MathPlayer broke NVDA and Firefox.

John Isige

So because I was posting about MathPlayer, somebody said they didn't want to install it because the last time they did and uninstalled it, it broke NVDA, it wouldn't "pick up" Chrome. Then somebody said you could use the Access Math addon without MathPlayer. I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and uninstall MathPlayer to see what happened, and try the addon.

Well, it indeed broke things. When Firefox comes up initially I get the normal read of the address bar, but whenever it loads a page I get "unknown", and silence with tabbing.

Please read carefully!

I have run the com registration tool. Twice. I have restarted. I have UAC turned off and it must have run with admin rights because it didn't ask for anything and said it finished.

My next idea is to generate a portable copy with all addons, uninstall, and then reinstall from the portable copy. But I'm not sure if that will work because I have no idea what's broken. anybody have a fix for this?

Re: How to update speech dictionary entries and configuration profiles on a portable version of NVDA?

Giles Turnbull

Hi Luke, and sory for the delay in replying to your question. Yes, you copy the default.dic file from appdata/roaming/NVDA/Speechdicts and you paste it into exactly the same location on your other device. Of course, there'll already be a default.dic file in there, but you can either overwrite that existing one or rename it to something like default_orig.dic ... NVDA will use the new default.dic file but you can revert back to the original one if you need. The new dictionary file will become active the next time you re-start NVDA.

Yes, it is a text file in as much as it can be opened and read in Notepad, but it is a .dic file. It is similar to a csv file (comma-separated values) format that worksheets from Excel can be exported as and read in Notepad ... in a CSV file the commas indicate a column boundary. In an NVDA .dic file it indicates the different options available in the speech dictionary dialogue ... pattern, replacement, comment, case sensitive etc.

Hope that helps,

Giles

Hi Pranav,

I have the same feeling about the slow running problem you mentioned, but I didn’t find a related issue. There is a more serious issue on github. I don't know if it also bothers you. However, NVAccess did not comment on this, and I hope more people will pay attention to these issues. https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/12108

Hi Luke,

I also use NVDA2021.1 and VS2019, enabled the UIA selective registration option in the advanced settings of NVDA, and turned on the tooltip of NVDA. The others seem to be nothing.

Cheers

Re: How to update speech dictionary entries and configuration profiles on a portable version of NVDA?

Luke,

If all you're trying to do is get the dictionary that exists on your installed version on to your portable version, it would be fine to just copy and paste the appropriate .DIC file  (or files) over.

That being said, if you're not sure about how to go about doing that it is a pretty simple issue to just make a new portable copy.

I was thinking you might have different add-ons in the installed and portable versions that you wanted to retain that way and/or a given dictionary file on one side that you wanted untouched while you wanted to merge the into the other.  Since these are not the case, the options become much clearer and easier, regardless of what you end up choosing to do.

But your having mentioned configuration profiles is also something that made me think that creating a fresh portable copy if what's wanted is a portable "edition" of what you have in place with your installed version would likely be the preferable option.

About NVDA reading the entire line when navigating IntelliSense menus… And not to hijack the original topic of the thread, but since you said it had been fixed, I’m curious about that. I’m running Visual Studio 2019 and the latest version of NVDA and it’s still not working correctly for me. Is there something else I need to do? Thank you so much!

Could I add a link from your website  to mine which is called Accessibilitycentral.net

It has nvda tutorials along with other blindness related material if you want to check it out.

I want to have it so people can find your website a lot easier as well. It would most probably go onto the nvda add-ons page where there are tutorials etc on how to install a add on etc  as well.

I do like the idea of having addons from around the world all in the one place as you have done it.

Been a English speaker is it possible for some of the add on developers that have there add-ons in another language hopefully have them translated into English also so we can use them as well.

Dear NVDA users across the world,

I'm pleased to announce to you the availability of the final version of
NVDA-addons.org, the first website created to serve as an international
directory for both official and unofficial NVDA add-ons.

