Re: emoji question

Nothing has changed in regard to the emoji picker in recent updates to Windows.  This is likely either a Windows irregularity or NVDA irregularity on your machine.

The first thing I'd try is:  Using SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) to Repair Windows 8 & 10

If things don't return to normal after that, should then try: The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues

Please report back on how events are progressing as you try these things.

emoji question

JinYoun

Hi, how do you enter emojis? I tried  to do it today in an email using NVDA and it won't let me arrow through the options to choose one. Jumping around from focus and browse mode... Before when I tried this a while back, I didn't have an issue with choosing an emoji, but recently notice this happening and cannot enter emojis...
I bring up the emoji choices by pressing the windows key and . key.
This is on windows 10.
Thank you

Gene,

As I said earlier, more than 200 words per minute and I want to slow it down,  I’ve tried many voices with several synthysiers  over the years and about 170 words per minute is my comfort zone.

No,  I’ll never win the listening race!

JAWS doesn’t have a pleasant voice like the newer synthesizers generally do, but I’d far rather be able to easily understand Eloquence at 350 words per minute.  I can actually understand it faster, but about 350 words per minute is about the highest speed I can comfortably comprehend what is being said.

I think I know the cause but I don’t know how it is solved.  I think that either the program isn’t communicating with the product manufacturer for recertification, as it does from time to time, or something is corrupted in the company records and the information being sent isn’t recognized.

We’ll see  how others have solved the problem.

I consider this to be a drawback in the product.  Why should it have to repeatedly be verified by sending information back to the manufacturer?  Screen-readers don’t do this, once they are activated, they stay activated.  If, for some unexpected reason, you are not online when activation is required, you will lose access to speech from the product.  I mean circumstances where you want to use the computer but you don’t have an Internet connection available.  I expect that normally, when you are once again online, activation automatically takes place.  But it should not be assumed that the user will always be on line when using the product.

Perhaps those who use the product should really start a campaign to let the manufacturer know that this is not something people are willing to accept any longer.

Hi Chris,

There was a p s at the end of my message saying that I am using Zara, a 1core voice.

No, I  just don’t like  highspeed t t s or screenreaders.

I just can’t stand the speed.  Maybe, if I had started using screenreaders before I hit 60, I might have adapted to the high speeds.  I think I usually listen at about 170 words per minute;  when  it over 200,  I have a negative reaction.

I should add that the legal version is actually superior.  It pauses properly at the ends of sentences where periods are encountered and the voice has more high end which I consider more pleasant.

The amount of passion that surrounds what is, or is not, a good voice comes down to personal preference based on one's own needs.  What one loves, another despises.

What I don't get is the rigidity that surrounds preferred voices.  I get why one would want to stick with one's preferred voice or voices, but others should suffice "in a pinch," because pinches do occasionally occur.  It's sort of analogous to having a spare screen reader that you can use as your secondary when, for whatever reason, your preferred one is not playing well with some specific thing, be it a website, software, or something else.

what is worse is that until you can get a different speech working you can't do anything because no matter what key you press you get that message and nothing else.

What would cause the "please register this product) to pop up over night? There has been no major change in the system. It was running just fine at 2am this morning.

How you get around that depends on the screen-reader being used.  I haven’t used JAWS enough in years to describe how you would get around the problem.

In NVDA, if you issue the command control NVDA key s, you will be in the select synthesizer dialog.  that is, hold the NVDA key and control and type s while doing so.  That opens the select synthesizer dialog.
Do this when you have the speech working you want.  Then see what is available and what you want to switch to.  memorize how often you up or down arrow to the emergency synthesizer you want to use and press enter to make it active.  In that way, you can get speech back.

You will then want to go into the speech parameters dialog, NVDA key control v, and adjust speech parameters such as rate.

Tab around and see how the pitch for capital adjustment is set.  Often, the adjustment produces very unpleasant sound when typing or reading a capital letter when spelling a word.  To avoid this, type something low like 6 or 7 in the edit field.  You can always raise it.

Of course there is a way, but they've elected not to employ it.   And I find that annoying, too, as we all know that there are plenty of times where we need to use our computers without internet connectivity.

Re: NVDA 2021.1 Beta 3 now available

Hi Quentin,

I downloaded and checked this version. One issue I found in MS outlook 2019. Total number of messages NVDA is saying wrong. So, I checked in other folders such as Drafts, sent, RSS etc. I found the same issue. Kindly check it once. Also I have read in the What’s new, speech viewer has close button. But, when I use tab in the speech viewer, I am not getting the close button. But, I am able to close it by pressing Alt + F4.

Regards,

Naveen M
