Re: a problem with speech dictionaries again.

I'm not at my computer right now (I'm backstage, managing props) but do you have any entries in your dictionary priot to that one that match any part of it and substitute something else?

More later, but that is something to check.

Re: counting page and word on libra office.

There is however a not entirely satisfactory work around to this problem possibly available from NVDA itself.

When in a Word document, if you select all (control A) NVDA will tell you how many key-strokes are in the document and if you divide that by 6 you will get a fairly precise estimate of the number of words. I think the document (or chunk of text selected) has to be over 1000 keystrokes (about 167 words) for the figure to be announced. I assume the same keystroke announcement is made in Libra Office Writer although I have never used it.

Of course it doesn’t help much with page numbers.

Best wishes

It is only appropriate insofar as it's accessibility with NVDA, which has been covered.

The commands to use any feature of Libre Office, Microsoft Office, or any program are not about NVDA, nor any screen reader for that matter.  They're about the program the screen reader is being used to access.

That being the case, it's not on-topic for the main NVDA group.  The Chat Subgroup is perfectly appropriate for questions regarding any software being used with NVDA.  There is also a Libre Office Accessibility group but I don't seem to have the addresses where I can easily find them.

If I knew the commands for word and page count in Libre Office I would have included them here, but I don't.  But any discussion of Libre Office programs and their functions is not on-topic for the NVDA main group.

Hi Gene,

I thought about that and did check it and triple checked it.

This occurs in the subject of emails from the blind tech mailing list.  I looked and it is showing up exactly as I typed it.  I checked the case of letters, made sure there weren't spaces in the string and other things.

The other instances of bracketed strings I have entries for are from other mailing lists and they work perfectly but this one does not.

Thanks.

I have tried adding a dictionary entry for "[blind-t]" and gave "blind tech" as the replacement string.  I have added this to the default and the voice dictionaries.  NVDA still pronounces "[blind-t]" as though it doesn't see my dictionary entries.

I also set case sensitivity to unchecked and type to anywhere and whole word.

I am running the latest RC and am running Windows [Version 10.0.19043.1348].

Any ideas why NVDA won't recognize that I have a dictionary entry for this?

Thanks.

Out of interest, have you had win10 installed on that Asus and, if so, did it happen then too? I ask because I have a 17-inch Asus gaming laptop running Win10, and it has always done this for me, much to my annoyance! I don't get it as frequently as you do, maybe once every 20 minutes or so. I get it when I'm listening to an album of music using WinAmp, when at some random point all of a sudden, NVDA will read the winAmp title bar! I get it when watching The Chase quiz show in Chrome browser, and I get it if I leave my computer to do something else!

I did ask about this in this group once before, and was advised to turn the logging level up and send a private message with the NVDA log, but I didn't know how to send it! I did save a log, and scoured it for any likely triggers, but nothing seemed suspicious.
It does sound like it is something in the Asus system that is causing this, and it would make me think carefully about buying another Asus laptop, even though I have loved mine otherwise.

I really like the bookworm interface, but the problem is sometimes it skips pages when I'm reading with read all command, and for me that is not acceptable. However, if it has been solved from the last time that I used the program, I think is really a good option.

An other option is a spanish program called ebookreader, is not translated to english as I know, but is easy to use.

Hello all and thanks for reading this.

I'm using the last stable of NVDA under Windows 11.
The PC is an Asus Vivobook Pro 15.

The issue appeared after upgrading to Win11.

Here it is:

When I left the computer for some time, I mean 2 minutes or so, NVDA start speaking like someone has press NVDA + Tab.
So, it repeat the item where it is focused on.

Most effective is on Thunderbird. Before, when I had Windows 10, I often leave the PC when I had something to do and NVDA stays on one mail message on the received folder untill the screen saver or locking window pops up.
Now, I couldn't do it any longer because every 2 minutes or so, it repeats the mail header where it is on and, believe me, it is very very annoying.

So, I had to go to the desktop and leave the NVDA's focus over an icon, before leaving my sit but, less often, NVDA says the icon's name like a parrot, every 2 or 3 minutes.

I don't have any idea on how to fix it.I didn't touch any screen controls, refresh rate or something similar.

Could you help me please?

Thanks a lot.

Gabe.

True, actually you can access things like that using the start menu’s search function. If you type goog, you will fine google chrome in programs. Or even more parameters. It’s actually quite neato.

But if you use first letter navigation, why does that matter?  I directly move to almost nothing on the desktop.  And actually, you can get to something even faster by typing more than just the first letter.  If I want to move to something like NVDA, if I type nv, I’ll move right there.  I don’t have to press n a number of times, depending on where I am on the desktop if I have many other items beginning with n and a different second letter.

In addition, most of what I use desktop shortcuts for is with short cut keys so I don’t even have to move to them.

I may not have shortcut commands for things I don’t use often.  I use Google Chrome but not often.  If I type go or gog I can move there immediately and press enter.

