Re: the talk tonight

bareware.dk usually has the latest version
note if it complains about audio not working either switch to direct sound then back to windows audio not windows session.
windows session is supposed to be better but I have never got it working and when I have on each start the program complains it can start it so I havn't bothered with it.

Hi Scott,
I will respond with two things here:
* 100 is the loudest and 0 is the softest volume you can acquire.
* If you are wondering what difference exists between the three
sliders, the NVDACon page explains that by the following quotes:
'5. While in any room, you will see three slider controls after the
list of channels (rooms and channels are the same thing), along with
an edit field. The first edit field is for system and user messages.
The second lets you chat by typing text and pressing enter. The first
slider changes your microphone's sensitivity (gain), the second
changes the volume of the room in general as you hear it, and we are
not sure what the third one does.'
Also, to test your mike audio, in earlier conferences, we did have a
mike audio testing room specifically, but due to technicalities I am
unaware of, our server administrator tells us this may not be possible
to implement in Teamtalk 5, or this NVDACon. If I remember correctly,
the alternative way of checking your microphone is by pressing Ctrl +
4 in any room or channel, and your audio should be echoed back for
your understanding and testing, as I was earlier told by someone.

By the way, for the Android users on this list, I would also like to
mention that the Teamtalk Android app is in development stage
currently, but you still might want to try it out from
http://bearware.dk/?p=279 as its optimal accessibility with Talkback
is explicitly assured. A friend of mine and myself are going to test
the Teamtalk Android app ourselves as well. Will share our findings
once we are thoroughly done with our assessment.
Thanks.

Re: the talk tonight

Hi Mario,
You must choose the correct setup from the link Governor has provided
and the appropriate installation and setup options so as to download
the client of Teamtalk 5 optimized for accessibility with screen
readers.
Instructions on the same, as well as how to specifically join and
connect to the NVDACon server are all available in a comprehensive
manner on the NVDACon homepage under the How to Join Us section,
which, for your and others' reference who may have missed my earlier
mails, is as below:

'How to join us
TeamTalk is a program that you run on your Windows PC (there is a Mac
version available, but we have found that it does not work well with
VoiceOver and so we do not recommend you use it). To get started,
follow these steps:
1. Download the software (TeamTalk 5) from bearware.dk
2. When you are installing the above program, you will come to a
screen where you can choose which components you want. Tab to the list
of components and arrow down until you find the "TeamTalk 5 classic"
option. Press space, then enter. For best results with screen reading
software, it is strongly recommended that you do this; the standard
(non-classic) version is not very accessible.
3. Once the setup process is complete, and you are in the TeamTalk
application (start it up if it is not running already), follow the
below procedure to connect to the server:
◦ From within TeamTalk, press f2. Tab until you get to the "host
properties" group, and simply erase any information that may be
already in the edit fields. For the "entry name", type anything you
want that will tell you what this server is (for example, "NVDACon").
For "host address", type nvda-kr.org. Set TCP port to 10333 and UDP
port to 10333 and skip everything else. Press enter on "join/update"
and you should be all set.
◦ Alternatively, if you have TeamTalk 5 installed, select this link to
connect to the server directly (note that you'll need to change your
name to something else by pressing F4).
4. Once you are logged on, you can join any of the available rooms
(note that some may be password-protected). We first recommend doing
an audio test (choose the option form the context menu) To join this
or any room, just arrow to it and press control-j (to leave a room,
arrow to it and press control-l). You can also hit the applications
key, or shift-f10, on a room and choose the option you want.
5. While in any room, you will see three slider controls after the
list of channels (rooms and channels are the same thing), along with
an edit field. The first edit field is for system and user messages.
The second lets you chat by typing text and pressing enter. The first
slider changes your microphone's sensitivity (gain), the second
changes the volume of the room in general as you hear it, and we are
not sure what the third one does.
If you are using the JAWS for Windows screen reader or NvDA, there are
now JAWS scripts and NvDA add-on available for use with TeamTalk. The
link will take you to a website where you can download these free
scripts. We do not offer support for the scripts, though; please refer
to the above link for help instead.'
Source: http://nvda-kr.org/en/nvdacon.php

I will also ask Joseph, the maintainer of this page, to update this
section to reflect recent changes of availability of a publicly
available and accessible version of Teamtalk for iOS and one under
active development for Android, so potential NVDACon participants are
made fully aware of the various means of joining.
Thanks.

the alternative way of checking your microphone is by pressing Ctrl +
4 in any room or channel, and your audio should be echoed back for
your understanding and testing, as I was earlier told by someone.

