Re: Looks like Code Factory has updated their voices to support NVDA 2021.1
I just got the sapi update after reading this message.

A note, there are a lot of updated voices, so you will have to uninstall then reinstall all the voices that have updates after updating your eloquence and vocaliser sapi package. Also please note that a lot of voices will become uninstalled after the updates but their names will remain in the registry. To fix it appears all you need to do is uninstall all the voices that have updates, and reinstall all voices. I wish there was some way to remove all the broken voices or to update all the voices but oh well, its taken me an hour and the voices are installed. Several new voices as well as ml varients so maybe ml means mobile they don't sound much different. Its good to see a few more voices especially another one for australia.

Hi,

Just to jump in on the M1 comment. I have a new MacBook Air with the M1, i run the insiders build of windows 10 and use NVDA through that. Works surprisingly well, i do have the base MacBook Air with 8Gb of RAM and the performance is surprising. So if you have more RAM to dedicate to the VM than i do the performance will be even better. I do however, find the current performance acceptable.

Re: Code Factory voices for nvda

In my case I encountered an error when I upgraded my instance of NVDA from 2020.4 to 2021.1 RC2 after installing the new version of the Code Factory addon. I had to go through a lot of drama to fix the problem. Long story short: I do recommend deactivating your current license prior to installing the new version of both NVDA and the addon. It's a bit more work but may save some people some headaches.

I agree with Gene 100% the only dectalk version that is available is a hardware based in a usb versio, and its not cheap and because I never heard it I don’t know about its speech quality compared with the dectalk of the venerable window-eyes.

As far as I know, there is no legal Dectalk add-on at least not one that sounds at all like what would be expected. I don’t know if it is possible to purchase Dectalk as a stand alone synthesizer, such as a SAPI 5 synthesizer, but I’ve never heard of that either.
You may be able to get more information about the legal ability to purchase Dectalk with a search but I’ve been on this list since the rather early days of NVDA, and I think there would have been information on the list before this if there were a legal add-on, and a legal way to ;purchase Dectalk, at least at anything like a reasonable price, given the interest in Dectalk.
Years ago, someone who worked with Dectalk provided a legal version of Dectalk but it was evidently very old and it sounded very different than the Dectalk people expect.

Re: DECtalk Add-on for NVDA

I agree with Gene. While I won’t say that I’ve done an exhaustive search the searching that I have done leads to nothing but dead ends. I specifically looked for Sapi5 voices as I seriously doubt that an NVDA addon exists that will be compatible with version 2021.1. So far I’ve found nothing that appears to be both legal as well as purchasable.

Re: Compatibility updates to the "Golden Cursor" add-on will not be provided
David Moore
Golden cursor was my favorite add-on! I used it a lot to access controls with math programs that I use to tutor! Who can I get with to have this add-on updated so I can use this important software? I would pay for Golden cursor to be compatible with future versions of NVDA! I am already using Windows 11 dev insiders update! Please get back with me and suggest what I can do with future versions of NVDA and my very beloved Golden Cursor! Thanks so much!

Just wanted to thank all of you for the responses. It has calmed my nerves greatly! From what I understand, this is the latest generation of MacBook Pro so I’m imagining it has the necessary hardware to run windows. If anything, maybe I’m in for a real treat and I’ll become a McIntosh fanboy after this experience. LOL. Thanks again guys

Hi, I consulted Google before sending this but I only came across this situation for NVDA testing purposes so I don’t want to presume that information also applies to the end user experience. I accepted a new developer job and found out today my new employer is shipping me a MacBook Pro as my work computer. This was surprising considering we’ll be developing in C#.Net in Visual Studio, an IDE for which I do not believe there is even a Mac version at this time. Sounds like we’ll be using BootCamp or something similar. I have zero experience with Macs and am terrified this is going to be a huge and unexpected learning curve that will slow down my onboarding. Anyway, is it possible to use NVDA in a Windows mode of Mac and does it work just like on a real PC? One of those articles I skimmed mentioned that the Mac doesn’t have an Insert key, the default NVDA key and that there might be some other keyboard discrepancies, but I would plan on just connecting an external Windows-style keyboard anyway, provided that will work. Any reassurance, tips or guidance on this would be hugely appreciated. I’ve already resigned from my current company and will be starting the new job in two weeks so I’m kind of freaking out right now, Ha.
Thank you, Luke

Re: DECtalk Add-on for NVDA
Roger Stewart
I'd like one of those as well. Someone sent me a trial version of one and it sort of worked. It made a few weird mistakes and needed work. This was several years back so it wouldn't even install in a new version of NVDA. I still have it somewhere if there's anyone who might be able to fix it up for today's use.

Re: Compatibility updates to the "Golden Cursor" add-on will not be provided
HI all, To clarify: although I'm listed as the last maintainer of Golden Cursor, I viewed myself as maintaining it on behalf of the NVDA community (the add-on wasn't developed by me originally) as the community lost contact with the original add-on developer. Since I stopped maintaining this add-on in early 2020, coupled with life changes I'm about to go through, I won't be able to maintain Golden Cursor again i.e. no compatibility update plans (sorry). Cheers, Joseph

Re: Running NVDA on a MacBook with BootCamp or similar?

Hey Luke, as long as your Mac is an Intel-based Mac, you will have no problem running NVDA with windows 10 on BootCamp. Although my primary screenreader of choice is jaws, I am familiar with NVDA, and do follow this list. I think you’ll find that most max running on Boot Camp run better than most Windows PC‘s. your NVDA modifier can be said to caps, and you can also use an external keyboard if you need to. If you have any questions, or need a little assistance, you are more than welcome to mail me off list. Guy

Visual Studio for Mac exists for some time now - see here https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/mac/#vs_mac_table I haven't used it myself but from various lists I gather it is more or less accessible with VoiceOver Sounds like we'll be using BootCamp or something similar. I havezero experience with Macs and am terrified this is going to be a huge and unexpected learning curve that will slow down my onboarding. If you've never used Mac with VO before and it'll turn out you're indeed required to use VS under Mac then it certainly would. Any reassurance, tips or guidance on this would be hugely appreciated. I've been using Windows via \Bootcamp on my Mac for about a year without much troubles with NVDA it was however an older model and more importantly a desktop one. If your Macbook is going to be an one of the recently released with an M1 processor then you're out of luck since Windows cannot be made to run on it natively for the time being and while virtualizing it appears to be possible there is apparently a big lag with assistive technologies when using it that way. Also an external keyboard is certainly something which should be considered since newest Mac models don't have a physical row of function keys and while VoiceOver allows to emulate them it is impossible to do under windows. -- Regards Lukasz
