Very often, I'd say in the vast majority of cases, neither would I. But that's one of the reasons that restarting with add-ons disabled is part of The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues that are required to have been taken prior to filing an issue.

It's so easy to do, and once it becomes a part of your basic troubleshooting arsenal, you find that add-ons are an issue more often than you may ever have presumed.

I wouldn't assume the problem will correct itself. I don't use Electron Apps and I don't know if technically, the problem could be the same. A symptom doesn't necessarily come from the same cause.

Sending a log to someone with the technnical knowledge to understand it may tell us what the problem is. I don't recall that suggestion being made yet.

Could I ask also have you tried the following to see if there is a difference.

Download a fresh copy of nvda and when you click on it there are 3 options one is to make a portable copy of nvda. Pick this option but also make sure you create a directory called nvda so the files go into it. Then if you know how make a shortcut to the desktop and asign a hot key for it to start it.

Or if you do it off a usb stick you will need to click on the nvda.exe file to start it. When it is running then try going back into the browser and see if the problem is fixed.

If this is the case then the nvda.ini file might of got corrupted on the installer version.

But if you still have the same problem with the fresh copy then it may not be nvda.

If it works perfect with a portable copy then I would completely uninstall nvda from the control panel.

Then press the windows key + R to bring up the run dialogue then type %appdata% then press the enter key. You will be given a list of folders with settings in them delete the nvda one then close that screen.

From the fresh copy of nvda then reinstall nvda to the computer.

The other option is in cases resetting snvda to factory defaults will do the trick. But make sure when you do this and start up nvda you get the message where you can pick your layout having nvda start at startup etc. You will know it has been done correctly if you see that message.

If none of the above work it might be a good idea to disable all add ons and see if that fixes the problem.

To do that when you close nvda with nvda key + Q when you tab there is a combo box arrow down to disable all add ons then tab to ok then press the enter key. If that does the trick then it might be a matter of seeing which add on is doing it then remove it.

It will read web pages, it will follow the mouse pointer, it will follow the tab key through links. But if i press H, X, 1 or any letter it just repeats the letter pressed back to me. It makes it frustrating to jump forward for our blind student in his known web pages (eg GMail in HTML mode)

All browsers though we use Chrome and Firefox with the blind student.

I saw, at least a year ago, a reference to a webpage that suggested making setup changes in Windows 10 to make it more NVDA friendly. I can no longer find that reference or the page. I'm sure it had a list of about 10 settings/registry changes/services that could be tweaked. We were still running Windows server 2012 at that time, and NVDA was behaving well. It has never worked correctly on this desktop.

Have you tried launching it with narrator running only, if it crashes then this is an adobe issue and should be taken up with the company, if they even care about such things.

Have you reset nvda, reinstalled it, done a scan for mailware, done the dcim thing etc? I’m no thaving this issue, it keeps my thing at line 2 when I need it.

OK, my point exactly, though I saved the configuration with NVDA+CONTROL+c, then just restarting NVDA, the device I told NVDA to use is again NOT selected but Microsoft sound mapper which I DO NOT WANT. The device is running because my computer doesn't take power from the device since it is plugged into a powered hub, but NVDA insists on using sound mapper.

So, as I'd mentioned if I am recording off the net through Edge and redirecting it to virtual cable line one which with edge is using Microsoft sound mapper, restart NVDA for any reason, it reverts to sound mapper and any speech then gets recorded, destroying any recording I've done with what my synthesizer is saying.

No thanks, :) and I then need to start the recording all over, etc.

btw I hadn't seen other replies to this message, just Quentin's, thank you.

The original poster mentioned they had saved with NVDA+control+c so this seems like a different issue. FWIW, I just went into NVDA's synthesizer settings, changed my output device, saved and restarted NVDA and it came up using the output device I had changed to, so that seems to work as advertised. For Curtis - If NVDA is starting on system startup, I wonder if it could be that the device you are intending to use isn't ready yet and that is why it falls back to the Microsoft Sound mapper? If you make the change, save settings and then restart NVDA, what sound device is selected? If that works then it might be the device not being ready on system startup, although I can't think of a workaround for that offhand.

comes in through Edge, right?

