Re: Is the Windows 10 (and, I'd presume, 11) Sandbox Feature Accessible?

Hi,

Regarding keyboard shortcuts, it will feel like logging onto a Remote Desktop session - you would press Control+Alt+Break (Pause) key to switch between host (the computer you are using) and guest (sandboxed environment). The way I run NVDA (or for that matter, any screen reader other than Narrator) inside Windows Sandbox is:

  1. On the host computer, prepare the screen reader files - NVDA installer or a portable copy of NVDA.
  2. Copy the screen reader file(s) to the clipboard.
  3. Go to Windows Sandbox and switch to the guest environment.
  4. Open a folder location (say, Documents). The easiest way is typing the name of the folder from Run dialog.
  5. When the desired folder opens in the guest environment, paste the just copied scren reader file(s).
  6. Because it will take time for files to be copied (especially if you are copying a folder containing portable NVDA files), switch out of sandboxed environment, then use Windows OCR (NVDA+R) to recognize what Windows Sandbox is displaying.
  7. Once the copy operation is complete, switch back to the sandboxed environment, locate NVDA executable and run it.

You can also do all these with Narrator on - just before opening the folder in the guest environment (just after performing step 3), press Control+Windows+Enter while switched to the guest environment to start Narrator inside the sandbox. When NVDA starts, close Narrator.

I belive Windows Sandbox was covered somewhat on WinAccess forum (may need to check the archive for that one).

Cheers,

Joseph

Lukasz,

That was very helpful indeed.

I doubt that anything more could be said about how one goes about gaining accessibility inside Windows Sandbox.  I don't use it, and it is clearly a VM-ish sort of environment, but it behaves even more like a true VM than I had suspected.  It appears you get a perfectly "clean slate" on invocation and must do any necessary setup each time.

Since it is a separate Windows instance it is necessary to start a
screen reader inside Sandbox so first Narrator with an appropriate key
combination and then if desired you can install NVDA as you would on a
fresh installation of Windows.

Is the Windows 10 (and, I'd presume, 11) Sandbox Feature Accessible?

Since the question of whether it's accessible with NVDA, or any screen reader really, is on-topic for this group, I thought I'd post that here hoping that a definitive yes/no answer might be forthcoming.

If further discussion about how one actually uses the Windows Sandbox is desired, then please continue that on the Chat Subgroup in the topic, Sandbox Feature of Windows.

Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask. No,  it isn’t free. Yes, it does work with NVDA. However, someone can better answer you on that. I don’t use it.  I think that program has a free 30 day trial. I could be lying. If you try it. You can’t use all its features until you pay.  If there is a free trial I suggest you try it in the meantime before someone answers you.  If you do end up trying the free trial. You find it doesn’t work then get rid of it before your trial runs out.  You won’t loose the show.  If you find it does work then you can pay for it.

Hello there,

The only restriction that Reaper gives without you purchasing it is a window that you can close after four seconds on first start of the software per session that basically says that Reaper is not free, and that you should purchase it because that would help them greatly.

Except that, Reaper can be used without buying a license as far as I know, I am using it without a problem, and I’ve had it for more than a year.

I did give you the links so you could investigate for yourself...  There's a "download" link which tells you the evaluation lasts for 60 days and a purchase link which tells you that a license costs $60 for a personal license (and $225 for a commercial license).

I don't know the restrictions of the free version, but they do encourage you to download the free version first to ensure it meets your needs.  Do check it out and let us know what you think.

Hi.

Well

Just got the latest windows build

21.2 19.441387 build released today.

This had the windows installer fix.

I have however noticed a small issue which isn't an issue as such

because I can get round it easy enough.

Its just when I select the first item in the start menu ie hitting down

arrow from search I get all apps, then you get the programs starting

with punctuation like & or *, etc well that group does not read but the

items in it do and can be executed.

When colapsing a group it seems I get jumpped back to the top of the

list as well.

Again not a real big huge issue since I mostly search anyway but just

wandered if anyone has noticed.

I have not had any other issues in fact things seem a bit more stable,

but we will see what happens after I do some more shell work.

Re: Status Bars and NVDA

I agree with Gene. In addition to his points, status bars don't work well on mobile phones, and so applications available for both PC and mobile phones tend to not have status bars.

I’m not saying that there are no programs with status bars higher on the screen so NVDA isn’t aware of them but the trend you are talking about means that fewer programs have status lines.

Dear all,
I am using NVDA 2021.3 Beta 2 on a Windows 10 machine. To my
knowledge, back in the day at least, I thought status bars were
incredibly common and present in most applications. I had a bunch of
programs open and decided to issue the read status bar command
(NVDA+Shift+End on a laptop) to see what happened. The results are
below:
* Wordpad: "No status line found"
* Windows Explorer: "No status line found"
* Stata: "j"
* Microsoft Edge: "No status line found"
* Word for Microsoft 365: "Status Bar Page Number Page 2 of 32 Word
Count 2728 words Spelling and Grammar Check Errors Text Predictions
Text Predictions: On Accessibility Checker Accessibility: Investigate
Focus Read Mode Print Layout Web Layout Zoom Out Zoom 160 Zoom In
Zoom 160%" after a 2.5 second delay
* Wordweb: "wordweb.info"
In this experiment, most programs gave no valuable information. In the
one program that did have a meaningful status bar, NVDA took a solid
2.5 seconds to read it. Are status bars truly becoming obsolete? Or
does this hint at an issue in NVDA's read status bar command?
I would appreciate any thoughts and inputs.

Re: Rearrange Pinned Items

The only way I know of to rearrange icons on the taskbar prior to Windows 11 is drag and drop.  And, yes, in theory you can do it with a screen reader, sans add-ons, with emulated drag and drop, but I, and many others, have found that method lacking.

Javi Dominguez has written an add-on for Drag and Drop, which others have said is very helpful.

In the case of the taskbar, icon movement is constrained and they can only be moved right or left with real drag and drop, so you can use the mouse itself since the drop zone is not random. I know I've written about this in detail, but I think it was on the Windows Access for Screen Reader User's group, as this is not NVDA specific in any meaningful sense, and neither is rearranging icons on the taskbar, which is pretty much the same regardless of the screen reader in use, though add-ons/scripts can help where available.

HI all,

After going through the troubleshooting steps, I find out more about the Whatsapp add-on as follows:

1. The keystroke Control + Shift + T only works when my focus is on the message list.

2. When I press Control + Tab or Control + Shift + Tab to move among the chat list, I do not hear the chat that is highlighted. It would be very helpful if such information can be voiced out.

Once again, using the Whatsapp add-on is a joy on a whole.

Not that I'm aware of.  I always used the technique that Eduardo mentions.

I need to check if there's a GitHub ticket about making it such that if you've started NVDA with Add-Ons Disabled that Add-On Manager would offer you a way to selectively re-enable one or more during that session.  There could be a very good reason this functionality doesn't exist, or it could be that it's never been asked for.

It would be very handy to replicate what's called a clean boot process under Windows, where you "eliminate by halves"  and keep re-enabling in chunks until something breaks again.

Rearrange Pinned Items

Hey Brian and others?
I thought as far back as Windows 7 you could pin then rearrange icons on the taskbar either with the mouse or MouseKeys.
Although NVDA's GoldenCursor add-on might be helpful here, too.
