Re: Voices With NVDA Question Please.

Janet,

I am not quite sure where you are looking but in NVDA Speech settings (NVDA + N, P, S, S) the first item in the pane of settings is Synthesizer and there is a Change Button.  If you're using Windows 10, and the synth is not set to Windows OneCore Voices, then you need to hit the Change button and select it from the list of available synths.  On my machine, those are eSpeak NG, Windows OneCore Voices, and Microsoft Speech API version 5 (more commonly referred to by its acronym SAPI5).

Once I have OneCore Voices as the synth, back in the main pane I can select the specific voice, the rate, a checkbox for rate boost (unchecked, in my case), pitch, volume, and a number of other things you can tweak.

I'd imagine that what is available in that pane can vary slightly depending on what parameters your selected synthesizer allows you to tweak.

Hi, As far as I know, when you first install NVDA on Windows 10 it defaults to Microsoft David from OneCore. On earlier versions of Windows it defaults to eSpeak (the one with an infamous reputation) because OneCore doesn't exist on earlier versions of Windows. Even if you're using another voice like Zira or Mark or whatever for most of the time, David will still be the voice used on secure screens like the startup screen unless you tweak a setting in the General category.

HI,
Thank you so much, I did find Max, and it doesn't sound like the voice that comes on when I turn on NVDA. I did go through the languages, and I did change it to English America, but Max still sounds like English Scotland, or like English Britain etc.

Thank you again. Janet

When I pick a voice, and tab, I only get options of rate, rate boost, pitch, volume, automatic, etc, nothing about voices or cores.

I don’t know if it is a voice or a variant.  Do you know about variants and how to see different ones?  I don’t use One Core voices but if they have variants, pick a voice, tab I  believe once, then move up and down and see if there are variants.  When you tab to the vfield, you should hear variant spoken.  If you don’t, you aren’t in the right place or the One Core voices don’t have them.  Others who have One Core voices can discuss that further.

One point asked about in the original message is how to speed up the voice.  I don’t have Windows 10 and so I can’t describe how you speed it up in Windows 10.  To speed it up in NVDA, open the voice dialog, NVDA key control v, tab to rate, and right arrow until the slider is at the speed you want or at maximum.

You will likely want the speech to be faster and this discussion explains how to do it in Windows itself.  I don’t use Windows 10 and I can’t discuss how it is done.  If you have questions, you may ask here, of course.

Hi, Yeah if you're using windows 10 it defaults to the Microsoft
OneCore voices on your system. David is the default voice but Zira is
also another of the OneCore voices. There are a few more but you'll
have to browse around. You can also install additional voices for
other languages in windows speech settings. To increase the speech
rate, press control nvda v to access the voice dialog and tab around
to the speech rate setting. Rate boost is also available to increase
the speed even more. You can also press control shfit nvda with any of
the arrow keys to explore the voice settings loop.

I use David as my voice with NVDA, but at a slightly faster rate, and if it's not Microsoft David it's so close that using MS David would probably suit anyone who likes that installer voice.

Pretty sure they can't, no. But OneNote might be able to, they make a big deal of being able to add things. Apparently I started one for Youtube videos I wanted to save for later, and the one I have in there shows up as a working link. You still might want actual journal software instead, but I'd say if you've got Windows 10 or a late enough version of Microsoft Office, OneNote is probably worth at least taking a look at. It's free after all. I just checked with my wife, who can see, and she says you can put images in OneNote. So you could just set up a little test with a few images, see what kind of organization you could do, stuff like that, to see if it would work for you.

I see. Notepad indeed doesn't support images. Microsoft Word and alike would support that, but not sure how convenient that would be - back in the days when I could see Word was notoriously stubborn in putting my images in the worst possible corner of the document. So for images indeed I would imagine some specialized software might be better.

Subject: [nvda] Voices With NVDA Question Please.

Hi Everyone,

While I'm trying to get used to NVDA, as I am coming from JAWS after 30 years. I like it so far, but I have more to learn about it.

My question is what is the name of the male voice that first comes on when installing NVDA? I like that voice, if I could only speed up the voice, I would like that even better!  I am currently using Zira not sure of the spelling or the name though.  I do like that voice also.  Is the Zira voice from Windows?

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Janet

Peace Be With You.

Hi Brian,

Ok, I am now going to try and listen to David again, just to see just how close those two voices sound.  Give me a few minutes, and I will report back.

I just installed NVDA 2021.1 and I'll bet my bottom dollar that the voice now used by the installer is Microsoft David, which is a Microsoft OneCore Voice.

I use David as my voice with NVDA, but at a slightly faster rate, and if it's not Microsoft David it's so close that using MS David would probably suit anyone who likes that installer voice.

Hi, Janet,

I think Max is the original voice that's in NVDA.

I don’t know what voice that is.  Are you saying that when you run NVDA, you hear a certain voice and if you change it, you can’t get back to it?

Hi Gene,

The problem I have with raising the voice, is I can’t find the voice in order to change the rate though.  I can only find the three voices David, Zira, Mark, and I can change the rate for either of them, just not the voice I hear when I turn on NVDA.

Oh, okay. The earlier NVDA voice that was used 2010 or earlier sounded awful.  I got used to it. Then I guess maybe 2017 or something. It got better.

The male voice  you hear  when nvda  first started, might be David.  It and the Zira voice are both part of the micro soft 1core voiceds that come with win10.

Re: Journal Software

I have been keeping a journal for years in plain text format. Having said this I don't necessarily want to convince you of anything, but I would like to understand why plain notepad wouldn't work for you? In your message you mentioned that you would like to be able to quickly access entries from the past - that can be quite easily accomplished with searching in notepad. So I feel perhaps you forgot to mention some other desired functionality that you cannot achieve with plain notepad?

Hello, everyone.

I have really been wanting to start keeping a journal.

I don't particularly want to do something like this in Word, LibreOffice, or any other word processor. I would ultimately love to find something which would allow me to quickly access past entries if I would ever want to look back at them. I have been on the hunt for a dedicated journal writing application, but am not finding one that is fully accessible. I used RedNotebook when I used screen magnification much more regularly, but now that I rely on NVDA much more than anything, I want to be able to write a journal with as little use of vision as possible.

Are there any fully (or mostly) accessible apps out there for keeping a journal?

If not...I have recently been thinking of trying to develop my programming skills (which are minimal at best at present) and try to figure out what it would take to develop one myself.

I appreciate any input!

Thanks, everyone!
