Re: No sound with NVDA 2020.1 in a Windows 10 VM
Dear Brian,
Is there no possibility to get one given version of Windows updated to the current one without having to re-install?
My belief was that when you are letting Windows download updates that' was precisely what was happening. Am I wrong here? Sorry, lack of familiarity with the Windows world. Will need to catchup.

Re: No sound with NVDA 2020.1 in a Windows 10 VM
Dear Lukasz,
Thanks again!
Regarding the updates I think we did them but I'll ask my sighted friends to check the sound menu itself.
I have patience so yes I will have the possibility to have sighted assistance. Probably not before next week but that's okay.
Will report progress here.
Many thanks, the thread has been really helpful so far!

Hi Ann, <snip Are you using the four-fingered JAWS keystroke or Excel bookmarks to set the titles? PL] I am using the NVDA's keystroke which is nvda key + shift +c for column titles. It is this keystroke which does nothing when read excel controls when using UIA is checked.

Re: object enhancer addon
Hi Rui
Under the general settings in nvda I tried the user default and
the english one.
I also restarted nvda. The version of NVDA is 2021.1.
I also tried other synths that spoke in english.
Wheather they were in us english or british english etc and still
the same results.
When you open the help section in the add on the first part is in
english but the instructions are in dutch under neath.
The first part says what it does but the instructions are in
dutch below.
I also checked under the voice settings and turned off any thing
to do with with automatic language switching and the one below it.
I also went back through my emails and checked for the latest
link and installed that one still same results.
Hince the earlier email saying what to do to bring it up in
english but people may not do it or may just read the english
documentation i put with the add on link to my drop box account.

The add on is in Dutch and if you do the following on the
installed version of NVDA you can have it in English.
Press the Windows key, then arrow to all apps, then NVDA,
then NVDA user configuration, then press the Enter key.
Locate the addons folder, then locate the object enhancer
folder, then press the Enter key.
Locate the Doc folder, there will be 2 folders inside of
it. Locate the Nl folder then copy the readme.html file.
Go back one step and locate the En folder and paste it in
there. It should override the other readme file. Now when
you bring up the help section in the addon, the first part
will be in Dutch and the rest will be English.
For a portable version do the following. If it is in the
NVDA folder, locate the user configuration folder, then
press the Enter key. Locate the add ons folder then press
the Enter key. Locate the object enhancer folder, then
press the Enter key. Locate the Doc folder, then press the

*Please note
If after that has been done and you hear NVDA speaking in
another language, use the NVDA key + Ctrl key + the letter
V. Next, tab down until you hear NVDA say Automatic
language switching (when supported) and uncheck that box.
Save your settings, then open the add on help section. The
first part will be in Dutch and the rest will be in
English.
If you do not want to do the above, there is an English
text file which you can read within the zip file.
To be
quite honest, we forgot that we had this add-on made. My
own boss asked me the other day to look into a
functionality to label objects in NVDA as they can do in
JAWS, turns out we already had something on the table :).
I'll give it some love where needed, since it would be
tremendously useful for our own work as well. If anyone
has a pull-request that it wants to push then I will look
into it.

Possible probably yes but not easy. If you have easy access to the sighted assistant that would be your best bed First versions of this build had exactly the issue you're describing under Virtual Box. I've reported this both to Oracle (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17942) and to Microsoft Accessibility team. It's nice that you did the reports! Thanks! I feel dumb for not having found them, actually!
I don't think they would come up in the searches - certainly the one to Microsoft has been done via twitter and using private messages. The latter report resulted in this issue being corrected with an update but unfortunately if you've installed from the image without the appropriate CU What do you mean by CU, exactly? I'm not familiar with the terminology, sorry.
CU -> Cumulative update integrated you need to fix it manually. To do so it is necessary to open your sound settings and ensure your sound card is set to Stereo rather than to 5.1 which the audio card emulated by Virtual Box fails to handle well. Just to make sure. When you talk about the sound settings, do you mean on the Windows side?
Yes, this change needs to be done on the system inside your VM.

