In addition to Rui's question, is NVDA actually running when you do this?

I've received this error on a couple of occasions where I double-clicked on an NVDA add-on file when I didn't have NVDA running.

I realize that this is not likely to be your situation, but because it is within the realm of possibility, I had to ask.

Hi. Using a portable copy means also living with the limitations of running portable NVDA, specially that NVDA needs to be run manually by each user who needs it. Lets see if @Quentin would give his 2 cents on this.

Agreed.  I taught my parents how to turn off my speech and turn it back on. it doesn't really matter anymore.

rofl I have had family need to use  computers of mine before and honestly if they can't deal with speech at log on they can just not use my stuff. It's not that big of a deal.

And to be honest if you were working you wouldn't want that happening if you had shhared computers with the sighted.

No one wants that to have speech on login or anything.

In fact when I have speech running even at home or on another computer, People get annoyed because they want me to close it, or say, I had to reset the computer because it was talking to me so sightlings don't appreciate blindy software running on their system at any time so having it on login, just not a real option if its shared.

Well, if you want to use it on the Windows login screen, it must start before you (or anyone) is logged in.  Every screen reader I know of has the option to do this, and it is an exception behavior, as most programs don't have the capability.

It can, of course, be toggled off in settings if you inadvertently turned it on.

Big picture, you're right.  But it's not that simple, and you know it.

Each and every one of us is used to what we're used to, and very few of us who don't have either a blind loved one or coworker have ever, even once, been in front of a computer with a screen reader, period, let alone one that's active on a login screen.

It's not that a sighted person can't, or won't, adjust, it's just that the first time you encounter this you are a bit like the proverbial deer in the headlights, frozen and not quite knowing what to do.  And that's where the biggest problem lies for a shared computer outside the home in that you'll be running into this issue again and again and again if there are enough occasional sighted users sitting down to use the machine for the first time.

I don't know of a single sighted user in a mixed environment who cannot adjust to a screen reader being on, and even learning how to turn it off.  But if you've never been in a mixed environment, and many haven't, it's utterly unrealistic to believe that "the sighted are a problem here" because they're reacting as many of us naturally do when confronted with something "alien" for the first time in their lives.  They have no idea of what to do, or how, nor should they.

I think a very great many on these blind-tech groups forget just how small a minority you are, and in the big picture that matters whether you want it to or not, and particularly in an instance such as this one.  There are never going to be anything near to a majority of people in the world who have ever, even once, encountered an assistive technology of any sort.  And they're almost always going to be flummoxed when they do for the first time.  One of the proverbial crosses you must bear is the constant need to educate when this occurs.

Hi everyone,

I don't really care what information is on the lock screen. My main concern is the appearance of the accessibility options. I also find it strange that the NVDA desktop copy seems to start before I'm logged in.

Hi

The information you see on the lock screen is controlled through the Personalization sub-menu in the Settings app. (Windows+I).  Arrow down the list of categories after opening the Personalization sub-menu and press enter on “Lock Screen”.  You can choose what to display in the controls on this screen.  When my lock screen opens after start-up, I just press control and that puts me in the Pin number box and after entering that, my NVDA user profile loads..