Yeah I actually for me have that turned off, so nvda for me is not on my desktop. Many people though for what ever reason leave desktop short cuts on and that will in time create a lot of clutter, unless   you take time to organize your desktop into folders for easier browsing. It took me 20 years of learning com putters to realise this, last year?

True but as far as I know, NVDA places the shortcut on the desktop so I discussed finding it there.

Also, in response to another message, I said that people would be willing to show how to create a shortcut command and that was not repetitious of other content.  One message said to do so in properties but didn’t explain how.

There is no setting.  Short cuts and the shortcut commands such as control alt n are Windows functions.  NVDA creates a short cut and a short cut key when you install it but what it creates is a Windows shortcut and a Windows short cut key.

Go to the desktop and type n repeatedly.  Do you get to an NVDA shortcut?  Do you know how to check if there is a shortcut key assigned to the NVDA shortcut if you get to one? We will tell you how if you don’t know.

Re: Strange issue with Win11 (screen refreshing)

This sounds like an extremely convoluted and complex means to deal with what may be a very simple problem.  I would wait for other discussion.  And a very simple work around for now is to just turn off speech when you are away from the computer.  Maybe something is causing the screen to flash or do something that makes the screen-reader see something it repeats.  I would ask a sighted person what is seen.  It may just be a question of turning off the screen saver.  It is recommended that sscreen savers not be used with screen-readers.

Hmph.
Not sure.
Something could be in the background.
Could be something got mangled.
Do a backup of everything then do the following.
1.  go to your manufacturer's website.
If the system is intel, get and install the latest intel chipset and intel dch.
I realise the licence aggreement may have to be read by a sightling <sigh>
I know that stinks but Yeah I need to do this shabang and its totally
bonkas but oh well.
Load the latest drivers if its intel driver assistant will help you.
If the system is amd run the stable amd autoupdate and get the latest
drivers installed.
Not sure what the latest stable driver is as I always run the latest
public game ready but the latest isn't ever hql complient unless its a
recommended so you may have more screwups and to be honest I just do
it for no reason even though 99.9% of the updates have no baring on me
as a user.
The chipsets should be from october 21 and should be installed.
So the next things I'd do is if you can and its support get and
install the latest well everything thats currently there, everything
from sound to usb, to whatever.
After that I'd concentrate on firmware for all your devices including bios.
That actually may all fix that issue right there.
I had the case of one of my hp systems not booting and a bios and
firmware update to various cpu and other components actually fixed it.

So firstly I'd run the firmware updates and then the display and other drivers.
If in doubt, I'd try a total reformat.
There may be something that just doesn't jell or never did.
For example I have an old 4th gen workstation.
It had cyberlink and a few other old software packages that worked
after upgrade so I thought well fine.
Last year my dad decided he had a slow system and wanted me to do the
old heave ho on it.
So, I pulled up the box, and did a full reformat.
I loaded the system, loaded the software.
Then drives stopped working.
I reformat again, reloaded the software thinking I had screwed things over.
Again after installing things again, things stopped working.
Thought it was bogus by this point.
So I decided to do the winamp approach.
Remove all the plugins except the core stuff then put in one file at a time.
Or in this case 1 program at a time.
Cut a long story really short, the old, dvd, and photo software that
we had used for the last 5 years was totally just not compatible.
I was able to get alternit software but could be that.
I also try to note down all my software I use and try to update it.
There are bits of software which I don't use much which I don't check
for updates so if it doesn't work then its probably not updated.
Failing all that and you don't need it, role back to 10.
There are a few users who seem to be scared about not much more being
done with 10 and moving fast as a racecar to 11.
While that may be true there is no real reason to really move to 11 right now.
And with how things have gone with 11 in some circles I don't see
myself moving to 11 unless I need to.
In fact all my pcs I get will always have 10 as an option.
At the end of 5 years, if microsoft then make a windows 12 its
possible I will skip windows 11 which some call another vista so who
knows.
If you can't be bothered with this, you could just turn sound off on
your box while away or turn off speech.
On my mechanical, I can mute and physically adjust volume from an
inset control panel on the board.

for updates so if it doesn't work then its probably not updated.

Hello all and thanks for reading this.

I'm using the last stable of NVDA under Windows 11.
The PC is an Asus Vivobook Pro 15.

The issue appeared after upgrading to Win11.

Here it is:

When I left the computer for some time, I mean 2 minutes or so, NVDA
start speaking like someone has press NVDA + Tab.
So, it repeat the item where it is focused on.

Most effective is on Thunderbird. Before, when I had Windows 10, I often
leave the PC when I had something to do and NVDA stays on one mail
message on the received folder untill the screen saver or locking window
pops up.
Now, I couldn't do it any longer because every 2 minutes or so, it
repeats the mail header where it is on and, believe me, it is very very
annoying.

So, I had to go to the desktop and leave the NVDA's focus over an icon,
before leaving my sit but, less often, NVDA says the icon's name like a
parrot, every 2 or 3 minutes.

I don't have any idea on how to fix it.I didn't touch any screen
controls, refresh rate or something similar.

Could you help me please?

Thanks a lot.

Gabe.
