Re: Journal Software

Gene

How would you want past entries to be searched?  I’ve never looked into journal software.  If I am keeping a list of entries on a subject and adding more over time, I place a phrase such as next entry on a line by itself before every new one.  I then use Notepad’s find command to move from entry to entry and, by reading a bit of each entry, perhaps the first line or less, I can very quickly determine if I want to read the past entry.  You also might want to keep a key word describing each or certain entries for fast reference, such as Next entry music or concerts or something that will tell you what the entry is about.

I use notepad just because it’s a very light weight program and I don’t benefit from a word processor in such a context.  I’m also more used to opening Notepad than another word processor but what you use is, of course your decision and if you want a light weight word processor, Word;pad is already on the machine, and there are other possibilities such as JARTE.

If you are worried about division by year, just write the name of the year on its own line when it changes such as 2022

I’d be interested in what journal writing programs offer.  But what I’m describing meets my needs when I’m doing something that is or is like a journal or a series I’m saving on a topic I’m interested in such as a number of articles on the same subject.

Hello, everyone.

I have really been wanting to start keeping a journal.

I don't particularly want to do something like this in Word,
LibreOffice, or any other word processor. I would ultimately love to
find something which would allow me to quickly access past entries if I
would ever want to look back at them. I have been on the hunt for a
dedicated journal writing application, but am not finding one that is
fully accessible. I used RedNotebook when I used screen magnification
much more regularly, but now that I rely on NVDA much more than
anything, I want to be able to write a journal with as little use of
vision as possible.

Are there any fully (or mostly) accessible apps out there for keeping a
journal?

If not...I have recently been thinking of trying to develop my
programming skills (which are minimal at best at present) and try to
figure out what it would take to develop one myself.

I appreciate any input!

Thanks, everyone!

Re: Are there up to date add-ons for Winamp?

Steve Wettlaufer

Unless something has changed, Winamp isn't out of support.  It was updated to version 5.8 back in 2019 and I believe there are still plans for it.

Odd that the add-on works for some and not for others.  It very definitely doesn't work for me.  I was warned that it would be disabled when I updated and that it was.

Hi Steve,

I looked in my list of add-ons after updating to 2021.1 and it says enabled and when I use Winamp, it works with no problems. I am running 1.2 of the app.

Hi everyone,

Forgive me if I missed something here on the list or couldn't find it in a search for some reason, but I'm curious about the availability of add-ons for Winamp.  The Extended Winamp 1.2 that I had been relying on forever obviously no longer works after the 2021.1 version update.  Are there plans for it to be updated?  If not, are there other options out there that perform the same or similar functions?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: NVDA Add-On that announces that Cut, Copy, & Paste have been triggered

Good day Abdul

I thank you.

I once installed it, but did realise that it does announce the command
to copy, cut and paste.

However, it does not announce the append command.

Is there a way in which the append command is set up so that NVDA can
echo it like JAWS does?

I need these commands to be announced.

Your assistance is appreciated in advance.

Re: NVDA Global Commands Extension

David Griffith

If you want to learn about how to use this add on I would recommend 3 easy steps.

  1. Hit NVDA plus J – you will hear a tone entering you into the  Global Commands layer mode – now press  H and this will put you into menu of all available commands from which you can execute and learn the  keyboard shortcut for each command. So for example you will be able to change global speaker volume but also learn NVDA J then control up and down arrow will do the same thing.
  2. NVDA J then G will open the user guide.
  3. Finally going to  NVDA Preferences menu will allow you to open the settings for the add on. You will need to go here if you want to for example, check the loop single letter elements  shortcut on browser web pages which will introduce to NVDA the Jaws like ability to wrap around from the bottom of the web page  back to the top again. The add on will announce what is happening so there is no confusion as to where you are on the page.

NVDA Global Commands Extension

David Griffith

NVDA Global Commands Extension has just prompted me to update from version 9.7 to 9.8.

Given the problem identified  by at least one person yesterday with installing  I thought I would re-post the download link for the add-on in case that resolves that issue for them.

Again copied from the user guide . I hope it  appears as a correct link this time.

Uh, huh.  I'm sorry, but when a site (winamp.com) is not using https protocol, the last official release was in excess of three years ago, and a leaked preview was the last release several years ago, there's nothing else coming.

Winamp is as dead as a doornail.