Indeed, this project aims to gather the download links of all possible
add-ons, within logical standards of usability. You won't have to search
in Google anymore to, at the end, find an outdated version uploaded to
Dropbox, or ask through your preferred mailing list until someone is
able to rescue and send you as an attachment that add-on that is
distributed from mailbox to mailbox for years. In NVDA_addons.org, your
favourite add-on may be hosted by Dropbox, but we, both users and
administrators, will make our best to guarantee you its most updated
release. Moreover, you'll be able to know before downloading any add-on
its exact compatibility range and development status.

The platform has been self-developed by us and has the following features:

  * Table of add-ons on the home page: As simple as typing
NVDA-addons.org in your preferred web browser. Last updated add-ons
are shown at the top and official add-ons, those published at
    add-ons.nvda-project.org, are flagged as "verified".
  * Filters: You can filter add-on table by add-on's name, summary,
release channel, minimum NVDA version and last tested NVDA version.
  * Paginator: Browse the add-on table 50 by 50.
  * Dedicated page for each add-on: See its author, website, description
and available downloads, with supported NVDA version range for each
    of them.
  * Direct download both from home page and add-on page.
  * Supported by advancedAddonFiles: The directory already contains all
the add-ons added to the Spanish-speaking NVDA Community website,
NVDA.es. This is because NVDA-addons.org is only an interface for
advancedAddonFiles, the application that manages add-on additions
    and updates.
  * Automatic translator in all pages, powered by Google.
  * top 10 downloaded add-ons: All pages include a widget showing the 10
most downloaded add-on releases along with their last tested NVDA
    version.
  * Newsletter: With our newsletter, you'll get a digest of updated and
added add-ons each week, and also special notices and information
about review requests. Subscribe by sending a blank message to
news+subscribe@.... This is also displayed as a widget
    in all pages.
  * Donate: We'd prefer not to ask for donations, but the
Spanish-speaking NVDA Community Association, stablished in Spain as
a legal nonprofit, survives thanks to them. Maintaining
NVDA-addons.org is only one of our initiatives. You can donate
through PayPal, credit/debit card and GitHub Sponsors, using the
widget at the bottom of each page.
  * Direct contact: We are human and willing to help. Send us your
thoughts, questions and suggestions to admin@....

How can you collaborate?

 1. Adding new add-ons: You can submit a review request for one add-on
that is not registered. It doesn't matter if you are its author or
not. Once we've verified it doesn't contain spam, it'll be published
to receive public comments regarding add-on usability and security.
In absence of them, or after they've been resolved, the add-on will
be added to the database. If you've specified your email, you'll be
given direct access to update that add-on. You can also submit a
review request for already registered add-ons to discuss usability
    or security issues.
 2. Letting us know of add-on updates: If you find an outdated add-on in
our database, don't hesitate to reach us at admin@...
with all the information you have about the new version. We'll happy
to publish that new version, provieded that it's from the same
author or we have reasonable evidences of abandonment from that
maintainer and a new one continues the development.

What happens if you have an interested friend who doesn't know English?
That's, in fact, the idea behind the translate widget. Just choose your
native language and enjoy. We know that no translation can match a human
translation, but this is our easiest and simplest solution to have
NVDA-addons.org internationalized. If you want to export our catalog to
your local NVDA website, don't forget that it's available in JSON format
at https://nvda-addons.org/files/get.php?addonslist

On the other hand, don't worry to write us a message in another
language. We'll make our best to reply you.

What is coming next? We're now announcing the first version of the
website but can't wait to think about the future. Héctor Benítez has
developed an add-ons store prototype for NVDA-addons.org, which will be
enhanced until it gets to a stable version that we all can use to review
the catalog and download the add-ons we want from NVDA directly. You can
download the prototype, in spanish, from:
https://nvda-addons.org/files/get.php?file=tienda

I really hope this new tool is useful for you and every NVDA user you
know. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards.
