locked eloquence and nvda

Dear listers,

 

I’m using NVDA on a regular basis but I couldn’t switch full time to Nvda because I didn’t decide about the speech synthesizer yet. The windows sapi voices I don’t like it and also I don’t like the e-speak voice that comes with nvda, so my question is:

 

I am very happy with the eloquence speech that Jaws 2021 using, now can someone give me solid indication which version of eloquence isnear 100% the same as the jaws2021 eloquence, I know that there are two versions available from Codefactory the plugin eloquence and the Sapi version but when I tried them both my ears wasn’t sure which is the best eloquence and at the moment I’m very budget conscious before I spend money.

Try going into where you'd activate the license; when I had to update my Code Factory license upon updating the addon with 21.1, the edit field where I'd have to type in my license key, was filled already with this info. So I copied and pasted it for safekeeping in a "NotePad" file. Then when it came time (after updating NVDA, and the Code Factory addon), I just copied and pasted the info back into the edit field. Hi.


The issue with typing is probably due to the auto spell check functionality. You can turn it off in the pc settings app. Being laggy just in general could be caused by not having enough ram and meanwhile running from a hard drive instead of an ssd. Is that the case for your machine? More than 4gb is a good idea if the system has a standard hard drive. At 4gb it's easy to start needing the pagefile stored on disk to hold data that would otherwise fit on the ram if you had more, and the hard drive activity to handle the pagefile will cause it to be busy and not work well when you need to load programs from it and such.


Windows 10 is not quite as responsive as 7 anyway but it's not all that bad. What are the specs of your computer?

I changed to a different sappi 5 voice but every now and then the activation message still pops up.

It may be that the server is down.  All Code Factory voices contact the server at intervals, I believe about once a month.  If your Internet is down or their server is down, the voices won’t function because they can’t be verified as registered.  So one person’s voices may work and another person’s may not. 

 

I think this is a very bad system and, with good authorization systems, such as JAWS uses, this ongoing contact with the server is unnecessary. 

 

I would suggest contacting Code Factory before more troubleshooting on your machine.  If their server is working properly, you may have to do something.  If it is down, you may just have to wait until it is up again.

No, their server is down. I have the same problem and when I tried to input the code again it stated that there was a general error in reaching the server.

You will get a please register this product or some other message.  I’m nnot sure what you will hear.  Whatever you do to cause speech, arrowing, alt tabbing, anything, that is all you will hear.  However, you can open the synthesizer dialog, the one you open with control NVDA key s and even though you don’t have speech, you can select another synthesizer.  If you want to make sure of how you select the synthesizer you want in your NVDA with whatever choices you have, you can try this while you do have the speech you are currently using.  For example, you might try typing a letter or pressing home, then downarrowing until you get to the synthesizer you want.  To select it, you don’t have to tab, just press enter.  Remember the number of times you down arrow to get to it after you press home.

For what it's worth, my Dell Latitude E6510 with 4GB of ram performs respectably on Windows 10.  There is a slight lag, but some of that I attribute to the 5400 RPM hard drive.

8GB of RAM is adequate for the typical Windows 10 user.  While I’ve seen comments that performance is faster with 16GB, 8gb does not result in the kind of slowness described.  There are a lot of blind screen-reader users with 8GB of RAM, using Windows 10. 
 
It may be that the computer can run Windows 7 well, but that it doesn’t have the power to run Windows 10 well.

Ibrahim, there's a lot you don't tell us--specifically, how much ram
this machine has, how much free hard drive space, how many processors,
& their speed.

There is a Windows 10 compatibility tester that MS has. Did you run
this? If you have < 8gb of ram, then I suggest that Windows 10 is not
a good choice, especially when running adaptive technology. I would
also say that because this is an upgrade, there may be incompatible
apps or drivers.

It might be some kind of app running in the background that's slowing down your system, but it really shouldn’t' be Defender ora ny of the Microsoft programmes, which should work pretty smoothly together.
I have had big system slowdowns sometimes after a huge amount of disk activity, but it happens maybe once every few months or less and a restart always sets everything right.
The problem you are experiencing must be specific to your system.

It should.  If it happens to you like it happens to me you'll be unable to do anything at first because a please register message will irritatingly block everything you do, but once you reload NVDA it will use an alternative voice.

It may be that the server is down.  All Code Factory voices contact the server at intervals, I believe about once a month.  If your Internet is down or their server is down, the voices won’t function because they can’t be verified as registered.  So one person’s voices may work and another person’s may not. 

 

I think this is a very bad system and, with good authorization systems, such as JAWS uses, this ongoing contact with the server is unnecessary. 

 

I would suggest contacting Code Factory before more troubleshooting on your machine.  If their server is working properly, you may have to do something.  If it is down, you may just have to wait until it is up again.

Yeah so do I.

Its in a couple places, one of those is my hdd backups and a protected 128mb flash drive I only use for internal network storage keys.

When it dies I have a 1gb drive that will do the same.

I also have everything on my dropbox.

To login to my dropbox, I use everything through google.

I don't have 2step on this but I am thinking about buying an hardware authorisation dongle.