By the way, for the Android users on this list, I would also like to
mention that the Teamtalk Android app is in development stage
currently, but you still might want to try it out from
http://bearware.dk/?p=279 as its optimal accessibility with Talkback

Re: the talk tonight

Bhavya shah

Hi Scott,
I will respond with two things here:

Re: making group calls with skype

Jamie Pauls <jamiepauls@...>

I needed to uncheck the option in Skype that allows you to place a call as soon as you press enter on a contact's name. Assuming you have done this, press enter on a contact's name and tab to the call button. After the first call has been answered, move to the contact you wish to add to the call. After you press enter on the second person's name, you should be able to tab to a button that says "add to conversation" or something similar. You will know it when you hear it. There may be other ways to accomplish this, but I am not aware of them. Hope this helps.

Hello Juan,

I can recommend keeping at least a portable version of Sumatrapdf, which comes in really, really handy if you want to save a document as txt.

The menus are accessible. If you open a document, even if you can't read it straight away, you can save it as txt (in case you need to do so), and the result is the best I've had for this purpose. Much better than Foxit, which inserta lines with page numbers, that can be bothering; better than Adobe, which I haven't used for years, but didn't work as nicely as Sumatra...

Hello,

Yes, I agree. We should involve someone who knows about programming and accessibilty, so that the programme could be made usable by the blind.

It is easy to use and, on top of it all, it's also got a portable version...

I'm ready and willing to join a petition to the devs to make the programme accessible.

I know nothing about programming, so I have no idea of what making the programme accessible would entail, but it would be great to have such a fast-loading, clean and easy-to-use tool available.

It also reads apubs, which would make it an even more valuable tool.

I repeat, I'm willing and rady to go for it, if a joint letter or petition is created and sent out to the devs.

alternatively, if there's anyone among us who knows enough about programming, and would be willing and able to make the software accessible (possibly even through an NVDA add-on),

Ok, there's the challenge... Who's picking it up? (smile).

I have experienced your issues with editing formulas in cells on my work laptop which is running windows 7 32bit and office 2013. However, I am on windows 10 on a 64 bit machine running excel 2016 and do not have this problem. I had similar experiences with windows 7 64bit that is, I was able to edit text in cells directly.

Try making the following changes.

1.       From the advanced tab, disable allow editing directly in cells.

2.       Disable hardware graphics acceleration  again in the advanced tab.

Hi

Has anyone encountered problems using MS Excel, in particular when using the VBA editor to write macros (I am using Windows 7), Office 2007.  NVDA occasionally announces ‘blank’ where there are letters (this occurs mainly wen the letter follows an open bracket)  and may also miss out entire lines of code when moving around using the arrow keys.  This behaviour also occurs after pressing F2 to display a formula.  Using the Tools/Options dialog,to configure the VBA editor,   I have set font to Courier New Western and pointsize to 10  but NVDA announces it as Ariel 8 point.

Does anyone know of any work arounds or NVDA parameters I can use to prevent this behaviour from occurring?

Cheers

Re: youtube-dl

hi, good rundown , I love it,

just, couple of things to ask here,

could we download a large playlist or multiple videos, say, I have
about thousand youtube links, could it be paste there and download,
thanks