This should really be on the discussion list, but I don’t know who is on that list who is participating in this thread.   I’ll make the following point as briefly as I can.

Just because Winamp is old doesn’t mean it may not have real advantages because it has been around so long and people have developed utilities or other  support for it.

The late and missed Carlos developed a very easy to use time marker utility.  I often use for time markers when I’m listening to a book using Winamp.  JAWS has a time marker feature as well.

I don’t know what other players may or may not have such a feature.

Will those who want to discuss this further do so on the chat list, at least if you want me to reply with information about the utility?  Or write me off list.

I can learn it. Chris Scarstid taught me how to use hot keys with various players  like winamp and windows media player.  If there’s a will there’s a way.

It's a media player like Winamp. I didn't say it will behave exactly

like Winamp. You will need to learn how to use it, like any other new

program you've never used before.

Re: Are there up to date add-ons for Winamp?

Well technically there is supposed to be a new winamp coming out.

There is wacup which is the winamp community revamp project, but in may radiognome has again said its going to continue developing winamp6, and has asked for more developers but who knows.

You can customize hotkeys to act like what you were used to in Winamp, if that suits you. It's very configurable.

Re: Acapela Voices V1.7: Another False Positive Conflict With MalwareBytes Premium

It's also worth reporting false positives to whatever scanning engine maker where they are occurring.

They do happen, and most of the time they get fixed pretty promptly when reported to the various scanning engines.  I've had several corrected for Windows Defender/Security and at least one for Malwarebytes (a while back).

Acapela Voices V1.7: Another False Positive Conflict With MalwareBytes Premium

David Goldfield

This is for those who use or are thinking of purchasing the Acapela addon for NVDA. In a previous version of NVDA I noticed that my Acapela voices would no longer load. I eventually traced the problem to MalwareBytes Premium identifying colibri.dll as a form of malware. I informed Acapela about this problem, created an exclusion for the file and promptly forgot about it. After upgrading NVDA to version 2021.1 I installed V1.7 of the Acapela voices and received a “cannot load acaTTS synthesizer driver” message when attempting to switch to the Acapela synthesizer. I actually didn’t even remember the MalwareBytes issue I had earlier and assumed that it might have been either a licensing issue or a corrupted file within the addon’s folder. I tried deactivating and reactivating my license and even uninstalled and reinstalled NVDA, deleting the contents of my Appdata\NVDA folder for good measure in the process. I contacted Acapela, who responded quickly and asked a few questions regarding the contents of specific folders. Finally, they asked what antivirus program I was using which jogged my memory of the false positive I received earlier from MalwareBytes. Sure enough MalwareBytes showed that I had several notifications which were the results of the program quarantining yet another file that it didn’t like, that being acatts.dll. Unfortunately, MalwareBytes does not seem to provide any sort of obvious audible method for notifying users that it just quarantined a file, something I plan to reach out to them about. Bottom line: I added that file to the MalwareBytes allow list and my Acapela voices now function as expected. I sent Acapela the relevant portion of the MalwareBytes report and asked that they please look into this. I just wanted to pass on this information to anyone else considering the purchase of these voices or to those who may be wrestling with this issue.

Re: Are there up to date add-ons for Winamp?

Hi all,

Extended Winamp add-on is being updated. For this add-on, editing the add-on manifest isn't enough - a change was made to NVDA that requires this add-on to be modified. As a result, it will drop support for NVDA releases earlier than 2020.1.

As for when the new version will be released, it depends on when it will be published on community add-ons website.

Cheers,

Joseph

I can learn it. Chris Scarstid taught me how to use hot keys with various players  like winamp and windows media player.  If there’s a will there’s a way.

It's a media player like Winamp. I didn't say it will behave exactly

like Winamp. You will need to learn how to use it, like any other new

program you've never used before.

I don't think it needs an add-on, but I have no idea what your

experience will be like.

I was also one of those who held onto Winamp long after it was obvious that it would likely never return. I recently switched to VLC Media Player. This product also has similar keystrokes that are in Winamp and, in fact, are more intuitive and can also be configured. It has a dizzying array of options in its preferences dialog. After a short time of using the program I’m to the point where I wouldn’t switch back to Winamp even if development resumed.

Hi, does Foobar need an addon to run it? You say it works like winamp? If Winamp quits working that’s what I’ll switch to.

You can customize hotkeys to act like what you were used to in Winamp,

if that suits you. It's very configurable.
