The male voice you hear when nvda first started, might be David. It and the Zira voice are both part of the micro soft 1core voiceds that come with win10.

Hi Everyone,

While I'm trying to get used to NVDA, as I am coming from JAWS after 30 years. I like it so far, but I have more to learn about it.

My question is what is the name of the male voice that first comes on when installing NVDA? I like that voice, if I could only speed up the voice, I would like that even better! I am currently using Zira not sure of the spelling or the name though. I do like that voice also. Is the Zira voice from Windows?

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Janet

Peace Be With You.

I am uncertain as to what is being asked for as far as append.  Can someone explain?

I trust you are well and safe.

I am trying to cope under this uncertain situation.

May I ask you for help?

I need an NVDA addon that will announce copy, cut, paste and append

text like JAWS does.

Are you aware of any?

Your assistance is appreciated in advance.

Hi, only one I know of is Clipspeak.  You can check on the addons page.  Some people were having problems with it. Not sure if it is going to be continued.

Odd that the add-on works for some and not for others.  It very definitely doesn't work for me.  I was warned that it would be disabled when I updated and that it was.

You're quite welcome.  Given the finite number of keyboard shortcuts, there are those occasions where remapping the couple of "collisions" so that those no longer collide is the best and easiest solution.

Re: NVDA find command not working

Janet,

Several points, and none meant to sound as harsh as they may be taken to be:

1.  What is the "complicated transcription program"?  Generalities do not help.  Identifying software and version is essential as no one can divine what you're using nor know whether they've used it themselves.

2.  I presume this is medical transcription, and understand the privacy concerns.  But can you not replicate the issue when you create a "junk document" where you paste in completely non-private text from somewhere?  That would potentially allow someone to offer remote assistance or for you to share the screen.

There is no way, really, to assist based on the dearth of specific information.  Any potential assistant needs to know what program(s) are involved, or websites, etc.

I think people are too casual about disabling security utilities if they cause a small amount of inconvenience.  The whole point of UAC is that it makes it less likely that software will be installed on your machine even if you are careful.  You don’t necessarily have the ability to refuse unwanted software, such as malware.  Sites may have hacked third party advertising which may try to install it without user notice or intervention.  Is avoiding the slight inconvenience of having to use alt y when UAC comes up worth the much worse problems malware can cause?  Even if you have to alt tab to the window first, is avoiding that annoyance worth dealing with malware on your machine?

I’ve seen it claimed that UAC is easily evaded by malware designers.  That may be.  I’ve seen little discussion of that.  But even if it only prevents thirty or forty percent of installations, I’d gladdly have the small inconveniences it causes.

This is a suggestion relating to the NVDA updater, rather than NVDA itself, and it's a question really for the programmers behind that installer.

I started updating to NVDA 2021.1 on my Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet at about 1pm. At 3pm the progress beeps were still beeping and, assuming the update had hit a problem, I tried to abort the update but discovered there was no way to cancel the update.

Curious whether the update process would hang on my Dell laptop, I turned that on and was prompted that a new version of NVDA was available. I launched it and, immediately after the download had finished and I'd activated the Install button, I was taken to the Windows permissions prompt. And that is when I twigged that I'd not been taken to that on my tablet. When I returned to my tablet and Alt+Tabbed around the running programs , indeed the permissions promt was open, but I hadn't been taken to it, nor had I been notified it had opened and was expecting a response.

So my suggestion / question is whether there is any way that the progress beeps can be started only after the security button has been confirmed, rather than as soon as the Update button has been pressed. If the updater hadn't spent 2 hours beeping, then I wouldn't have thought it was doing something (or attempting to do something) as part of the update process.

The moment I found the security prompt and confirmed I wanted to go ahead with the installation, it completed within 30 seconds, as it usually does!

Just a thought :)

I am using a complicated transcription program, and it would be great if NVDA could find things on the screen. However, the NVDA command is not working. Is there anything I can do? Unfortunately, I cannot share the screen or get remote support as that would violate confidentiality.

Janet,

Another thought, and that's all it is, is looking into whether the program you intend to use allows it's own shortcuts to be tweaked.

Since you use NVDA everywhere it makes little sense to redefine what you're already familiar with.  But if you're not yet familiar with the specific command structure of the program you're going to use, and it's possible to remap, you might want to consider it.

You can do notebooks, sections, and pages, so you could have say, a notebook per year, a section per month, something like that. You should have a pretty flexible organization scheme, and you can name the sections and I think the pages as well. So it should be pretty easy to navigate and find things.

I don’t see anything related to inflection in the SAPI program.  However, if you open the settings for Eloquence, not in NVDA, but in the program, you can tab around and see check boxes for volume and a few other settings.  You can check the checkboxs for the item you want and you can then tab to a field where you change the setting.  The check boxes say something like voice force change.

But based  on your description, I wonder if there is a problem with how the SAPI 5 program is running on your machine.  When I tried the demo, there was inflection similar to that of JAWS.  The volume, as I recall, was fine.  I don’t recall if there was a volume setting in NVDA itself when using the program.

If I understand what you are reporting, you hear no inflection.  this is definitely not expected behavior.  I’ve tried the SAPI program on more than one computer and had inflection similar to JAWS.

Subject: [nvda] problems wiht the nvda eloquence and sapi eloquence add on/apps

Hello. I’m trying the eloquence add on and have also tried the sapi add on. I find that:

  1. The rate boost is gone.
  2. The inflection slider is missing
  3. The volume of the voice is way too low even at 100 percent.

I guess I’m too used to the IBM tts voice I’ve been using now since about 2017. I’m also used to the old eloquence from about 2003. Lol. Is there any way to get these sliders back with nvda? –