On 3/16/16, Shaun Everiss <sm.everiss@...> wrote:
Hi all.
I was going to do a small audio tutorial on this but decided to do it in
text instead.
Yesterday during the presentation or just before someone on here asked
me about youtube-dl and I promised I'd do it if I had time.
Time came today and I did youtube-dl well ran it through its paces.
Firstly I didn't use the command line youtube-dl.
The way I did it was via youtube-dl-g which is what you should put in
google, the first link should get you to the github page.
Download the windows setup zip file.
note, if you actually don't want to have the setup, coppy the link to it
then delete the everything after /releases and go to the releases, I in
the end got the portable.
Next, the question was do I need python, no everything needed is
contained in the program.
For the demonstration I found a youtube vid that was 7 minutes long from
nvda well about nvda and there are a few of these, I then ran
youtube-dl-g executable file.
Layout.
its a simple layout, from what I could figure out, there is an update
button to update the program I assume, a ariea for urls and an options
button as well as a download button.
I paste in a youtube url and hit download.
I then was able to get access to the file who's location opened on the
end of the download and as well as that the program put up a dialog on
what to do and then it played in winamp as expected.
So why not the podcast?
While the program was quite simple to use, access wize there were a few
things lacking.
While I could guess some of the option pages, control tab when I
switched to the next tab the tabs did not speak the first one said tab
control but everything else never spoke.
So while I could get access and change audio options, the video types in
their combo boxes, and turn on and off audio conversion which seemlessly
happens on the fly by the way, I was unable to get the titles of the
combo boxes.
So there were a few pages where I have no idea what they were.
As it stands you can with any confidence set the following.
path.
you will want to do that immediately as it defaults to %username% which
while fine is not.
I had adobe digital additions do that to me with its settings, this made
my user directory inaccessable till I killed the file it made %appdata%
not work.
sadly %username% and a few other variables are still screwed over thank
god I don't need these that often.
Since there is no brouse button I would set it to something off the root
or somewhere you can find stuff later.
for me I put it in the downloads folder off my root which is where I put
ftp files to.
the next tab after the general one which also has a reset options button.
has a editable box saying default and by going up and down you can
choose the video type downloaded what sort web m mp4 apple, 3gp, mobile
and flv flash video of different qualities.
In addition there is a box becide it set to none which I assume has a
video you can save it to if you don't want the video in that format.
once you set either the second to none or the first to default the
second box is no more.
the default is probably whatever the video came in mostly mp4 apple video.
the next tab has the audio on and off checkbox which is always unticked.
The formats are, mpeg layer 3, apple losless aac, ogg vorbis and
microsoft wave.
as they appear in the list they are
mp3
aac, wav and vorbis.
You can set these in the next box high mid or low.
I sadly couldn't customise what those settings were.
The next page is a lot of numbers and I didn't know what those were.
The next page all with control tab I assume because of protected fields
is your proxy or something else.
the next 2 pages are numbers and I assume its all to do with networks
but I don't know what they do as they don't speak.
there is no ok or cancel so you just alt f4 out of the options window.
Your next question is can youtube -dl -g be used?
Yes.
Can it be used fully, not without some work.
Its also worth noting that its not even passed version 1.0 yet.
I myself don't need to convert many youtube videos however I'd like to
test if someone can download a huge video say 2-5 hours long and see
what that does to how long it takes.
it took 1 minute at 250kbps to get a 7 minute video on nvda.
I do think that if someone uses this a lot they should probably ask the
author to make things more accessable, however all it needs are things
like labling of all the options, tabs, boxes, icons, etc as the main
issue is that most of the options and interface does not have much
labeling and thats probably all it needs.
The main interface is ok, but its just options that are not labeled.
it also did not contain any docs over its readme which being a wing it
guy didn't read, and I am confident to say you don't need that file as
such.
Being that it is opensource, I am not sure about linux/windows but I am
wandering if someone has time they could make this thing work better
access wize or write an addon for nvda.
Look round but I don't think much needs to be done.
I may contact the author and see anyway.

Hi Ken

The audio ducking feature is only in the installer version of NVDA and not in the portable version of NVDA. It was put into the NVDA 2016.1 release.

I just tried it with the audio ducking feature and it worked with speechhub.

Is when you are having problems with speechhub is it when you first boot up the computer? I have 6 machines here all with speechhub on them, the 5 of them which are duel core machines load with speechhub every time with the correct voices, but they are not the intensive ones. I have not tried it with the mary voices for a while.

Now and again on the quad core machine when it starts up, it will default back to the E speak voice. I think this is a timing issue
With the installer version of NVDA I use the alt + ctrl + the letter N to restart NVDA then it comes up with the voice that was chosen. Isaac is the developer of speechhub and i think he is on the list still.
I can pass on the details to him.

Hello,

No, it doesn't.

Sumatra pdf doesn't have a text viewer, so no text can be read.

Pity, because it also reads epubs, amongst other things.