Re: object enhancer addon
Hi
For a work around to use this add on I thought there would be a
few people that speak english that would like to try it but it
comes up in dutch when installed. I do not know what to do to make
it come up in English so done the below work around and or pointed
to the add on and english documentation in my drop box account.
If some one knows how to do it please do when it get installed it
comes up in English.
*Object enhancer add on for NVDA
Object Enhancer
• Author: Babbage B.V. info@...
Object Enhancer allows you to change how NVDA announces objects on
the screen using an intuitive interface. It can be used to change
the label of an object, but depending on how you’re using it, has
functionality to change basically any property of an object.
Changes to an object are saved in a definition. A definition
contains:
• Criteria that have to apply in order for the definition to match
• Attribute changes that will be applied to every object that
matches the definition
• Optional relationships with other definitions. A definition can
inherrit criteria from other
You can obtain a copy of it for NVDA 2021.1 from my drop box
account at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wld98w3bv5s2l9i/object%20enhancer.zip?dl=1
The add on is in Dutch and if you do the following on the
installed version of NVDA you can have it in English. Press the
Windows key, then arrow to all apps, then NVDA, then NVDA user
configuration, then press the Enter key. Locate the addons folder,
then locate the object enhancer folder, then press the Enter key.
Locate the Doc folder, there will be 2 folders inside of it.
Locate the Nl folder then copy the readme.html file. Go back one
step and locate the En folder and paste it in there. It should
override the other readme file. Now when you bring up the help
section in the addon, the first part will be in Dutch and the rest
will be English.
For a portable version do the following. If it is in the NVDA
folder, locate the user configuration folder, then press the Enter
key. Locate the add ons folder then press the Enter key. Locate
the object enhancer folder, then press the Enter key. Locate the
Doc folder, then press the Enter key. There will be 2 folders
inside of it. Locate the Nl folder, then press the Enter key and
copy the readme.html file. Go back one step and locate the En
folder and press the Enter key and paste it in there. It should
override the other readme file. Now when you bring up the help
section in the add on, the first part will be in Dutch and the
rest will be English.
*Please note
If after that has been done and you hear NVDA speaking in another
language, use the NVDA key + Ctrl key + the letter V. Next, tab
down until you hear NVDA say Automatic language switching (when
supported) and uncheck that box. Save your settings, then open the
add on help section. The first part will be in Dutch and the rest
will be in English.
If you do not want to do the above, there is an English text file
which you can read within the zip file.

To be quite honest, we forgot that we had this add-on made. My own
boss asked me the other day to look into a functionality to label
objects in NVDA as they can do in JAWS, turns out we already had
something on the table :).
I'll give it some love where needed, since it would be
tremendously useful for our own work as well. If anyone has a
pull-request that it wants to push then I will look into it.
Kind regards,
Falko

Re: No sound with NVDA 2020.1 in a Windows 10 VM
Thanks, Chris!
We did try espeach and didn't encounter more success. Regarding the output device, as far as I can remember, we had two choices: speakers or microsoft sound mappper or something like that. I can't say for sure that we tried all the combinations of synthesizers and outputs but those we tried didn't work. Also there is this strange things that the tunes NVDA makes when it starts and stops we couldn't hear either. To me this seems to indicate that the problem is wider than just a matter of which speech synthetizer is used, but I also suspect there may be several problems, and perhaps installing the latest version of NVDA will solve at least some of them.
Anyway, many thanks to all for your warm support, I deeply appreciate!
Sébastien.

Re: No sound with NVDA 2020.1 in a Windows 10 VM
Dear Brian,
No, I was not aware of the french speaking group, thanks!
That may indeed be helpful in some situations and in any case worth following!
For this discussion, though, it feels like the present group is a better place to have it, well I hope it doesn't annoy anybody.
Best wishes,
Sébastien.
