Re: Excel Dropdowns (i.e., submenu) - NVDA stops speaking after exiting these

Hi Jujube and Gene,
Thank you, Jujube, for your response. When I checked the "use UI automation with Excel," it did fix the issue that I described where NVDA stopped talking after choosing an item from a dropdown. Unfortunately, after I checked this checkbox, NVDA stopped reading column titles that I had defined using Excel's define name feature. I also could not press NVDA + Shift + C to set column titles or NVDA + Shift + R to set row titles. It just typed a C or R in the cell.

Hi Nevzat
The issue in this document may be related to proofing language settings. Try the following to resolve:
The synthesiser should now stay in that language throughout the document.
Note that these instructions are for Microsoft 365. I think the Review ribbon might be a slightly different layout in earlier versions, but you’re still looking for “Set proofing language”.
All the best!

Hi group,
Recently I added additional languages by going to the control panel and French was one of them. I am doing work on a MS Word form and NVDA speaks french although my choice in both NVDA and the language choice under Control Panel is English. The strange thing is that when I opened another Word document, not a form, and typed sentences the result was in English. I went back to languages under Control Panel and removed French. But nothing changed. I still hear French in my MS Word form. I would like to hear your take on this phenomenon and your ideas how to put it right. Thanking you in advance for your contributions. Re: Excel Dropdowns (i.e., submenu) - NVDA stops speaking after exiting these
Jujube
Hi, you can try going into NVDA's advanced settings (press NVDA control g, shift tab to the list of categories and press a for advanced), accept the warning and check "use UI automation with Excel" and see if that does anything. NVDA and Office 365 are not a dream team yet, UI automation will be the future for Office 365 users but there are still a number of bugs to sort out which is why UIA is not enabled by default for now. Hope this helps.

Excel Dropdowns (i.e., submenu) - NVDA stops speaking after exiting these
Heather Campbell
Hello everyone, I'm experiencing an issue when using NVDA 2021.2 to interact with dropdowns/submenus in an Excel file (Office 365). I can press Alt + Down Arrow to expand the list, Down Arrow to the desired option, and then press Enter. However, if I then try to navigate in the sheet, NVDA stops talking. If I Alt + Tab to a different window and then Alt + Tab back to the Excel file, NVDA starts speaking again. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Are there any work arounds? I'm using Windows 10, version 21H1. Thank you! Heather

Re: Controlling my desktop with NVDA remote from my laptop
Chris Mullins
Hi Below is a link to a site giving details of alternative NVDA Remote relay servers, so you could set the Host to the one nearest your location to reduce any lag in the connection.
https://nvra.io/
It is advisable to ensure you use the same keyboard layout on both machines.
The settings in the Connect dialog for the machines should be:
1st Control: Client (on both machines) 2nd Control: Laptop= “Control another machine”, Desktop=”Allow machine to be Controlled” Host: nvdaremote.com or closer relay server Key: Same key on both machines Tab to OK and press enter.
Just because NVDA Remote connects to the relay server, does not necessarily mean the two computers can connect because there may be errors in the connection details. The details given above, if followed correctly, should ensure you can successfully connect your computers.
On the Desktop computer, press NVDA+n followed by t, e, o to open the Remote Options menu and ensure “Auto connect to control server” is checked, then exit this menu. Press NVDA+Control+n to restart NVDA and ensure the remote connection takes place. You can verify this by pressing NVDA+n followed by t, e. If the connect option at the top of the menu is unavailable, you have connected to the remote server.
Cheers Chris

Hello, I’m having problems connecting to my desktop from my laptop using NVDA remote. On my desktop, to set everything up I went to the NVDA menu, tools, remote, options, checked auto connect to server on STARZ up, use remote control server radio button, allow this machine to be controlled radio button. Then I created my host: Saylor‘s desktop, then created my key. On my laptop, I went to NVDA menu, tools, remote, connect, client, control a remote machine. I entered the host: Saylor‘s desktop, then my key and I get an error unable to connect to the remote computer. How long does my key have to because it is six digits. I also just tried putting in the host nvdaremote.com and then my key which would then connect however, once I pressed F11 and then it is controlling the remote machine, I can’t really control it because I tried to press the windows key and arrow keys and nothing. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks David, I am a relatively new user of nvda. Its really good to know there are people willing to help out there. You may remember My first concern was some months ago, using a braille display with nvda and Thanks to others I produced a guide and was happy to pass it on to other users of nvda. So thanks to you for guiding me in the right direction but also to rich for providing the assistance so quickly. Kind regards, Dennis huckle.

Richard, I won’t stop you from explaining the procedure if that’s what you want to do. However, section 12.4 of the NVDA users guide documents this feature. This is true in beta 1 of version 2021.3. Press the NVDA key with the letter N to open the manual, then go to the Help submenu where the user guide is located.

Hello all, I may have asked this before but forgive if this is a repeat broadcast!. On one of my desktop pcs I use k1000 for scanning documents. I realise, of course I can press caps lock and s to turn speech off but is there a way of making me a lazy old man and get speech to turn off automatically when using k1000 then turning it off when closing the program. Kind regards, Dennis huckle.

Running NVDA 2020.4. I'm have trouble getting my Code Factory add-on to work again. My notes may be out of date so hopefully someone here can assist. Re: ssl error with nvda update and nvda remote add-on

Hi Quentin,
Using 2021.3 beta 1 if you encounter a link in an outlook message, the up or down arrows seem to get stuck. This is with Office 2016. Can someone else verify before we log a bug? The work around at this stage is to press the tab key which seems to get you out of the link.
Thanks.

The add-on should still work, but it's probably easiest now to simply recommend installing the beta - because of our continuous alpha branch which seems well tested by a number of users, the beta version is generally pretty stable - and of course if there IS an issue, then it's important we find out about it (and once you run it and check for updates, the SSL error should be fixed so even if you needed to revert to 2021.2, the check for updates bug at least should be fixed.