Hovever, i found that it does a great job saving pdf files to txt.
Of all these pdf reading programme, this is the one that "ruins" the

How to find specified font on word text?

coscell@...

Hi

If someone tell me to read some red text in a word file, how can I find it as soon as possible?

youtube-dl

Hi all.
I was going to do a small audio tutorial on this but decided to do it in text instead.
Yesterday during the presentation or just before someone on here asked me about youtube-dl and I promised I'd do it if I had time.
Time came today and I did youtube-dl well ran it through its paces.
Firstly I didn't use the command line youtube-dl.
The way I did it was via youtube-dl-g which is what you should put in google, the first link should get you to the github page.
Download the windows setup zip file.
note, if you actually don't want to have the setup, coppy the link to it then delete the everything after /releases and go to the releases, I in the end got the portable.
Next, the question was do I need python, no everything needed is contained in the program.
For the demonstration I found a youtube vid that was 7 minutes long from nvda well about nvda and there are a few of these, I then ran youtube-dl-g executable file.
Layout.
its a simple layout, from what I could figure out, there is an update button to update the program I assume, a ariea for urls and an options button as well as a download button.
I paste in a youtube url and hit download.
I then was able to get access to the file who's location opened on the end of the download and as well as that the program put up a dialog on what to do and then it played in winamp as expected.
So why not the podcast?
While the program was quite simple to use, access wize there were a few things lacking.
While I could guess some of the option pages, control tab when I switched to the next tab the tabs did not speak the first one said tab control but everything else never spoke.
So while I could get access and change audio options, the video types in their combo boxes, and turn on and off audio conversion which seemlessly happens on the fly by the way, I was unable to get the titles of the combo boxes.
So there were a few pages where I have no idea what they were.
As it stands you can with any confidence set the following.
path.
you will want to do that immediately as it defaults to %username% which while fine is not.
I had adobe digital additions do that to me with its settings, this made my user directory inaccessable till I killed the file it made %appdata% not work.
sadly %username% and a few other variables are still screwed over thank god I don't need these that often.
Since there is no brouse button I would set it to something off the root or somewhere you can find stuff later.
for me I put it in the downloads folder off my root which is where I put ftp files to.
the next tab after the general one which also has a reset options button.
has a editable box saying default and by going up and down you can choose the video type downloaded what sort web m mp4 apple, 3gp, mobile and flv flash video of different qualities.
In addition there is a box becide it set to none which I assume has a video you can save it to if you don't want the video in that format.
once you set either the second to none or the first to default the second box is no more.
the default is probably whatever the video came in mostly mp4 apple video.
the next tab has the audio on and off checkbox which is always unticked.
The formats are, mpeg layer 3, apple losless aac, ogg vorbis and microsoft wave.
as they appear in the list they are
mp3
aac, wav and vorbis.
You can set these in the next box high mid or low.
I sadly couldn't customise what those settings were.
The next page is a lot of numbers and I didn't know what those were.
The next page all with control tab I assume because of protected fields is your proxy or something else.
the next 2 pages are numbers and I assume its all to do with networks but I don't know what they do as they don't speak.
there is no ok or cancel so you just alt f4 out of the options window.
Your next question is can youtube -dl -g be used?
Yes.
Can it be used fully, not without some work.
Its also worth noting that its not even passed version 1.0 yet.
I myself don't need to convert many youtube videos however I'd like to test if someone can download a huge video say 2-5 hours long and see what that does to how long it takes.
it took 1 minute at 250kbps to get a 7 minute video on nvda.
I do think that if someone uses this a lot they should probably ask the author to make things more accessable, however all it needs are things like labling of all the options, tabs, boxes, icons, etc as the main issue is that most of the options and interface does not have much labeling and thats probably all it needs.
The main interface is ok, but its just options that are not labeled.
it also did not contain any docs over its readme which being a wing it guy didn't read, and I am confident to say you don't need that file as such.
Being that it is opensource, I am not sure about linux/windows but I am wandering if someone has time they could make this thing work better access wize or write an addon for nvda.
Look round but I don't think much needs to be done.
I may contact the author and see anyway.

Hi all,

Using NVDA 2016.1 and using the physical mouse, whenever I move from
paragraph to paragraph NVDA says paragraph before reading the text.
I can't remember how to turn that off. Your help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jim