So if I tell NVDA to only use my sound card, why oh why is not that part
of the saved configuration? I ONLY WISH NVDA to use what I tell it too,
not to re-do sound mapper.

How many times does windows' figure they know more than we do?

There is a well written read me you could access.  I don't believe you are
not good at websites, you just need to practice using them, and the site is
very accessible. Everyone is good at navigation as long as the site is
accessible, properly labeled and coded to work well with screen readers.

however, nvda reads the drangon user interface in Spanish. When I
installed Dragon first, I  checked the 'all english' choice. Anything

Think you guys got off the point.

He didn't say the 64 bit din't work with windows 10 it was NVDA it didn't work with.

So far with win 11 you can still run 32 bit. However, Microsoft did state that after 11 32 bit useage would be dropping off just like internet explorer. Then even NVDA will need a complete rewrite to 64 bit seeing how its only 32 bit now.

The Quick Notetaker add-on is a wonderful tool which allows writing notes quickly and easily anytime and from any app the user is using. Whether the user is watching a video for example, or participating in a meeting on Zoom, teams or Google meet, they can easily and smoothly open the notetaker and take a note. In order to create a quick note, NVDA + Alt + n key combination can be used, a floating window appears at the top left corner of the screen, so the note can be typed there.

Every note that is being Created can optionally get the active window title, and as such, the note content can get the context in which this note was created by having the note title as the active window title the user was using. This behavior can be changed from the add-on settings, where the user can decide whether the active window title is captured when creating a new note.

The Notetaker dialog

The note edit area: When opening the Notetaker interface the focus will be in this edit area. Writing with Markdown (a markup language to easily produce HTML content) is supported also. For more info on Markdown visit the Markdown guide page.
Preview note: to view the note in an HTML window.
Copy: to copy the note as is to the clipboard.
Copy HTML code: to copy the HTML code representing the note. A useful feature for those who write in Markdown.
A checkbox to allow saving the note as Microsoft Word also, or updating the corresponding one if it exists.
A save and close button.
A discard button to discard changes when desired. When unsaved changes exist, a warning message is displayed to the user asking if they are sure they want to exit and discard their changes.

The Notes Manager interface

Opening and closing this interface

NVDA + Alt + v will launch the Notes Manager interface.
Using either the Escape key or the close button found at the bottom of this window will close this interface.

The notes list

The notes are organized in a tabular list which includes:

The note title: If the note hasn’t got the active window title, the first line of the note will be the note title displayed in this list.
Last edited time stamp.
A preview text of the note content.

The options available in Notes Manager interface

View note: to view the note in an HTML window.
Edit note: opens the note to be edited using Notetaker interface.
Copy note: copies the note content as is to the clipboard.
Create a Microsoft Word document: Creates a Microsoft Word document representing this note in case it has no such document.
Open in Microsoft Word: opens the Microsoft Word document attached to this note in case it has a one.
Copy HTML code: copies the HTML code representing this note. A useful feature for those who write in Markdown.
Delete note: displays a warning before performing the note deletion.
New note: the Notetaker interface can be reached from this interface to create a new note.
Open settings: opening the add-on settings is also possible from here.
Close: to close the window.

The add-on settings

The add-on settings are a part of NVDA’s settings interface. To reach those settings, the user needs to open the NVDA menu using NVDA key + n, choose preferences > settings, and then arrow down until reaching Quick Notetaker category.

Using the settings interface the user can:

