Re: Windows 11 system tray: use grouped icons

Oh, it does? You’d probably read it differently then windows. For example you can either do incert f 11 or windows B. I use windows b all the time. With NVDA you have to use windows B not insert f 11 With other screen readers such as Jaws and others you can use insert f 11.

Hello all,
I have read that with Windows 11 it is no longer possible to display all icons in the system tray. I guess the icons are only shown grouped and only expanded as soon as you move the mouse over them.
Are the grouped icons still usable with NVDA?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

The first thing I would want to know is where you read this. I have no
opinion about whether it is correct, but I’m very careful about what sources I
trust information from in cases like this.

Re: Does NVDA speak Arabic?
Shawn
I don’t speak Arabic, I’ve learned a handful of words from watching vids, but if I want to look at Arabic text, i.e. videos on Youtube or song titles, I prefer Persian. Espeak’s Arabic sounds awful and incomprehensible. Some of ESpeak’s languages aren’t too bad, but IMHO it’s Arabic is atrocious, and Hawaiian was a big distorted disappointment. E-Speak supports Arabic, but I’m not sure to what extent. Wikipedia says, “Currently, only fully diacritized Arabic is supported.” Since I don’t know how Arabic is written, I don’t know what sort of limitation that imposes.
A lot of people don’t like E-Speak but it is something you may want to try.

Re: Does NVDA speak Arabic?
Ann,
Not being a speaker of Arabic, I have no idea how much dialectal differences may matter, but two of the Microsoft One Core voices, Egyptian Arabic and Saudi Arabian Arabic, that are free under Windows 10 do have text-to-speech capability. The other Arabic dialects do not. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all. ~ John F. Kennedy

Re: remote
Chris Mullins
Hi Thanks for sharing this information with the NVDA community. NVDA Remote is an excellent resource but since V2.4, I have had connectivity issues with it using nvdaremote.com but I didn’t know about these alternative servers. Regarding the narrative about latency and distance between the connected computers on the nvra.io site, nvdaremote.com could still be the shortest route for some users but it’s location is not specified. Could this be added to the site?
Cheers Chris

Hey Robert,

It's actually not that hard to do, if you have the technical knowhow and can forward a port on your router or Windows Firewall. The server implementation I recommend and which works extremely well for me, both Windows and Linux, is: https://github.com/jdmaweb/NVDARemoteServer There's a readme file on the page, at heading level 1, that has a "Building" heading so that you can see how to build it. If you have good enough experience with the command line, this should not be a problem for you. If you'd like to point your IP to a domain, your best option for the free route is to use something like no-ip.org or duckdns.org which will let you point an IP address to a subdomain of your choosing. Brian, regarding your message about remote servers, all of you can please go ahead and add unlimitedhoperadio.com to your known hosts. This is one that I put up not only so I can control my own machines while I'm away from them or just to have them on there as controlled machines, but for this very reason, in the event that anyone needs an extra host out of Newark, New Jersey in the United States to go to if necessary. Hi,
I don’t use NVDA Remote at all to remote into any machine, I use RDP, Remote Desktop Protocol, then run Narrator on the host machine.
That seems accessible, if the host is configured correctly.
Heck, I can even run NVDA via RDP.
All the best

Re: How do I Stop NVDA from saying Blank when I arrow down in a document or email
Gene
As I recall, someone mentioned an add-on today that skipps blank llines
when using read to end in browse mode. So using that should eliminate some
of the problem. You may be able to skip blank lines with the add-on while
having the convenience of using read to end. I don’t use it and others can
discuss it, but as I recall, there is a skim feature that allows you to skip to
the next line or skip a block of links by using down arrow while in read to end
to skip to the next line and n to skip blocks of links while resuming reading in
read to end. You can move as you would when not in read to end and have
reading continue without having to issue read to end again.

arrow down in a document or email Just to explain why read to end is not, as is often suggested, really a resolution for this issue. If I am reading and email with say multiple links of 200 characters or more, or obscure graphic descripters, or perhaps obscure table layouts if you need some table verbosity, the last thing you want your screenreader to do is to tediously babble through all these verbose elements of an email in a read to end sequence. You need in these circumstances to quickly skip through all this by simply pressing the down arrow to read through an email efficiently and skip all the verbose link / elelment description whilst being aware it is there if you need to go back and review.

It should be able to be done but is there a reason you don’t use read to end in e-mails? Read to end doesn’t announce blank lines and starts reading the text skipping all blank lines if there are any.
Also, what program are you using for e-mail and are you reading mail in plain text or HTML?

Thank you for bringing this up! It’s something that frequently irritates me but because it tends to happen during the midst of my work day, I forget to jot it down as a thing to explore here on the message board after work. What would really be ideal is an option in NVDA settings that would cause the NVDA cursor to simply bypass blank lines. Sometimes when trying to read an email in outlook I have to press the down arrow well over a dozen times just to get to the first non-blank text. Control down arrow is supposed to take you to the next block but this doesn’t work, either. There’s no Practical reason why a user would want to sit there pounding the down arrow like a trained monkey just hearing the word ”blank” over and over and over LOL. it’s a mindless but seemingly unavoidable waste of time.
