reading status bar with nvda

mukesh jain

hello,
i would like to know that what is the keystroke to read the status bar
with nvda? for instance, when my focus is in the list view, whenever i
try to read status bar i press the keystroke insert+shift+end key as i
am using the laptop with window 10 nvda 2021. but pressing this
keystroke, nvda announces, no status line found. i had the same
difficulty with earlier versions of nvda. but i am able to read the
status bar with jaws by pressing insert+page down. so what could be
the reason for it?
looking forward for your valluable inputs.
thanks,
Mukesh

Hi,

I just installed it and tested.

Once connected i turned off quick nav then the keyboard seemed to work fine. I could navigate the start menu, open apps etc

Hi,

The ability to let NVDA detect braille displays using USB human interface device (HID) mode is being investigated by NV Access.

Re: Voices With NVDA Question Please.

The below message asks a very important question.  You have spoken of Narrator.  Does Narrator have the speech you want and is it the same speech you hear at the logon screen?  If you only hear it at the logon screen, it appears to be Cortana, based on the below message.

I don't have Windows 10 and I don't know what Cortana may be set to do.  But speech from digital assistants is much better than speech from screen-readers.  It is speech from the cloud and is much more powerful in the computing power that drives it and much more sophisticated than synthesizers on personal computers.

I suspect a lot of people would want such speech, if they could get it, for their screen[-readers.

But at this point, the most important question is, does Narrator use that speech in general when you are using it or do you hear it at the welcome screen and not when you use Narrator elsewhere?  You have spoken repeatedly of NVDA using one voice for a moment than changing to another voice.  NVDA never does this,  Whatever speech you are hearing isn't NVDA.

Hi

You can edit Narrator settings as follows:

Pres Windows+I to open settings dialog

Press tab once to enter list of Categories, then arrow down to “Ease of Access” and press enter

In the next dialog, press tab once to enter the list of sub-categories and arrow down to “Narrator” and press enter

Tab through the controls in this dialog box, you will find lots of Narrator settings including Voice, pitch and rate.  Change as required, then press alt+F4 to exit the dialog.

Hello everyone,

On behalf of the NVDA add-ons community, I’m delighted to announce the immediate release of Golden Cursor add-on version 5. Besides making the add-on compatible with NVDA 2021.1, it includes localization updates and the add-on code was modernized, including fixing potential bugs and issues with help from a linter, a tool for helping programmers locate coding issues.

As always, Golden Cursor 5 is available from community add-ons website and via Add-on Updater (if you haven’t already, please install Add-on Updater 21.07 or later).

IMPORTANT: Golden Cursor isn’t actively maintained by yours truly. I plan to release a localization update later this year, after which I’ll be asking the add-ons community to maintain this add-on further.

Problem while connected orbit reader with USB Hid Mode... with latest nvda version

Meet modi

Hello members,
I am faceing issue while connecting Orbit reader20  with USB hid mode.
I tried with two orbit devices and two different PCs but NVDA does not automatically detect orbit reader displays
I have one custom built PC and another from HP.
This two pcs cannot detect hid orbit mode with latest NVDA version 2021.1
I tried to change baum/HumanWare/APH/Orbit so it says:"Error! Couldnot load Baum display OK button"
Can any one test if they have an Orbit reader device.
I am looking for a proper solution.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Quentin for the In Process posts. I really enjoy reading them :) I'm actually pretty new to the list (have read through some archives though lol) and I hope it's okay to share a little testimony too since someone else also did, but in short, you guys are awesome and I'm really grateful for NVDA's existence. I use it on a daily basis and it has been my primary screen reader for the past 2 or 3 years. I had been exposed a bit to NVDA long before I started using it but I was strongly encouraged to try it by a vision teacher 2 or 3 years ago to expand my options and get exposure to alternate solutions, and I fell in love with NVDA very quickly because it felt very comfortable, responsive, and most importantly, it ticked all the boxes for a good screen reader for me. In addition, the command structure is quite similar to the (popular commercial) screen reader I was using before, which enabled me to get around the computer and feel comfortable with NVDA right from day one. Originally I was only planning to test NVDA for a short period of time, but I ended up loving it enough to not want to switch back to my other screen reader much anymore even though I had full access to it for quite a while. Now it's very hard for me to justify spending tons of money on a commercial solution when there's a free solution that serves me just as well.

Anyway, thanks for all the great work guys and I look forward to growing with you guys for years to come. :) I am still young so my contributional capacity is limited, but I definitely plan on donating in the near future and contributing to this list more, and maybe someday I may become more heavily involved in the accessibility field and NVDA would be a big part of that.

Hello,

Sorry for jumping in like that, in the middle of your discussion. If the language of the installed system is UK English, then the default voice might be Microsoft George. I can’t swear on it, because it’s been very long since I last installed Windows, but this might, just might be the end of the mystery. Hope this will help a little.

I’ve seenthe issue mentioned now and then.  I haven’t discussed it to any extent because I use Windows 7.  NVDA still supports Windows 7 but I didn’t know if it was a Windows 7 issue mostly.

There are times when this happens to me and I close NVDA from the system tray and run it again.  I haven’t tried control alt n.  That might start NVDA and solve the problem quite efficiently.
