I had some weirdness w/the update too this morning. It said a file was
already being used, thus, the update couldn't install. So I just
downloaded & installed manually.

Fill in the YYYY field with the year, like 2021.1 for example. You'll
be able to download anything back to 2013.1.

I hope that is helpful.

Changing the Microsoft API speech voice to eliminate the "and in reading numbers

Nancy Shackelford

When reading numbers with the Microsoft API speech synthisizer, it
reads sunbers with the word "and" in numbers such as 10,200. How can
I get it not to say this in these number readings?
Thanks,

Re: NVDA 2021.2 is now available

Dennis Clark

Thanks Rui.

I'll give it a shot, though I think I know what may be wrong, so I will try to fix the problem with my computer then try 2021.2 again. I did notice that 2021.2 did fix what I viewed as a problem.

After doing a Google search then clicking on and item in the search results, then alt left-arrowing back to the search results, I was placed back at the top of the search list instead of the link I originally clicked on. I'm confident that in earlier versions of NVDA this was not the case, and this morning I did see that this now works again, which is a major convenience.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Numpad Nav Mode addon question

Hi Ben thank you very much. I'll try updating NVDA and reinstall this addon. I checked out thd this site before I posted the question, but couldn't see info on whether it works with the newest version of NVDA.
Appreciate your help.

Udit,

Not that I am aware of.   Are you trying to get NVDA to pronounce your name correctly?   If so, it would probably be easier to do that by playing with the default dictionary, or, if you use various voices that "screw up" your name differently, the respective voice dictionaries, to get a substitution string used that actually gets pronounced correctly.

I'm doing a SWAG here, but you could have it say Udit as something like You dit or You deet or Ooh dit or Ooh deet.  I've had to play with all sorts of tricks to get various synths to pronounce names correctly.

Thanks Gene, I thought that might work. I didn't have time to respond before my meeting this morning. For a quick fix to get me up and running this morning, I switched to a different computer with NVDA 2021.1 which worked fine. Fortunately I recently moved all my business files and software to Dropbox and Github so switching in a different computer wasn't a problem.

Hope to talk with you soon.

I don’t think it will automatically update, but it will probably ask if you want to at some point.  To be completely sure it won’t happen, however, you can stop that from happening by disconnecting from the Internet before installing the program and then setting the program not to update before reconnecting.  In the general categatory in preferences, if you tab around, you will find a check box to uncheck to stop automatic checking for updates.  Evidently, if the check box is checked, you will be asked if you want to update when the program runs and unchecking it will avoid that annoyance.

While you are waiting to get the earlier version, you may want to uninstall and reinstall the current version.  Something may have gone wrong with the installation and reinstalling the program may solve the problem.

Subject: Re: [nvda] NVDA 2021.2 is now available

Hello Rui,

Unfortunately I have a very long day ahead of me with 2 important calls
scheduled concerning 2 websites hosted on different cloud servers. We're
trying to sort out a couple of issues with BuddyBoss and LearnDash, and
my computer can no longer even read the names of files I am creating or
renaming. As such the most efficient solution for me will be to
reinstall 2021.1 which was working pretty well for me. My concern even
if I can find 2021.1 is that when I try to install it, that it will
first check and discover a newer version 2021.2 is available and will
install 2021.2 instead of 2021.1.

I now have 1 hour and 10 minutes before my first scheduled call and my
computer for all practical purposes is down.

Thanks for your interest.

Is Acquia Dev Desktop accessible with NVDA?

Amelia Anne Dickerson

I am very much a beginner with website development, but I’m going through a LinkedInLearning video on Drupal 9 where they used Acquia to teach Drupal 9. I found 1 result in several Google searches that said it wasn’t accessible with JAWS, but that was all the way back in 2017, so I’m looking for more up to date info as to whether anyone has used it more recently. If you aren’t using Acquia, can you tell me a more accessible way to host a website through Drupal 9?

I’ve used NVDA for several years now, so I’d say I have moderate skill level with NVDA.

I’m doing this to become more competent at working with our website that will probably transition to Drupal in the next couple months 9 at  work, and since I’m doing this just to train myself, a free hosting option would be great. In other words, I’m just creating a website to play around with everything they teach in the video, not truly one to publish.

Like I said, I’m a beginner at websites like this, so I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks.

Warm Regards,

Amelia Dickerson

Interesting. I like a slightly lower pitch value. That does get things a little closer to sounding like Eloquence though. (grin)

Well I did some experimenting with NVDA 2021.2 since its Espeak has been updated. I found if I set the voice to English American, the variant to Edward, raise the pitch to around 70, lower the inflection from 75, default, down to 30 or 40, Espeak for me is much more pleasant to listen to. And it is much more understandable at least for me.

