Reading epub files in balabolka itself may not be a good option.  I don’t know about other browsers, but read to end or say all, I believe is the actual term used  by NVDA developers, stops at the end of each paragraph.  You can have the program read itself, using MSAPI voices but if you don’t have one you like, you won’t be satisfied.  Plus, you lose all the screen-reader dictionary entries you have made when using the program to read.

I use QRead myself, but lots of people don't like it because the author
will abandon things for long periods of time. Still, for me, it works
pretty well, I haven't found another program that reads all of the
formats it does. But you do have other options. Edge can read .EPUB
files, I'm pretty sure, and lots of things can read PDFs nowadays, most
browsers for example. If they won't come up as text you'll have to OCR
them with something anyway, in order to read them.

I've never gotten Calibre to do much of anything. Personally I wouldn't
restrict myself to something like the iPhone, not only because I don't
own one, but also because then you're stuck with whatever Apple has.
There are lots of books that aren't in Apple's format.

Another option you didn't mention is Kindle for PC. This is accessible
and works well with NVDA, so much so that I signed up for Kindle
unlimited. There's also Bookshare, and NLS if you're in the US, or
whatever library service you've got in your country, in case you're not
hooked up with something like that.

Re: eBook Readers with NVDA

I forget the software, but I have an ebook converter that uses calibre and which  I use for epub books but I can't remember what it is.

Next, yeah balabolka and adobe reader can read pdfs well enough.

As for text and the rest well they work.

Next one other option no one mentioned is the dolphin easyreader.

For those using dolphin products the damn thing is free if you have payed for 1.

If not the universal is only 65 bucks.

I haven't read epubs for a bit but they are hardly inaccessible.

Your simple daisy reader should read them.

And any portable daisy or supported player will read them.

I don't read enough to subscribe to scribbed but aparently you can write there to.

Another thing to mention though I have never done this, is that if you buy kindle books your alexa enabled device can aparently read them to you.

Hi. Need to fill out a reference work for a job interview, and the form came as a fillable pdf. What's the most accessible way to handle these? Adobe Reader DC seems to do ok, but doesn't seem to highlight or focus fields properly. Any thoughts or recommendations? Edge and Chrome both just open the file without giving me options to edit it, obviously. thanks.

Makes sence, like when a weapon jams, or did back in the 1800s. I’ll have to consult my oxford dictionary then. Anyway I’ll shove off now. Looks like the jam is fixed though, which is good.

Re: errors with RC

Quentin Christensen

Sometimes there is :)  And there are different levels of logging.  The default "info" level gives information particularly about errors which occur, and there are higher levels which record more information (which we only recommend setting when testing or capturing information - eg if you could give me the same log but at "debug" level, it would show what keystrokes you had pressed during that time, and what NVDA had spoken, which would possibly be enough to work out what you were doing.

If sending particularly a debug level log, do send it to me offlist, just because of the risk of it capturing anything sensitive.

Kind regards

Hi everyone,

The Release Candidate (RC) of NVDA 2021.3 is now available for download and testing. We encourage all users to download this RC and provide feedback. Unless any critical bugs are found, this will be identical to the final 2021.3 release.

Highlights

This release introduces support for the new HID Braille specification. This specification aims to standardize support for Braille Displays without needing individual drivers. There are updates to eSpeak-NG and LibLouis, including new Russian and Tshivenda tables. Error sounds can be enabled in stable builds of NVDA via a new advanced settings option. Say all in Word now scrolls the view to keep the current position visible. There are lots of improvements when using Office with UIA. One UIA fix is that Outlook now ignores more types of layout tables in messages.
Changes from Beta 2:

- Restored reporting of backspaced characters in Visual Studio editor
- Updates to translations.

Oh sorry. I assumed wrongly that there would be enough information in the log.

I can’t get them to happen right now but if they do, I’ll do a better job explaining what I was doing at the time.

Ok well that's something :)  If you can pinpoint something which causes the errors to happen, please let me know so we can investigate further.

Kind regards

Aside from the errors in the log, did you notice anything when they happened?

Subject: [nvda] NVDA 2021.3 RC 1 is available

Re: Recommendations for NVDA voice

Gene

If you haven’t, you might want to try the default English voice as well.  I haven’t used most of the variants and dialects in E-Speak because I don’t like the voice.  But I wanted to discuss it because I didn’t know if you had tried it and it might be worth trying.

Gene,
I agree the speak voices lack the body and do sound harsh, although I have to admit I did not seriously give all the English American voices a spin.  I will do that soon.

Thanks,

One voice that hasn’t been discussed, though it may have been mentioned, is E-Speak.  It comes with NVDA, but you have to switch to it if you are using Windows 10 and 11.  While I find it harsh and lacking in body, you may find that it is easier to understand than some or many others.

Not knowing about the nature of your hearing loss, I’m not recommending it, just pointing out that it may be more understandable and that it is a part of NVDA.

If you don’t know how to switch to it and try different  e-Speak voices, list members will tell you.
