Actually if you interact with each object you can read descriptions etc. I will take a look later and see what I come up with.

Hi. I know about object navigation and tabbing around that do work, however a lot of the content that's not a form field gets lost. reading discription or anything textual is hard.

Re: NVDA with Windows Mail
Chris Mullins
Hi It’s more a way of how you access the folder list in Windows Mail. You can jump to the folder list (from almost any location within the Mail app except when editing a message) by pressing Control+y, use down/up arrows to navigate the folder list then press enter on the folder you want to view the contents of. NVDA announces "Loading" and the messages in the chosen folder populate the list control. The load time taken and quantity of messages loaded is determined by what you have selected in the Mail Settings , Manage Accounts, Change Mailbox Synch Settings dialog. My setting loads the last month of messages and I usually wait a few seconds, then press shift+tab to move focus to the message list.

Hello all, As a new Lerner of NVDA , I would like to know if there is an NVDA command to jump directly to the message list from a folder. Right now, I am tabbing through several controls before landing on the message list. Is there a better way
Also, On a more generic level, is it necessary to know if you are in browse mode or focus mode? If so, under what circumstances?
Thank you.

Re: microsoft store and virtual cursor
Hi, Ah, you have Store version 2, which did change the interface from Store 1 (older Windows 10 releases). One workaround is using ObjPad add-on/scan mode emulation (note that ObjPad add-on is not supported). Cheers, Joseph

Do you have any recommendation for a ‘clear’ voice under which which speech synthesizer would possibly help me. ?- Actually, I don't. The reason for that being that the exact nature of your hearing loss is what's going to dictate what is a clear voice to you. I love Microsoft David, even with a slight high-frequency loss, but clearly he doesn't work for you. There are a wide number of OneCore voices in English that are not American accents, but that still might be better for you. Since you say you're having an issue with consonants that strongly suggests that your high frequency loss is at play here, so choosing voices where there's more "punch" in that range is probably a good idea. And that likely means trying out the various female voices. You can easily add voices under Windows 10 (and, likely, the same way in 11) in Settings, Time & Language, Language Pane with the Add a language button. The voices for English for the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK all have text-to-speech capability. I'd try adding those and then trying out the various voices to see which one, if any, suits you better than David does. Only you can ultimately make the determination of what is clear to your ears. Also, if your hearing aids have Bluetooth capability, I'd strongly suggest you exploit that by pairing them with your Windows machine and using them as your primary audio output. I can hear so very much better when the sound is being fed straight into my ears via my aids than I can when they are amplifying the output of the computer speaker. You can also, possibly, consult with your audiologist if you have programmable aids to create a program specifically for listening to computer speech that would exaggerate what you need exaggerated to gain clarity when using it, but that could be turned off when you are not in that listening environment. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 The difference between a top-flight creative man and the hack is his ability to express powerful meanings indirectly. ~ Vance Packard

Hi, Have you tried some of the other OneCore voices including Zira or mark? They may or may not sound better to you. Otherwise, you could try the Eloquence/Vocalizer addon and see if any of that stuff suits you better. It costs money though, but you can trial it for a weekb before buying. Also, how fast is your speech rate? If you use faster speech rates, most of the other OneCore voices sound significantly better at high speech rates than David, as well as Eloquence and possibly some of the Vocalizer voices. Hope this helps.

On Wed, Dec 1, 2021 at 10:42 AM, Mani Iyer wrote:
On a more generic level, is it necessary to know if you are in browse mode or focus mode? If so, under what circumstances?- Well, it certainly can be, if you accidentally shift from one to the other when you want to be in whatever one you're not in. NVDA, like JAWS and other screen readers, auto switches between the modes, particularly when browsing the web, as you land on things that require you to be in one mode or the other to use them as they're generally intended to be used. Focus mode is what's commonly necessary for any field that requires data entry. Browse mode is most common otherwise, where you want something read, but you're not able to interact with it otherwise. You can toggle between browse and focus modes with NVDA + Spacebar, and there is a sound associated with each, and I won't attempt to describe them, as it's easier just to land in a fillable field, where you should automatically get the "typewriter-ish" sound for focus mode when you land in it, and if you hit NVDA + Spacebar, you'll get the sound that indicates browse mode is back on again while you are still sitting in that edit box. You can also hit Escape if you have been auto-switched to focus mode to toggle back to browse mode. It's difficult to come up with any generic example of where you might need to manually toggle between browse and focus modes, but they do exist. I despise the Windows 10 Mail client myself, so I can't be of any real help there. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 The difference between a top-flight creative man and the hack is his ability to express powerful meanings indirectly. ~ Vance Packard

Re: loss of hot keys
I had forgotten the prior disussions of this issue which had made it clear that this was believed to be a "software key sticking" rather than the more typical hardware key sticking.
Unfortunately, this is something that's extremely difficult to tease out the root cause of, particularly if it cannot be reliably replicated. And given the number of layers involved between Windows, the screen reader(s), and the programs being accessed with them the "sticking point" could be coming about by a very specific confluence of events that just doesn't happen often at all, and that no one has ever figured out how to intentionally trigger. Computer bugs really can't be solved if you can't find a way to make them reliably occur. Without that, you can't trace the code path or paths being taken and where the issue finally shows itself. The old programmers wry joke phrase, "That's not a bug, it's a feature," has its roots in situations like this. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 The difference between a top-flight creative man and the hack is his ability to express powerful meanings indirectly. ~ Vance Packard

Re: loss of hot keys
The problem is I have sticky keys disabled. I really do think it has something to do with the keyboard hook in wx python as we had this problem in a program someone is coding. I can’t remember how they fixed it, I think we used a different keyboard hook.

This affects built in keyboards as well and directly connected ones. I don’t know what causes it but it has something to do with NVDA and was referred to years ago when JAWS had the problem as sticky keys. I don’t use JAWS now and I don’t know if it ever happens.

Given how cheap fully functional USB wired external keyboards are at most thrift shops, it's worth having one on hand for testing purposes. Of course if it's a laptop key that's stuck, and you can't unstick it, an external keyboard will still misbehave since the computer will accept input from all connected keyboards.
