Update Checking Error for NVDA and Add-On Updater - Root Cause Identified, Workaround Given, Problem solved in 2021.3 #adminnotice

You know, I have said before, that members of groups such as this have an obligation to be proactive and actually pay attention to the titles of the traffic coming through at the very least.

There is (or was, if you applied the workaround) an issue with getting NVDA to update or Add-On Updater to fetch updates on a selected, but large, subset of machines that was directly linked to a couple of factors, very clearly identified by Joseph Lee in this message:  https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/message/88179 sent yesterday.

Shortly before that, he gave a workaround in this message: https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/message/88175

This issue is resolved.  Everyone who is a regular here (and that's many who are still commenting) should know it's resolved, and how to resolve it, if you review group messages, in topics dedicated to this very issue, before posting about it again.

Please, please, start doing that.  Questions about this cannot and will not be allowed to go on for days when the answers have already been provided for those that need them now, and it's been clearly stated that the underlying issue will be corrected as of NVDA 2021.3.

Hi all,

First, thank you for reporting add-on update error messages. The issue was traced to NVDA not looking for the correct SSL error, possibly caused by expired root certificate from Let’s Encrypt. As a result, Add-on Updater 21.10 was just released (manual download for now):

https://github.com/josephsl/addonUpdater/releases/download/21.10/addonUpdater-21.10.nvda-addon

IMPORTANT: Add-on Updater 21.10 is a MANDATORY update to anyone using NVDA 2021.1 or later. I cannot backport this to earlier NVDA releases as the add-on uses features introduced in NVDA 2021.1.

In addition to fixing SSL certificate verification error, Add-on Updater 21.10 makes it possible to check for add-on updates after you perform a clean Windows installation without connecting to the Internet and then go online afterwards. This change comes from upcoming NVDA 2021.3 (alpha snapshots at the moment).

I advise applying this update as soon as possible – for now after installing Add-on Updater 21.10, ignore an offer from Add-on Updater to install Add-on Updater 21.09 – I will update this thread once Add-on Updater 21.10 is indeed offered.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi guys

I have been asked the following question about how well nvda works with

Microsoft teams. I do not use it so can not comment.

Are there others on the list who do and how well does it work with it.

I did not see a add on for it so is one not required? unless I missed it

on the website. I see there is one for zoom.

I note there is a lot of shortcuts you can use with it so I guess nvda

any bugs to look out while using it or is it pretty good.

I'll check later I guess.

Hello,

rather forcing blank to be changed in pronunciation using a regular expression dictionary entry might be useful.

^ is the beginning of line in regular expressions.

$ is the end of line in regular expressions.

* in regular expressions means 0 or more of the previous character or pattern

So:

^ *$

should match a line with just spaces in it.  ( note there is a space between the ^ and the * , also note you might want to turn on all punctuation to read my descriptions above, I can't be sure on this computer how much of NVDA reads of the above special characters.

Do you need to read moving line by line or can you read whatever you are reading using read to end.  If you use read to end, blank lines aren’t spoken.

I'm just getting started using NVDA at home and at work. About the only issue I'm having so far is that, on my work computer, when I'm arrowing down a document, either in Outlook 2016, Word, or in a web application that uses Firefox or chrome, I can't get NVDA 2021-2 to stop saying "blank" whenever I encounter a blank line. I have punctuation and symbols  set to none, and NVDA is set not to echo typed characters. Strangely, this isn't happening on my home computer using Office 2019 programs and, as far as I know, I have NVDA configured the same way.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Re: Add-on Updater 21.10 (mandatory update) released #addonrelease

I don’t know if there is anything to do but use Firefox for sites you can’t open in Chrome-based browsers.  If your Windows is up-to-date with all updates available before support ended, there may be nothing else that can be done.

Chrome-based browsers and browsers in general rely on Windows itself for verification that sites are ;properly certified.  Firefox has its own certificates and is unusual among browsers.

Re: Add-on Updater 21.10 (mandatory update) released #addonrelease

Hi,

Firefox works because it comes with its own set of security certificates and doesn't rely on Windows to provide such information (the ultimate cause is Windows not being aware of expired certificate, and NVDA is involved because it fails to check the actual error in question). As for relationship with Windows 7, it was established (from some reports) that this is occurring across Windows releases (I do know that some folks will advise you to upgrade to Windows 10, but it is not for me to advise this as part of this thread).

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Add-on Updater 21.10 (mandatory update) released #addonrelease

Hi,

I see. The next step then is a debug log from people experiencing it (ideally attached as part of a GitHub issue comment, but since not everyone has a GitHub account...).

Can people try doing a data analysis based on information we get from users - NVDA versions in use, debug log analysis, etc.?

Cheers,

Joseph

I find the discussion of blank lines in browsers puzzling.  When I am in browse mode, NVDA never stops at or indicates a blank line.  I’m puzzled as to why arrowing through a web page or another document such as a PDF in browse mode may cause some users to come across blank lines.

Subject: [nvda] Microsoft teams with nvda

Hi guys

I have been asked the following question about how well nvda works with Microsoft teams. I do not use it so can not comment.

Are there others on the list who do and how well does it work with it.

I did not see a add on for it so is one not required? unless I missed it
on the website. I see there is one for zoom.

I note there is a lot of shortcuts you can use with it so I guess nvda
will work with it.

any bugs to look out while using it or is it pretty good.

I did come across this link and teams at

Any help would be good to feed back.

The dialog box says Error checking for updates and there is a OK button

Hi,
I see. If so, what is the exactly message you hear? If it says "no update available", then you are fine as 2021.2 is the latest release.
Cheers,

Re: How do I Stop NVDA from saying Blank when I arrow down in a document or email

I don’t know what accounts for the difference.  While others may know of another solution, you can use the speech dictionary so the word blank is never spoken.  But you may not want to do that in case you want to hear it spoken in certain contexts.

Thanks for the help.
