Thank you for mentioning your group dedicated to the use of Skype with screen readers, as this is most likely something going on with Skype itself.

You might twant to discuss this on my skype English list. There is a discussion about this now with the other screen reader. If you are having trouble, subscribe there and someone will, hopefully, be able to help you.

Re: NVDA and Outlook issue

Chris,

Whether or not you intend to try reporting an issue via GitHub, following The Most Basic Troubleshooting Steps for Suspected NVDA Issues
is a valuable thing to try just because it may allow you to isolate a possible cause.  I don't know what add-ons you may be using, but starting with add-ons disabled to see if one of them is playing up should be on your short list of diagnostic steps.

Someone else may have a very clear idea of what may be going on based on your description, but I don't.  But following those instructions allows you to get a much better handle on the situation and whether it's more likely to be NVDA-related or something else.

Hello, group:

I am a long-time NVDA supporter and user.  For over a month, I have been participating in the NYPL classes featuring Chancy fleet that focus on introducing screen reader users to NVDA.

Years ago, I used NVDA as a reliable portable speech program that could be loaded onto a thumb drive to be used when I was in the field and did not necessarily have access to a computer with speech already installed.  I thought so highly of NVDA that I became a monthly supporter, a commitment that I retain.

I just joined this group and consequently noticed that there was a recent upgrade.  So, I installed the upgrade and now Outlook is angry with mefor being a way for so long.

When I load Outlook, all seems normal.  However, whenever I attempt to reply, the program will not accept the characters: That key is not available or That function is not supported.  In any case, I cannot enter text into the Reply field.  Is there a setting that I am not aware of that must be invoked to correct this?  Any assistance will be appreciated.

You can do a couple of things:

- Make sure that Chrome's image description feature is turned on. This
will allow images with text to be read out as you browse the web. To do
this, press the applications key or shift+f10, and up arrow to the image
descriptions. Press enter to turn it on, and confirm.
- You can also use the NVDA OCR feature. This is a great feature for
reading screenshots, but can also be used to read the content of an
inaccessible app window, for example. To use this feature, simply press
NVDA+r. Note that when I say the NVDA key, I am referring to the Insert
key
or the caps lock key if you have that enabled or are in Laptop keyboard
layout mode.

Thanks, hope this helps.

Re: Making NVDA automatically read non-English characters.

Mohamed

If you know what the characters are, you could add them to the NVDA dictionary, or alternatively, you could also try the Unicode ASCII addon, which attempts to convert Unicode characters into an ASCII representation. https://nvda-addons.org/addon.php?id=234

On 10/30/2021 1:07 PM, John Isige wrote:

problem, but it got me curious.

Is there a way to get NVDA to automatically read characters like this? I
know there's an addon to tell you what characters are. I know some
synthesizers, e.g. the Vocalizer voices, can read some, e.g. Greek
letters on Wikipedia if you move character by character, whereas
Eloquence doesn't. Is there anything to do, like changing charset from
US or whatever, to get these to show up consistently? Obviously in this
case, it would spell the username character by character or something.
But right now, it looks like they have no username.

I'm actually less interested in getting it to show up in this specific
case than I am in the general problem. Basically, full access to the
Unicode charset, both reading and writing,  would be pretty awesome.

Most people use the desk top version but when you go into Skype its self
it is not changing into browse mode so use the nvda key + space bar to
do this. When it is in that mode you can use the letter F to get down to
the chats section then either use the space bar or enter key then go
down the page to read what is there.

The letter F will take you to form tabs, form fields etc in the desk top
version.

take

the app version you need to do a lot of tabbing so the desk top version
is much nicer to use.

John,

Nope.  I've never seen any machine that has, as the default setting, booting from anything except the system drive first in boot order.  Having USB first would be a PITA in many instances if someone has left a thumb drive or a USB external HDD connected and is booting up.  It would try to use either one of those and, if they are not bootable media, thing get stuck.
