I agree jean.

Exactly what I told the above poster, I also gave them a way to rename the files though why is a different question.

Hello NVDA,

What is the smoothest way to rename file extensions on a USB drive?
I wish to have all of them appear as 'doc' files and not 'docx' files.
Can this be accomplished in WordPad or in Jarte?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Renaming File Extensions in Bulk

Well you can't, docx is the xml document file used for word formats 2007 and higher so it probably won't work.

but ok, press winkey and r.

type cmd and hit enter

then go to the letter of your drive, lets call it f

go to the directory the files are in by typing cd dirname\subdir, etc and hit enter.

if this is all in root then don't bother about that.

type ren or rename *.docx *.doc and hit enter.

all the files will be renamed.

Now weathher they will work is another story.

Docx is the new word document format doc is the older format from word 97 and below.

How do you create a click-through link?

In Microsoft Word (and, actually, most places) this is done by:

1. typing out whatever text it is you want to use for the link
2. copying the URL you want that text to go to
3. Select that text
4. Hit CTRL+K
5. Paste the URL into Address edit box (which is what you're in once the dialog is opened via CTRL+K).
6. Hitting the OK button.

After that, the text itself will appear as a hyperlink which, when activated, goes to the website whose address you provided.

Well it maybe because of the cloud glitch that was about last night.

It happened after I logged off for the night but I heard it on the news.

A lot of stuff couldn't run in the middle of the night.

But I was sleeping.

Just FYI, my first acquaintance with this utility was via a recommendation on one of the screen reader or other blind-centric technology lists.

And doing a bulk file conversion to a different file format, which changes the extension on the files so converted as part of that, is just fine.  That's completely different than just renaming something and giving it a file extension that is not consistent with the actual file format.

A big old, SECONDED!

I've seen bulk renaming used as a trick to allow certain files with extensions that can't be attached to email (e.g., EXE) be changed to something else, but the recipient knows they have to reverse the process on the other end.

I cannot fathom why anyone would want to change DOCX files to DOC files by extension change.  You need to open them and save them in DOC format, which is different than DOCX format.  Renaming RandomFile.docx to RandomFile.doc does not, in any way, shape, or form, make it "become" a true doc file, and anything trying to open it as though it were a true doc file is not going to be happy.

Still, there are reasons why one might want to change and extension and *not* change the format. We’ll see what the OP says if they decide to respond to the thread.

If you want to convert textfiles, I think pandoc is a great and eminently straightforward solution. It’s a command line utility; all you have to do is type in the arguments, and your file is converted in a snap. Of course there’s no GUI – if that’s scary, I guess you might want to try one of those other  solutions.

Still, the OP was about extensions only so let’s see.

It sounds as though those utilities actually convert the files from one format to another.  I don’t know if any information such as formatting may be lost or changed, but if you want to have a different format file, that’s the way to do it.  Changing the extension means you have a file of one kind matched with an incorrect extension.

changing the format means the file extension and the format of the file match.

While completely indorsing what others have said, if you really do have
some good reason for doing this, a tool like the following might help you.
I do not confirm its accessibility, or guarantee it in any other way. It
is just the first Google result for "convert multiple files from .docx to
.doc".

Re: Renaming File Extensions in Bulk

Hmm...I wouldn't bother making that particular change if I were you, but assuming you ahve good reason to do it, I would use command line.
The command "ren" will rename files. You can use wildcares. Make sure you know the path of the drive/folder you want to affect and eitehr navigate there with the "cd" command or type it in with the ren command. For example
Ren h:\documents\*.docx,*.doc
That should accomplish what you want.
But if you're trying to get documents to open on an old version of Word by changing the extension, this won't really work.

Re: NVDA 2021.1 and community add-ons: status page is now available

The following was written by Joseph Lee, one week ago, and I am bumping this thread because everyone needs to read this again.

If the add-on you have a question about is not part of the community add-ons page, but is maintained by a third-party, whether that's a company or individual, please direct questions regarding compatibility of these add-ons with NVDA 2021.1 to their respective maintainers.  They are the only sources who can give you accurate information about their update/maintenance plans for these add-ons.

From Joseph Lee, on June 1, 2021:

Hello NVDA users,

Many of you are wondering about whether or not your favorite NVDA add-ons will be ready for NVDA 2021.1. To answer this question, the add-ons community has prepared a status page listing add-ons hosted on community add-ons website and their NVDA 2021.1 compatibility status:

Add-ons and backwards incompatible NVDA releases (nvda-project.org)

Note that things can change without notice, and the page does not include newly added add-ons; add-ons added to community add-ons website in recent days will be included in the status page soon. Also, I have asked the add-ons community to update this document from time to time whenever backwards incompatible NVDA version enters beta testing phase (I myself will contribute to this document if my add-ons do become compatible with future NVDA releases; I might not be able to update add-ons in a timely manner while taking graduate courses).

As always, feedback about add-ons should be sent to add-on authors.

Thanks.

Brian, you asked what need does this address? It addresses the need for people to have clearer, more familiar-sounding espeak voices with a choice of speaking styles and inflections or intonations. Since most people like Klatt-based voices, such modifications would give people several different klatt-based espeak voices to choose from. Also it may be helpful for a good-sounding klatt-voice with a familiar speaking style to be set as the espeak default voice, rather than the non-klatt harsher-sounding voices.
