Hi Everyone,

While I'm trying to get used to NVDA, as I am coming from JAWS after 30 years. I like it so far, but I have more to learn about it.

My question is what is the name of the male voice that first comes on when installing NVDA? I like that voice, if I could only speed up the voice, I would like that even better!  I am currently using Zira not sure of the spelling or the name though.  I do like that voice also.  Is the Zira voice from Windows?

I still use Winamp for music, myself, but..I’m pretty sure it’s dead software. I am running 5.666 on my desktop, and I installed that 5.8 beta or hack or whatever the hell it is on my laptop. I really think the only thing they did for 5.8 was to remove some dead plugins.

The addon doesn’t seem to do much for me.

The good news is, as long as Windows continues to support Windows Direct Sound – winamp will probably still work. Sure, it’s legacy, but not even Foobar uses wasapi natively from what I can tell. Seems audio standards takea  really long time to catch on.

Unless something has changed, Winamp isn't out of support.  It was updated to version 5.8 back in 2019 and I believe there are still plans for it.

Odd that the add-on works for some and not for others.  It very definitely doesn't work for me.  I was warned that it would be disabled when I updated and that it was.

Hi, Yes, Bryan is right. Winamp is an old piece of softwhere. I installed the addon Confirmed Ron it works for me. I use it all the time.

I looked in my list of add-ons after updating to 2021.1 and it says enabled and when I use Winamp, it works with no problems. I am running 1.2 of the app.

Another thought, and that's all it is, is looking into whether the program you intend to use allows it's own shortcuts to be tweaked.

Since you use NVDA everywhere it makes little sense to redefine what you're already familiar with.  But if you're not yet familiar with the specific command structure of the program you're going to use, and it's possible to remap, you might want to consider it.

When using GoToMeeting, you must use its  HTML5 client. You do this by appending a parameter to the joining link that has been given to you.

Go to meeting will open in a browser and you should be able to navigate without problems.

Would someone please give me some tips about using GoToMeeting with NVDA? I downloaded an accessibility document online, but what I get when activating a link to a meeting invitation doesn’t match what the document says.

Hi, Gene.

When I relied more heavily upon magnification, I used an application called RedNotebook[1] for journaling. It had a calendar built into it displayed very journal entry per day written. Al that you would have to do is to activate a date on the calendar which had a journal entry. It offered other features such as the adding of pictures and other things of that nature. I don't know much about programming/APIs, but it was written in Qt, I believe. Unfortunately, it is mostly inaccessible to NVDA. It has a simple interface, but it allowed for a quick way to access journal entries as well as the ability to print out to PDF.

The features described on the application's page are pretty much what I'm looking for in an application of this nature.

I guess I really like the idea of compartmentalization which is not particularly offered by a standard word processor.

I do, but that will be too much trouble than what it's worth, plus it's not hooked up to my pc. I don't have an audio in or a monitor out for this thing, it's quite basic for an 8 channel mixer.

Or do you own a hardware mixer, maybe a powered mixer? You could feed the computer out into that, and turn up the monitor level as high as you want.

Not very, and ear bloods hurt my ears. My headphone jack sounds like something from the 80s. lol!I had a nice 1 jack sound card once that broke when I sat on it, that thing was nice. If you all want to know more write me off line.

If your computer has a 1/8 jack for audio out, what happens if you plug some cheap earbuds into it? How loud does that get?

But based  on your description, I wonder if there is a problem with how the SAPI 5 program is running on your machine.  When I tried the demo, there was inflection similar to that of JAWS.  The volume, as I recall, was fine.  I don’t recall if there was a volume setting in NVDA itself when using the program. 

 

If I understand what you are reporting, you hear no inflection.  this is definitely not expected behavior.  I’ve tried the SAPI program on more than one computer and had inflection similar to JAWS.

Hello. I’m trying the eloquence add on and have also tried the sapi add on. I find that:

 

1. The rate boost is gone.
2. The inflection slider is missing
3. The volume of the voice is way too low even at 100 percent.

I guess I’m too used to the IBM tts voice I’ve been using now since about 2017. I’m also used to the old eloquence from about 2003. Lol. Is there any way to get these sliders back with nvda? –
