Did you resolve this issue with NVDA not exiting from the menu? I just tried with the beta and it is working fine here for me. Have you restarted the PC since you installed the beta?

Could this be part of #12498, #12499? I haven't had time to look into that much, but it seems potentially related. Luke Quentin Christensen wrote:

Hi Jackie Is that the only place it is doing it saying unknown? do you get unknown spoken if down on the running applications area when you arrow through them or are they spoken out correctly. any other weird stuff or just in fire fox?
Does nvda work in other browsers?
Did you try setting nvda back to factory defaults to see if that fixed the problem?
I am guessing you would of uninstalled nvda all together but did you also do the following area when the run command is run %appdata% then pressed the enter key then found the nvda folder and either deleted it out all together then reinstalled nvda. .
I also find at times if it is only in the browser a reset of it fixes the problem when things go weird in it. I usually do this last.
The following page might help at https://malwaretips.com/blogs/reset-firefox-settings/

Could a corrupted Firefox profile cause this?
Can you try running with a clean profile from the commandline, and see if that fixes it? Windows+r, type: firefox.exe -p In the profile manager that opens, create a new profile and have Firefox open with it. Instructions from: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles Creating a profile After starting the Profile Manager as explained above, you can create a new, additional profile as follows: 1. In the Profile Manager, click Create Profile... to start the Create Profile Wizard. 2. Click Next and enter the name of the profile. Use a profile name that is descriptive, such as your personal name. This name is not exposed on the Internet. 3. Disregard the Choose Folder prompt unless you wish to choose where to store the profile on your computer. Warning: If you choose your own folder location for the profile, select a new or empty folder. If you choose a folder that isn't empty and you later remove the profile and choose the "Delete Files" option, everything inside that folder will be deleted. 4. To create the new profile, click FinishDone. You will be taken back to the Profile Manager and the new profile will be listed. When you first start Firefox with the new profile, you will be prompted to sign in to your Firefox Account so that you can [68]sync your data with the new profile (see below). Luke

It may be useful to note that there is no more options dialog in the tools

was gonna do that, Brian, but I was rather waiting for anyone who'd updated to weigh in on whether or not they were having any difficulty. Clearly a couple folks did so & said they weren't. So I uninstalled/reinstalled, & indeed, that fixed it. (huge sigh of relief). You just never know if an update is going to make changes that make a product unusable w/a screen reader, though the last time it happened in Firefox, we were given prior warning. Since none was issued this time, I felt it might be safe. Clearly somethin got corrupted. I didn’t mention that you can test an earlier version of Firefox
portable. You can get earlier versions here.
You may want to try that before running a restore point or
taking other actions such as reinstalling NVDA.

w/NVDA I see you answered my questions and that you tried the portable
version. What you are reporting makes me suspicious that something somehow
became corrupted in Windows or in NVDA. I don’t know if the Firefox update
had anything to do with this or if it was just a coincidence. I’ve seen
rare but remarkable coincidences.
there is a certain amount of risk and if you know about it and are willing
to accept it and/or if you have your system backed up, do you have System
Restore points available? You may want to try other tests first such as
trying a Chrome-based browser and seeing if it works properlhy. You may

the run option both using an NVDA.exe file and not using the installed version