Default documents directory: to choose the default directory where Quick Notetaker documents will be saved. The user can press the “Browse” button to change the path of this directory.
Ask me each time where to save the note's corresponding Microsoft Word document: a checkbox (not checked by default) – to show the dialog for choosing the location where the document will be saved on each save or update operation for the note’s Microsoft Word document if such a one exists.
Open the note's corresponding Microsoft Word document after saving or updating: a checkbox (not checked by default) – to allow the user to choose whether the Microsoft Word document will be opened after a save or update operation in case the note has such document.
Capture the active window title when creating a new note: a checkbox (checked by default) – to allow the note to get the active window title the user was using when they created the note. This title will be also the title of the Microsoft Word document for the note in case it has a one.
Remember the note taker window size and position: a checkbox (not checked by default) – to tell the add-on to remember the size and the position of the Notetaker dialog when creating or editing a note. As such, when the user opens the dialog next time, the position and the size will be the same as the last time the dialog was used. The default position of this dialog is at the top left corner of the screen.
Auto align text when editing notes (relevant for RTL languages): a checkbox (checked by default) – to control whether the text when creating or editing a note should be auto aligned according to the language used. This is mostly relevant for right to left languages. For example, if the language used is Arabic or Hebrew, then the text will be right aligned when this option is chosen, if the language is English or French, then the text will be left aligned.

To be honest jean with the latest version of firefox 93.0, if I download a bunch of files or if say I go to a site like amd, then maybe another one like skype and then try to download a file the dialog will come up but firefox will crash and I have to end it.

That doesn't mean I can't complete my tasks, but its been like that since I loaded 93.

Its not uber badd as it will work to view things but it can get a bit annoying at times.

I really need to report this to mozilla.

Hi Brian,

I very much went against this advice, and installed 64 bit versions of file compression, format conversion, and office software etc.Even browsers, I was one of the early upgraders to Firefox 64 bit. Until Reader 64 bit, I had no issues whatsoever with 64 bit software. Nor did I see any advice with Mozilla, Microsoft etc against choosing a 64 bit version.

You've somehow overlooked or misread the table on that page. 32-bit software remains supported under all 64-bit versions of Windows, including Windows 11. And the table for the 32-bit version of Acrobat Reader states it runs under:

Windows 11 (64 bit), Windows 10 (32 bit and 64 bit) version 1809 or later, Windows 8, 8.1 (32 bit and 64 bit)†, Windows 7 SP1 (32 bit and 64 bit), or Windows Server - 2008 R2 (64 bit), 2012 (64 bit), 2012 R2 (64 bit)†, 2016 (64 bit), or 2019 (64 bit)

Windows 10 is the final version of Windows that has an actual 32-bit version of the Windows operating system, but that's a separate issue. Most of us are running Windows 10 64-bit unless we have very old hardware, and most will still have been using the 32-bit versions of Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office, and a number of other pieces of software that still "prefer" (for lack of a better way of putting it) to install their 32-bit versions by default and only use 64-bit when explicitly chosen.

It's still pretty much "the general advice" among techs that if a piece of software "has some age on it" and there exist both 32 and 64-bit versions, to install the 32-bit versions for a more trouble-free experience. I fully expect that this is going to change in the years after Windows 11 becomes common as there will be no reason to focus on maintaining 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and 64-bit will definitely win out as time marches on.

I really like using browsers for PDF documents. I can’t comment in general; I mostly use Edge but other browsers may work well. Edge opens documents much faster than Adobe. I don’t read PDF documents much but from the little I do, it seems to me that Edge usually renders them as well as Adobe.

about can get a 32 bit adobe reader but yeah its done this before.

For a while its been ok.

Still is ok.

This is what you may want to do.

1. open the document then imediately alt tab away, do it again.

Wait till its finnished processing.

push up arrow, it should ding.

Hit alt tab again, and keep doing that till the document appears.

Now this will work with online documents, but I have had documents which
just don't work so well due to how they are constructed.

For those I use balabolka but they can run together.

In general any coded web documents do not crash and most documents
should be ok but yeah there are issues some times.

Hi Enes

I typically always install 64 bit versions of Apps when available with no problem, but have noticed some stability issues with Adobe Reader DC 64 and NVDA. I run the 32 bit version on my work machine and it’s smooth sailing.

If you want to try the 32 bit version and see if it resolves your issue, remove your current install and download the 32 bit version from the below link. This page will let you choose, rather than Adobe detecting your system and automatically giving you the 64 bit option. Choose the version that simply states it’s “for Windows”. This is the 32 bit one you want.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions

Interested to know if others have noticed instability with the 64 bit version.

I don't know if downgrading to 32 bit is even possible. I am hoping someone from NVAccess would respond to this.
