That is what I have, and I really need this add-on, because I need my numpad to

I don’t know how the other person was able to install it!
Have a great one!

Sorry to stir the debate further but I think it's very unlikely that
the cortana voice is what you're hearing on the logon screen. The
cortana voice is female btw. The cortana voice, known as Microsoft
Eva, is restricted for Cortana. However, there is a registry patch you
can get online that you can run so Microsoft Eva is enabled under
SAPI5 voices for use with NVDA.

I don't have Windows 10 and I don't know what Cortana may be set to do.
But speech from digital assistants is much better than speech from
screen-readers.  It is speech from the cloud and is much more powerful

synthesizers on personal computers.

I suspect a lot of people would want such speech, if they could get it,
for their screen[-readers.

But at this point, the most important question is, does Narrator use
that speech in general when you are using it or do you hear it at the
welcome screen and not when you use Narrator elsewhere? You have spoken
repeatedly of NVDA using one voice for a moment than changing to another
voice.  NVDA never does this,  Whatever speech you are hearing isn't NVDA.

Hello,

On 2021.1, I will be working and the speech rate changes to the default rate of 9. I have been going to the desktop and then go to the speech preferences and set the rate to 24 or 25, which I like. It then works for a long time until it does this again.

Just a bug or any other thoughts? Using Microsoft core voices, because my Eloquence is not working yet.

More information is needed:
1. Windows version
2. The program(s) you are using when you are attempting to read the status bar (and specific versions given for each).

It is unclear to me whether you are actually using laptop keyboard layout or
just using a laptop.  If the latter, and it has a number pad as part of its
keyboard, NVDA could be set to be using desktop keyboard layout.  Take a
look at NVDA settings, specifically NVDA + N, P, S, then the keyboard pane
to see how things are set up.  I use desktop keyboard layout on all my
laptops because they have full-sized keyboards with number pads.

I was also one of those who held onto Winamp long after it was obvious that it would likely never return. I recently switched to VLC Media Player. This product also has similar keystrokes that are in Winamp and, in fact, are more intuitive and can also be configured. It has a dizzying array of options in its preferences dialog. After a short time of using the program I’m to the point where I wouldn’t switch back to Winamp even if development resumed.

Hi, does Foobar need an addon to run it? You say it works like winamp? If Winamp quits working that’s what I’ll switch to.

I switched to Foobar 2000 a couple of years ago.

You can customize hotkeys to act like what you were used to in Winamp,

if that suits you. It's very configurable.

Re: reading status bar with nvda

The keyboard shortcut for reading the status bar is:

Desktop Keyboard Layout:   NVDA + End

Laptop Keyboard Layout:  NVDA + Shift + End

It is unclear to me whether you are actually using laptop keyboard layout or just using a laptop.  If the latter, and it has a number pad as part of its keyboard, NVDA could be set to be using desktop keyboard layout.  Take a look at NVDA settings, specifically NVDA + N, P, S, then the keyboard pane to see how things are set up.  I use desktop keyboard layout on all my laptops because they have full-sized keyboards with number pads.

Re: NVDA find command not working

Janet Brandly

Hi Brian,

No, not harsh at all.

I am trying to use a medical transcription program called InScribe, version 7. Unfortunately, for anyone to help, they would have to have the software installed on their computer. I just thought I would ask just to see whether anyone had any general tips/tricks they might have found helpful in similar situations with other programs, not necessarily this specific program.

Thanks anyway,

Janet

Janet,

Several points, and none meant to sound as harsh as they may be taken to be:

1.  What is the "complicated transcription program"?  Generalities do not help.  Identifying software and version is essential as no one can divine what you're using nor know whether they've used it themselves.

2.  I presume this is medical transcription, and understand the privacy concerns.  But can you not replicate the issue when you create a "junk document" where you paste in completely non-private text from somewhere?  That would potentially allow someone to offer remote assistance or for you to share the screen.

There is no way, really, to assist based on the dearth of specific information.  Any potential assistant needs to know what program(s) are involved, or websites, etc.

reading status bar with nvda

mukesh jain

hello,
i would like to know that what is the keystroke to read the status bar
with nvda? for instance, when my focus is in the list view, whenever i
try to read status bar i press the keystroke insert+shift+end key as i
am using the laptop with window 10 nvda 2021. but pressing this
keystroke, nvda announces, no status line found. i had the same
difficulty with earlier versions of nvda. but i am able to read the
status bar with jaws by pressing insert+page down. so what could be
the reason for it?
looking forward for your valluable inputs.
thanks,
Mukesh

Hi,

The ability to let NVDA detect braille displays using USB human interface device (HID) mode is being investigated by NV Access.

Re: Voices With NVDA Question Please.

Gene

The below message asks a very important question.  You have spoken of Narrator.  Does Narrator have the speech you want and is it the same speech you hear at the logon screen?  If you only hear it at the logon screen, it appears to be Cortana, based on the below message.

I don't have Windows 10 and I don't know what Cortana may be set to do.  But speech from digital assistants is much better than speech from screen-readers.  It is speech from the cloud and is much more powerful in the computing power that drives it and much more sophisticated than synthesizers on personal computers.

I suspect a lot of people would want such speech, if they could get it, for their screen[-readers.

But at this point, the most important question is, does Narrator use that speech in general when you are using it or do you hear it at the welcome screen and not when you use Narrator elsewhere?  You have spoken repeatedly of NVDA using one voice for a moment than changing to another voice.  NVDA never does this,  Whatever speech you are hearing isn't NVDA.

As you mention what is spoken at the welcome screen, is this only when you boot up your machine and, if so, might this be Cortana?
