Re: Making Portable NVDA
Steve Nutt
Hi,
You don’t need sighted assistance to completely reinstall Windows 10, I have done it on many occasions.
Once the media creation tool is running on the PC, then Narrator will kick in.
Reset This PC keeping nothing, will effectively do the same thing, again, no sighted help needed.
All the best

Re: Punctuation level has stopped working
Gene
When you say it didn't work, do you mean you could change the setting and it worked until you quit NVDA and ran it again or are you saying that there was no change when you tried to change the setting? the answer to the question may help identify what is causing the problem.

Are you using any NVDA add-ons? For it to have changed a few days ago if you have been running NVDA 2021.2 for some time indicates a change in something other than NVDA itself, and to affect an NVDA feature such as punctuation, a change to an add-on or your synthesizer seem most likely. Kind regards Quentin.

Punctuation level has stopped working
Gerry
Hello
A few days ago I noticed that the Punctuation level set in my nvda had changed to All. This is not what I want. I tried to reset to Some but this did not work. I tried to reset to None, same result. In both cases I saved the settings and restarted my computer. Nothing seems to work. I am on nvda version 2021.2 and Windows 10 version 21h OS build 19043.1288 I have looked at the user manual but cannot see what I am doing wrong. I have not tried the COMREG as it seems over the top for this issue. I have no Add-ons running. Any ideas. Thanks Gerry Parsons

ENHANCED PHONETIC READING
Stephen Thacker
Hi Quentin says use the beta as the link to the url I was sent is blocked. Please can someone send me the link for Enhanced Phonetic Reading Beta and nothing else as I have no interest in other projects or adons at this time. Someone suggested using the windows key with either 2 or 6 and this doesn’t work either on the number keypad or on the number keys below the fkeys. This should be renamed. When in screen review mode, the review cursor
doesn’t move. It maintains its place, as it should. It is in object
navigation that the navigator moves with the caret. Exactly what this
should be called, I’m not sure but it is not an accurate description as
presently stated. It causes confusion and implies that the user should be
in review to see the change.

I do not think an add on is necessary. When I am on a letter I am not sure of, I press the 2 on the numpad twice, quickly. So if I am on the letter b and press numpad 2 twice quickly, nvda will say bravo.

I was wrong. Include layout tables is still available as a
setting. It is in the browse mode settings. I was only looking in
the document formatting settings. I assume it means,if checked, that you
will be notified when you come across a table used in formatting a page and as I
said, the table in question isn’t a layout table.

Why do you use such a cumnbersome way of checking a message? You
could read by line if you want to move by segment through the message.

the latest released version of NVDA and Thunderbird on the lates version of Win 10. After typing a new message in thunderbird I use control left and right arrow to review what I have typed. As I do this each word is spoken up until you get to the last word at the end of the message and at that point NVDA only says the first letter of that last word. No big deal but kind of strange.

Re: supressing announcement of row and column in a web table
Gene
Layout tables appears to no longer be in the settings. But if you
have it, it has nothing to do with this problem and if you chec it, you will get
verbosity you probably don’t want. It means to announce when a layout
table, used for formatting, is encountered. This table isn’t a layout
table. It has nothing to do with formatting the page or part of it.

That may or may not work I guess. Otherwise, this could just be due to the
design of the tables themselves which I don't think we can get around as screen
reader users. HOpe this helps.

Interesting about the movement commands. ;In that table I've been talking about, where each item in the grid is labeled as a heading level 3, with headings unchecked, I can not move by headings in that table, not that I want to. But On another page, those commands still work as expected. I'm not sure what might be "special" about those heading level 3s, but they are not recognized if I try moving with h to move from heading to heading. No big deal; I see no reason for them to be there in the first place.

If you mean by recognition, that using the letter t won’t work, it has
nothing to do with that. All such settings are for spoken announcements
and all movement commands wwork as they did before. For example, I can
turn off if I turn off heading announcements and all movement by heading
commands still work.

Re: ssl error with nvda update and nvda remote add-on
Quentin Christensen
The add-on should still work, but it's probably easiest now to simply recommend installing the beta - because of our continuous alpha branch which seems well tested by a number of users, the beta version is generally pretty stable - and of course if there IS an issue, then it's important we find out about it (and once you run it and check for updates, the SSL error should be fixed so even if you needed to revert to 2021.2, the check for updates bug at least should be fixed. Re: supressing announcement of row and column in a web table
Gene
If you turn off everything regarding tables, you shouldn’t hear such
information. Let us know if you do. And if you still do, please send
the link to the page so others can see what they hear, unless the page can’t be
looked at by people in general.
I’m not sure the table off commands always work properly. Sometimes,
I hear table information when I am in a subfolder in Windows Explorer when I
shouldn’t. That’s in Windows 7, so it may be that for some reason, turning
off that information may not work in the table you are in. This may need
further checking by others.

visit a grocery store website which has its sale items laid out in a very nice table, with columns headed things like location, brand, item, price etc. In addition, each item in the table is, for some reason, marked as a heading level 3. I can stop the readout of the heading messages by temporarily shutting off the reporting of headings in the nvda settings for elements grouping. Have a look under the document formating section /menu then go down to tables and uncheck that box it will stop that. It will just read as normal. I think it is in the beta release you can use a gesture to turn it on and off when required if set. Maybe it could of been in there earlier. Gene nz
