Does Avaya phone system work well with NVDA and Jaws?

Saylor Cooper

Hello NVDA users,

I am reaching out because I have a question about accessibility with the Avaya Softphone system. I will begin certification for a client who I will work with on the liveops platform where I will use Avaya for the phone system and therefore I’m wondering if it is accessible with NVDA and Jaws? I will also be connecting to the client using the horizon VMWare virtual desktop and therefore wondering if NVDA works with that as well? Thanks.

Thanks Joseph for the update. Based on your experience, can you think
of roughly when it might hit the stable version?

Hi,

In a way, yes in that Windows App Essentials comes with support for features
introduced in Insider Preview builds. For instance, the latest dev build of
the add-on includes a fix to deal with IME (input method editor) screen in
both Windows 11 Version 21H2 (build 22000) and Insider Preview build 22478
where NVDA may announce candidate items twice (caused by two different
events coming from candidate items). Insider Preview is the reason why I am
holding onto this add-on and its development despite plans to let go of my
other add-ons to focus on other things in life; but I do foresee a future
without Windows App Essentials add-on, but that is at least years away (I'm
sure folks will contribute to the add-on despite me not taking an active
role in NVDA Community anymore as I'm prioritizing earning a master's
degree).

By the way, I need to clarify that the fix for File Explorer lag is actually
being tested inside dev channel builds, not in 22000.28x as I initially
thought (apologies).

Cheers,

Joseph

NVDA: Linespacing and Paragraph Indent Word 2019

David Russell

Hello,
First, a big thanks to Quentin for answering my questions about
methodology to perform line spacing and paragraph indent. I noted your
instructive.
I have one further question on the portion where you discuss how to
hear measurement.
Will this also inform of extraneous text inserting itself into a given document?
I write fiction, and have used the capital-eight (star) to indicate
scene breaks.
I was told this added either underscores or a series of ... to text,
and my sighted partner was able to delete the unwanted.
I had not heard NVDA report these findings.
Thanks again. I receive the Digest so will look for an answer in the next issue.

Hello there,

Josef, thanks for the answer to both questions.

I gather that the Windows App Essentials addon does a lot of work to make nvda work on insider builds?

Best regards.

Francisco.

Hi,

These improvements will show up to non-Insiders soon. Typically Insiders on different channels will test latest code from:

  • Dev channel: latest code that passed tests inside Microsoft
  • Beta and release preview channels: latest code for the current Windows release

Build 22000.28x is the build being tested by Windows Insiders on beta and release preview channels, and it includes fixes for File Explorer. People on dev channel have already moved onto build 22400 series.

As for a possibly related question about NVDA supporting Windows Insider Preview builds: without going into details, yes, NVDA does support Insider Preview builds to some extent.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: NVDA: Linespacing and Paragraph Indent Word 2019

Quentin Christensen

You did hide your questions in there :)

Ok, the two I found:
1) Can you press control+number to change line spacing?  Yes, and NVDA will report Single Line Spacing (CONTROL+1), Double line spacing (control+2) or 1.5 line spacing (control+5).

2) Indenting the first line of a paragraph.  I actually wrote a bit about this the other week when covering how NVDA 2021.2 now better reports line indent in Word:  https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-29th-september-2021/#indent  Basically, the way I do it: CONTROL+M to indent the whole paragraph and then control+shift+t to decrease the hanging indent (the indent of every line except the first).

Like any formatting option, once set, it will carry over to any subsequent typing from that point on.  To have it happen automatically, you would need to edit your normal.dotm template and add it to that.

Kind regards

Quentin.

Hello Group,

I am pasting the online instructions offered by Microsoft Support for
screen reader users as it pertains to doing line spacing and first
line indentation for MS Word, 2019 version.
I will define my confusion as you read:
Set line spacing
1.
In your document, select the paragraph whose line spacing you want to
format. If you want to set the line spacing for the entire document,
press Ctrl+A to select all its content.
2.
To set line spacing options for a paragraph, press Alt+H, K. You hear:
"Line and paragraph spacing." Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select
from a list of frequently used line spacing sizes, and press Enter to
apply it.
Question: Is this advising, Line spacing can occur when one selects an
entire document, control-a, then press alt h, and k, and up or down
arrow for desired spacing.
Will the old method of control plus  number value also work anymore?

2. Set first line indent
With a first line indent, the first line of a paragraph is indented
more than the other lines in the paragraph.
To add a first line indent to the paragraph, move the focus to the
beginning of the first line of the paragraph, and press the Tab key.
Question: Is the focus the same as the cursor key?
How do I indent the first line of a paragraph for an entire document
and subsequent documents?
older versions of Word, wasn't use of the tab key for indenting
discouraged. What makes it acceptable practice now?

Thanks for your help with this issue!

Then we are back to there is something wrong that is virtually certain to be limited to your computer, and I'd say most likely with your PDF reading software.

So, just as there is the consistent advice to "try another browser," when there are issues with a webpage, the same applies to PDF readers:  try another alternative.  Under Windows 10 the Edge browser itself does a bang-up job of opening PDFs, so I'd try opening that same document in Edge rather than Adobe Reader DC to see if the result is different.  If it is, then uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader DC.  If it's not, then start doing the repair steps for Windows.

Hi:  You are correct Bryan.  I didn't give all the information.  When I open the pdf, I was told that it didn't load completely.  So, I tried again.  Then I tried printing it and all I received was blank pages, checked by a sighted person.  Using Windows 21h2 with nvda 2021.2 and Firefox as well as Adobe Reader dc.  Yet I sent this email with attachment to my sighted son, who isn't running any screen reading equipment and he could open it with no problems.  I know it was an image, which had been scanned since I called the person who had sent it to me.

You need to give something more here.  You just print a PDF from any PDF reader or editor.  It doesn't matter one bit if it is an image scanned origin PDF or one that was created as a PDF to begin with.

Re: problem with NVDA

hurrikennyandopo ...

Hi

Do you mean nvda is not speaking the version number of your computer operating system?

Are you wanting to copy the information read out say to note pad that is spoken out.

I just went into it and it was spoken out but then if I wanted to copy the info read out I then used object navigation to get to that information.

In my case using a desktop pc I used the nvda key + number 8 on the numeric keypad to get into that section.  I then used the 7 key on the numeric keypad to get to the top of the information on the top line. I then used the number 1 on the numeric keypad to get to the start of that line then used the nvda key + f9 key to start the mark. Used the number 9 on the numeric keypad to get me to the bottom of the information  then made sure I was on the end of that line with the number 3 on the numeric keypad  then used the nvda key + f10 key twice to copy it to the clip board then paste it into say a email.

If you just want to hear it again the nvda key + b key will tell you but to copy it you need to use object navigation.

Hope it helps.
