It may be a remnant of an old Openbook but it is nothing to worry about.  If IBM had cared if Via Voice was used with other programs on your machine after you purchased it along with a program, they would have restricted its use as Vispero restricts its version of Eloquence to only its programs.  Since IBM could have done this for all the years it used Via Voice and didn’t, I consider that as meaning that they didn’t care if it was used with other programs.

Subject: [nvda] Question about SAPI 4 version of eloquence

Hi.  I use a combination of JAWS, OpenBook, and NVDA, so I have a fully-licenced copy of Eloquence.  The interesting thing is that what sounds like a combination of Eloquence and IBM Viavoice (depending on which voice you select) is listed as “SAPI 4” in the NVDA list of synthesizers.  The only thing I can think of regarding what sounds like the Viavoice synthesizer is that it might be a remnant from an older version of OpenBook.  Given the recent discussion about using software, I want to make sure I’m not doing anything wrong.

Thanks,

Louise

And will repeat:  Any discussion of hacked/cracked or otherwise illegal software is forbidden here.

If someone posts something that "is sketchy," even if they were not themselves aware that it is/was sketchy, there is no problem with another member who knows it to be so or suspects it to be so from raising the issue.  Those raising the issue should also do the group owner the courtesy of sending a message about this, as neither I nor Nimer are constantly in front of our respective keyboards and the situations need to be addressed and resolved.

In the case of this topic, had I not been reading it myself, I would have had no inkling of what had recently transpired.  At this point the matter is being addressed and, if indicated, the archive will be purged of any links to illegal software.

Software piracy is theft.  Encouraging software piracy can get groups shut down, as it should.

You are welcome, Chris.
The add-on itself is perfectly legal as it doesn't ship with the required library or libraries. Adding the required files doesn't entail any cracking whatsoever. In fact, if you happen to use JAWS or the SAPI 4 release of Eloquence which ships with the Kurzweil 1000, you already have the needed files. However, the following add-on does indeed ship the required library, eliminating the need to make further modifications. Just check here: https://github.com/pumper42nickel/eloquence_threshold

Chris, Eloquence all the way! However, IMO, there's really no need to pay for the SAPI version as it's relatively limited in some ways. I suggest the following feature-rich and up-to-date free add-on: https://github.com/ultrasound1372/NVDA-IBMTTS-Driver
If you add the required library to it (I mean the stuff which can't ship with the add-on), you'll have an awesome-sounding Eloquence/IBMTTS engine for NVDA. Then combine it with the following and no engine can match its unrivaled pronunciations: https://github.com/thunderdrop/IBMTTSDictionaries

Best,
Amir

Which is precisely what one would expect.

That's likely to be the pattern for each and every currently supported add-on (or other affiliated software) for NVDA.  These sorts of major transitions have happened before, and most assuredly will happen again.

Then you need to educate yourself.  (And that's a general statement)

Our group rules expressly forbid the discussion of or giving links to hacked/cracked software.  An entire group that used to be on Groups.io was shut down because they were a hacked/cracked software clearinghouse.

You can be pretty much assured that if a given piece of software is for sale, as in not open source or freeware, and there is no demo version from its maker, then any version of it other than what is for sale is not legal.

And, by the way, I am the moderator.  And as the moderator I am telling the membership at large that they are NOT to discuss hacked/cracked software and it is perfectly fine for any member to call-out another who attempts to do so (though they should also send a message to the owner address, too).  Such discussions are not permitted and those who instigate them can and will be put on moderated status or banned at the sole discretion of the group administrators.

Re: NVDA 2021.1 beta and Code Factory Voices

I haven't seen those articles, but the arbiter is Github which has accepted and hosted the project(s) with zero issues. And with most of them users are responsible for the provision of the drivers. Maybe because CodeFactory sells similar stuff, actively disseminating them isn't permitted. But before users pay for them, they have the right to know that alternative and more feature-rich solutions exist.

Illegal software? I've never heard such a thing. The IBMTTS add-on is perfectly legal especially when it doesn't give you the library. If it's illegal, do wait for its removal by the mods.

Does the beta also break the stand alone vocalizer package from Code Factory?

Re: NVDA 2021.1 beta and Code Factory Voices

Well, the Read Me section sort of explains it. But the IBMTTS/ViaVoice-related library makes the engine a bit more accurate with pronunciations. At the same time, it has a couple of issues with certain punctuation marks. So, all in all, I prefer the Eloquence library a version of which I also posted.
