You have this entirely backwards.  Once an emulator is on Windows it is within the emulator that you "get" any applications relevant to that ecosystem.

There has just been a discussion today regarding the fact that emulators are "walled gardens" that, while they run under a given operating system, are worlds of their own.  You work within them, not jumping across that wall.

I do not know whether there are any users of specific Android Emulators either on the Blind Android Users Group or Android Accessibility Group, but those would be better places to ask about TalkBack (or, more accurately, Android Accessibility Suite) in emulated Android environments.

NVDA does not work under Android, and as soon as you are inside an emulator you are effectively in Android and only have access to things that run under Android.

Yes. Drifting a bit off topic but, emulation is a pretty fascinating idea. My ex used to run video game system emulators on one of our pCs and a few years ago I got an emulator running on windows that perfectly simulated my first computer, an Apple II E. They even perfectly replicated through software the circuitry of the old Echo speech hardware synth.

 

But yeah, first rule of emulation is: emulator will only run what’s native to the things it is supposed to be emulating…and not always even those things, since there can sometimes be unexpected glitches in emulation, as you might expect.

Hello Listers,

 

I am seeking assistance for our church’s publication staff, as they are interested in making their Adobe and Word documents accessible with NVDA, yet I haven’t the knowledge on how to help.

 

I am needing to fill out my own quarterly reports for our Missionary Department, and the Ministers Report is one my husband will be needing to fill out as Evangelism Coordinator.

 

I have sent the publishing representative, Mr. Kryss Barick, the document the NFB uses in its Accessible Boutique for document creation.

 

I have also sent him suggested links from Vispero on creating screen reader accessible documents.

 

He did download NVDA, but  is running into snags, and I am not sure how to help him out.

 

He has given me permission to forward his responses to me, and I will do the same with any replies.

 

He has a lot on his plate, so I am offering to assist in passing on any responses related to my query.

 

I am also attaching the original adobe report that is currently on their web site.  The goal is to get all report forms up on site, and the ministers report is one of the first.

 

Thank you in advance for solutions to help make accessible documents, or the best solution for him.

Well, sister, I thought I was making progress until I downloaded the screen-reader. I did my best to follow the instructions to create a pdf that will allow a screen reader to capture the pertinent text with the information you sent yesterday. I added in depth labeling to the tool tip section of each field. After I turned on my Windows Narrator, and it read out each section when I tabbed through as I expected it to with the file when I opened it, but when I installed NVDA this morning, it only gave me the file name and nothing else. It may only be user error, at least I hope so.

 

 

I am working with the Minister's Monthly Report, since it will be the first one that needs this treatment. I appreciate you working with me on this. Hopefully we can get it figured out and get to work on everything else from there. I do think that these reports are going to be the most difficult and, therefore, the best to start with. Everything else should be easy after this.

 

I have attached my most recent iteration of this file for you to check out and see if we are making any progress. Please let me know what you find.

This morning I received the document used in the Creating Accessible Documents webinar, see attached.

 

There is also a free and open-source screen reader you can try, called NVDA.  It was primarily developed for blind people in third-world countries who cannot afford to buy software, but has caught on worldwide.

When using a screen reader, key strokes and combinations are used to navigate the computer, not the mouse.

In addition to what you said here, I’d just like to iterate that for sure, no android emulator will run NVDA. The whole point of an emulater is that it  uses your system to mirror a completely differetn system in as close a way as possible. Thus, the Android emulator will only run Android programmes; not Windows ones. You will need to start thinking of the emulation as a completely separate environment from your windows system, even if it is running on your windows box.

OK, oops. Turns out the issue with keyboard shortcuts was user error. Zoom or one of its meeting windows must have focus for those shortcuts to work. The first part of my previous message about the add on not addressing my original issue still stands, so I welcome any additional ideas on that piece. Thanks again folks.

Update on this. I installed the Zoom Enhancements plugin and it doesn't address the specific challenge I'm experiencing. It seems to basically wrap keyboard shortcuts around the same accessibility settings already available in the Zoom app. My problem is that the alerts from Zoom are too agressive, meaning they are spoken even when Zoom doesn't have focus. They are clearly coded as ARIA alerts which should only be used for user-critical notifications, not routine screen reader feedback. Perhaps this is more a feature request I should place with Zoom, if that's even possible.
Additionally, the keyboard shortcuts for the app don't even work as stated on the add on page for it. Pressing shift + NVDA + A is supposed to cycle through the Zoom announcement modes but just speaks a capital "A" when I press it. The control + NVDA + number keys to toggle individual alerts don't work either. Nothing happens when I use these keyboard shortcuts. I've restarted NVDA and tried reloading plugins but no luck. I see the settings page for Zoom Enhancements in NVDA settings so I know the add on installed correctly.

Using NVDA with Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Greetings,

I have a couple problems when using MS RDP with NVDA as described below.

Sometimes when I use MS RDP to access another Windows computer from my local Windows computer the audio from the remote computer is much lower than the local computer audio.

For example, I was using a local Windows 10 computer to RDP to a remote Windows 8 computer and I can hardly hear NVDA output from the remote computer, however, the local computer NVDA output is easy to hear.

I am not using NVDA remote, I'm running NVDA on both computers and using the audio from RDP.

The volume on the remote computer is set to 100%.

The sound mixer on the local computer does not include a selector for RDP.
All the selectors are at the same level.

If I go to the remote computer and disconnect from RDP the NVDA audio follows the volume control on that computer.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.


When I use MS RDP to access a remote computer and try to update NVDA on the remote computer the update fails with a file in use error.

The error reports something like the file is in use by another user and allows you to retry, however, the only way I know to resolve this problem is to go to the remote computer  and access it directly and complete the update.
A screen shot of the error dialog box is attached for reference.

Many years ago this did not happen.
When I first ran into this problem I reported it.
It has never been resolved since.

It is not always easy to go to the remote computer to do the NVDA update.

If there is a better way to do this please let me know.

I wouldn’t have commented, but you asked if anyone wants to bet.  I don’t think the viewpane is involved.  This sounds like something that opens when you hover over a message with the mouse but in this case, simply selecting it by moving to it causes it to open.  I have never seen a view pane function as described.  And note that the text of the message isn’t shown, only information about the message.  I have never seen focus automatically moved to a view pane either.  I have to move to it.

 

the problem may not exist any longer, as to the last message from the person who asked the question.  But if it returns, I think the answer is to try to find information about a feature that shows message information when hovered over or perhaps selected.

I have asked about this on a tech geek group, and so far no one can match the description to a behavior they've encountered.

My quick and dirty suggestion for a possible workaround that doesn't involve restarting Outlook is hitting the Escape key when that pop-up pops up.  This virtually always dismisses them, and leaves focus wherever you happened to be prior.

I have Windows 10 and Office 365 on my PC. A recent update must’ve changed things, because now when I arrow through my list of emails, if I stop on one item for more than a second or two, it pops up some other kind of window about replying etc., and I can’t get back to the list.

The only way I’ve found to get back to the email list is to close Outlook completely and reopen.

This isn’t a huge annoyance, now that I’ve learned I need to be quick when looking at the emails in a folder, but it would be nice if I could set things back the way they used to be.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
