That is just one of the many working bugs both screen readers have, and either haven't gotten to or just won't fix. i would give better odds it being more workable with NVDA.

It's also quite possible for someone who can't see to use actual drag and drop when the direction of movement is constrained (e.g., moving something left or right in Quick Launch icons) with a bit of practice.  But it is impractical when you have no idea of where, exactly, "the drop zone" might have appeared on the screen.  Grabbing for the drag with a mouse or mouse pad is dirt simple once you have focus on the thing you want to drag, but locating the drop zone is generally very difficult to impossible.  Even then, there are certain exceptions, but those are a case-by-case sort of thing.

Both NVDA and JFW have this ability.

However, it depends on the windows your moving to, because it don't work everywhere. That is why its hardly used.

Its mostly a pipe dream, but when it does work great. They had that for over twenty years in JFW and still only half works never was it dependable.

Hi, I think i saw this question posted elsewhere. I recall seeing this addon that may help ages ago. https://github.com/javidominguez/DragAndDrop/releases/

Otherwise, drag and drop isn't really something done by those who are blind and is thus replaced with other keyboard commands, and it depends on what app you use.

Thanks Gene.
That could be awkward. I use this to check if keys I'd like to map add-ons to is free. I didn't realise it was context sensitive.

Re: Is it possible to drag-and-drop with NVDA and the keyboard

Khalid,

Yes, it's possible to use emulated drag and drop with NVDA (and JAWS).  See the NVDA Keyboard Quick Commands, Navigating with the Mouse section, for a discussion of using left mouse lock followed by routing commands for drag and drop.

There are very few apps that do not allow you to upload a file rather than drag and drop.  When the dialog is up, I would take some extra time to explore it to see if there is not an option for uploading the file which would use a typical Windows Open dialog to navigate to the file you want to upload.

Unfortunately, without a specific URL for the app, the terms file, stream, and even filestream as one word return too many results to sift through.  I can't locate documentation for this app.

Re: issue with 2021-2 rc1

Quentin Christensen

Also to add to what others have said, if you file an issue (which I'd encourage) but even if you don't, it's hard to investigate without some steps to replicate.  The issue template has a list of questions to prompt you to think about the information required - but basically, what software (and versions) are you using on your computer?  What NVDA add-ons are you using (and if you restart NVDA with add-ons disabled does it still happen), and if you turn my computer on, and ensure NVDA is running, and I'm using the same add-ons, what specific keys can you press to replicate the issue.  With that information, I (or someone else), can try exactly the same things and see if it happens.  If it does, then I can produce a log and experiment and try to work out what is going on.  If I can't, then what might be unique about your system - and in that case, a log (at debug level) might help us ascertain what is going on and what is different about your system.

(That was all meant to be a general run-through of why we ask for that info - if you need any help on specifics, do please refer to the information Brian provided in his reply, and if you still get stuck, let us know :))

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Speech being interrupted when I pan to the next line on braille display

Quentin Christensen

In NVDA's keyboard settings (Press NVDA+control+k to open those directly) there is an option to "Allow skim reading in Say All".

If on, certain navigation commands (such as quick navigation in browse mode or moving by line or paragraph) do not stop Say All, rather Say All jumps to the new position and continues reading.

That sounds like it might be what you are after.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Re: Nvda beta - eloquence and vocalizer add on

Quentin Christensen

The only time it won't work is if the new release is a compatibility breaking release, like NVDA 2021.1 was.  We don't do such a release every year, but if we do, it will be the first release of the year.  Most importantly, if we do, we'll be sure to publicise it well in advance, as we have done previously - both here in the group, on our social media (Twitter and Facebook) and in our In-Process blog: https://www.nvaccess.org/category/in-process/

If you do attempt to install a new version which is incompatible with your existing add-ons, it will warn you of this and which add-ons are incompatible, before you update, and at that point you can decide to continue and disable those add-ons, or cancel and not go ahead with the update.  Another option, is to create a portable version.  A portable version lets you separate, as you suggested - your two versions of NVDA so you can keep using older add-ons if needed until they are updated to work with a new version of NVDA.  There are a couple of caveats to using a portable copy, such as not being able to run it on the logon screen, and these are outlined in the user guide: https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html#PortableAndTemporaryCopyRestrictions

Kind regards

Quentin.

During the beta cycle of a new nvda release, can the eloquence and vocalizer addon be used?

If not, is there a way, to separat the: stable release to the: beta release? So that it doesn't mess up the licensing system of the add-on.

I think it's more useful to copy the last spoken of NVDA, and hope that NVDA itself can have such a function.

Hey Konnie

The link was in my email, but it’s exactly the same as yours. You could try removing it from the Tools/Manage add-ons section and re-installing a fresh copy.

The nice thing about Silenzio is that it will keep your Bluetooth headset alive, even when you’re not running NVDA. This is great if you need to use Narrator etc.

Best of luck!