Hi,

Window-Eyes had a feature where you could adjust any speech parameters for the keyboard, mouse, and reading voices separately. I loved that feature and really miss it in NVDA.

Hi Curtis,

Late replying, but it doesn't look like anyone has.  I don't specifically have an answer for you, but the main thing I'd suggest is adding the request as an issue on our issue tracker: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues - I'm not sure if anyone else has requested it before, but if they have that's where it should be as well.

Kind regards

Re: NVDA 2021.2 is now available

And, as a side note (and too late to be directly pertinent here), it's always worth trying uninstalling and reinstalling the current version when things like this occur.

It's not unheard of for corruptions to occur, regardless of the software, during updates.  It's not common, but it's not unheard of, either.  Doing a quick uninstall and reinstall when others are not reporting the same difficulties you are having is worth a try, and usually takes just a few minutes.

If that doesn't fix the issue(s), then reverting to the last known good version makes sense.

We're still back at the place, though, where if you (the generic you) are having issues not being widely reported it is most likely something idiosyncratic to your specific system that needs to be addressed, even if you do revert and the older version works since you can't remain reverted "forever."

Welcome to the NVDA Community Add-ons website - Columns Review #nvdaaddonsfeed

nvda@nvda.groups.io Integration <nvda@...>

Columns Review

Columns Review is an add-on to enhance NVDA experience with lists.

Its features include:

  • customizable actions on column header and/or content (available actions are read, copy, spell and show in browse mode);
  • ability to cycle between columns in ten-by-ten intervals;
  • simplified header management (mouse clicks);
  • on-demand reading of relative current item position (i.e.: item 7 of 10);
  • customizable gestures with or without numpad;
  • "0 items" announcement when list is empty (not working in Win8/10 folders, unfortunately);
  • say all support;
  • report of selected items (amount and item names);
  • list search (with item multiselection, if checked/supported).

Gestures

Default keys for columns, headers and position are NVDA+control, but you can customize them from add-on settings (not "Input gestures" dialog!).

Note that your keyboard could have problems processing some key combinations, so try all add-on gestures and adjust them for better results.

See also add-on preferences for numpad mode, keyboard layout (without numpad), and the four available actions for columns.

  • NVDA+control+digits from 1 to 0 (keyboard mode) or from 1 to 9 (numpad mode): by default, read the chosen column if pressed once, copy it if pressed twice;
  • NVDA+control+numpadMinus (numpad mode): like NVDA+control+0 in keyboard mode, read or copy the 10th, 20th, etc column;
  • NVDA+control+- (keyboard mode, EN-US layout): in a list with 10+ columns, change interval and process columns from 11 to 20, from 21 to 30, and so on (change last char according to your layout, from settings);
  • NVDA+control+numpadPlus (numpad mode): like previous command;
  • NVDA+control+enter (numpadEnter in numpad mode): open header manager;
  • NVDA+control+delete (numpadDelete in numpad mode): read relative current item position (i.e.: item 7 of 10);
  • Arrows and NVDA+tab (in empty list): repeat "0 items" message;
  • NVDA+downArrow (desktop layout) or NVDA+a (laptop layout): start say all (this gesture depends on original one under "Input gestures"/"System caret");
  • NVDA+shift+upArrow (desktop layout) or NVDA+shift+s (laptop layout): report amount and names of current selected list items (like previous command for customization);
  • NVDA+control+f: open find dialog (not customizable);
  • NVDA+f3: find next occurrence of previously entered text (not customizable);
  • NVDA+shift+f3: find previous occurrence (not customizable).

Support

This add-on provide a general support for more common lists (see below), and some specific applications. Main author (Alberto Buffolino) cannot guarantee compatibility/functionality for those applications he not uses, like Outlook and Windows Mail, but he'll be happy to collaborate with their users or accept a pull request for them.

Lists supported are:

  • SysListView32;
  • DirectUIHWND (present in 64-bit systems);
  • WindowsForms10.SysListView32.* (applications that use .NET);
  • multi-column treeview like as that presents in RSSOwlnix;
  • Mozilla table (tipically, Thunderbird message list, thread-grouping supported).

Hello Dennis,

Here is what you do: Type the following into your address bar:

nvaccess.org/download/nvda/releases/YYYY.N/nvda_YYYY.N.exe

Fill in the YYYY field with the year, like 2021.1 for example. You'll be able to download anything back to 2013.1.

I hope that is helpful.

Sincerely,

Brandon J. Peters

You may have found the download page already.  If not, I just found it and here is the link:

That’s very odd.  Someone can tell you how to find the prior version, I don’t have a link for it.

N

o, you can use the NVDA 2021.1 installer.

After installation configure it to do not verify updates automatically...
