly in the top 10, often top 5, and frequently beats out several well-known competitors that one must pay for.

AV Test

AV Comparatives

SE Labs  (Reports Page)

MRG Effitas  (360 Protection Testing Category)

Looking at these reports will also give you an idea of how the other products are performing, and if you look at several reporting cycles, you'll also see that "being number one" really doesn't matter because the top products constantly change ranking depending on the samples used for testing in any given cycle.  The differences in real-world protection between number one and number ten on most of these rankings is insignificant to your average user, and what was number one in one cycle can fall to number six in the next, and vice versa.

I just got an Office update that fixed the problem of Narrator or NVDA not announcing the autocomplete or autofill choices.  It works well now.  Up down arrow keys move between choices.  Hit return to select the one you want and enter it in the TO: space.

This new version is 2104 build 13929.20386 .
To find version: FILE > Office Account   then see version at About Outlook in lower right.

While at Office Account click on Office Update > Update Options menu > click top item which is Update Now.  That is what I did just now.

Regarding issues that get solved, please do the following #adminnotice

Hello All,

I ask that those who are working on a given issue, in a given topic, who find a solution NOT create a separate topic with "[Solved]," or "[Fixed]," or similar stuck in front of the original topic.   Doing so splits the solution into a separate topic from the discussion about the very problem it solves, and very often that makes the question, "The solution to what?," come up, particularly when the solution makes no direct reference to the issue that was being discussed (and that has happened way more than once).

Please post your solution to the original topic.  For those who would like a "[Solved]" signifier, I would be very happy to put one in on the topic if you e-mail the owner address asking for one and identifying the topic where you've posted a solution.  That way the entire discussion of a given issue, and its solution, stay in one tidy topic rather than being split from each other.

             Thanks for your consideration.

Sophos is accessible from the web  interface, quite unuseable on the application itself. you can do full scan from the appliction itself.
but once you set it up on the web interface,  you basically can let it do its job.
you can set up schedule scan, tell it what to do if it detect a threat, and exclude files or folder.
it will email you if it detects things, fail to update, didn't meet policy and so on.
for the price you pay, you get more device protected.

the other one i recommend is call vipre advance security

How to use NVDA to navigate and use text boxes inserted in MS Word

Rowen Cary

Hello Everyone,

I want to know how NVDA should interact with the text box in Word. If you want to insert a text box, you can open the Word document and press Alt + N, X in turn.
Is there any information to indicate this?
Sorry, I can't access the text box well using UIA and non-UIA.
However, many resume templates use it, and we should be able to interact with it easily.

Thanks.

Actually, in some HP Streams (I do not say all, because I do not know) it can be very hard. And can require replacing, for example, the WIFI card with the drive (M2 II format), and then using a USB based WIFI adapter.

I speak from experience of trying to upgrade the SSD on a Stream.

So if you are thinking of upgrading one, google for the experience others have had doing the same upgrade to that exact model number.

Now, I will confess, that this was a Stream X360, so it was starting out behind the curve to begin with, and I probably shouldn't blame the whole line. However, HP never should have sold some of those early streams; and that made me doubt the integrity of the line as a whole.
My experience with Streams was enough to say never again, even if later models improve.
There are too many better options.

All that said, the last time I worked on it, it ran NVDA with eSpeak just fine along with OpenOffice, real office, etc.

Desktop Outlook 2019 New Email: NVDA does not announce selections in autofill window. Strange mouse behaviour in autofill window.

I posted the same problem on  May 13  #83951

With NVDA Off: After typing part of the name of the addressee, I can pick an email address from the autofill suggestions list by using up/down arrow keys or mouse cursor.  Click with mouse on the selection or hit Enter to enter the selection to the TO: space.

With NVDA on: NVDA announces “Form Regions” when mouse cursor is placed in the TO: space. After typing part of the name of the addressee one can pick an email address from the autofill suggestion list by using the Up/Down arrow keys and can hit Enter to enter the selection into the TO: space.

PROBLEM #1: NVDA does not speak out the email addresses in the autofill list when they are selected by the Up/Down arrow keys.

PROBLEM #2: If the mouse cursor is moved to the autofill list, one of the email addresses gets entered in the TO: space without clicking on it or hitting Enter.  If the list was long and contained addresses from several people, email could be sent to the wrong person.  This does not happen with NVDA off.  The same thing happens in Narrator.

Please note that this is not a problem getting autofill suggestions; that is working well.  Nor is it a problem with differences between autofill and contacts.

Can anyone suggest a fix or workaround?

Re: Phonics and NVDA

Jane Sharp

You’re right, of course, that changing the dictionary can’t produce true phonics, only a very rough approximation. I was hoping this would be just good enough but substituting huh for h, for example, then affects the pronunciation of any words with h in as the speech reads all three letters in the substitution - I think that’s what it’s doing anyway.

get those sounds from character echo rather than the letter names, p e t, and then when she presses space to get the word pet pronounced correctly.
You would probably need to commission an add-on for this. I don't know of anything that can do it out of the box.

One of the problems you're going to run into, is that sounds like "puh" and "tuh", wherein you pronounce the "uh" part of the sound, are incorrect phonics. The P is supposed to be taught as just the plosive, without any vowel sound. Same for B--it's supposed to be just the lip action, with as minimal vowel involvement as possible. T should be just the tongue and teeth action, etc.
(The cost of being raised by an expert phonics teacher.)
Getting any synth to do that right is going to be difficult, and probably require phoneme work deeper than just letter manipulation.

Doing it with sound files of a human tied to each key would probably be more likely to produce phonics-accurate results, and, at least with my level of technical knowledge, would be practically more easy to implement, although someone with more experience at manipulating phonemic information at that level might find the synth just as workable.

I can change the pronunciation of the letters in the Dictionary but this messes up word echo.
Can you give an example of how that breaks?

Re: NVDA tutorials

Hi,
One huge caveat with my tutorial set: the latest edition is from 2018. Although quite comprehensive, it wasn't updated to talk about NvDA Settings interface and advancements in NVDA such as configuration profile hot keys, Chromium Edge, and countless changes. The tutorial set was also published before Add-on Updater was first released; if there was a 2021 edition of this tutorial set, Add-on Updater might be demonstrated, but then I'll be entering a phase of life (graduate education) that would not be ideal for producing further NVDA tutorials.
Cheers,
