Hi all,

I know you can press Insert and 5 twice on the num pad to hear words spelled out. What is the equivalent for somebody who does not have a num pad?

Thanks,

Since NVDA is open source, it's probably more up to the community to come up with an add-on for a given program.

Re: NVDA announcing Capital letters

David Griffith

This problem does not  appear to be existent with the Sapi versions of Eloquence.

I am using the Code Factory Sapi 5 Eloquence  to type this and there is no problem with capital announcement. Capitals are being indicated simply by increased pitch as expected.

Yesterday I was using the Kurzweil Sapi 4 version of Eloquence and again there was no  problem with simply hearing increased pitch to indicate capitals.

So this may be a problem confined to the Code Factory Addon versions?

I am constantly relieved that I did not go for the addon flavour given the multiple issues reported over the years with NVDA updates etc.

Hi,

This is a function, or problem with, certain synthesisers.

For example, if you use CodeFactory's NVDA Vocalizer add-on, and turn off all the capital options, it will still say Capital, because NVDA doesn't intercept the interpretation of the add-on itself.

JAWS has a feature called Controlled By Synthesiser, which you can switch off. If you do, JAWS does all the processing. Maybe NVDA needs something like this. Controlled By Synthesiser can be seen in punctuation settings I believe.

Re: NVDA announcing Capital letters

Steve Nutt

Hi Gene,

In my testing, you are right. It doesn't happen with Eloquence, but it does with Nuance Vocalizer.

This is because NVDA chucks an upper case character at it, and the synth interprets it correctly.

If you turn caps off completely, then NVDA should be chucking lower case letters at it when you type, then it would stop this happening.

I don't think that is true if you use Eloquence as provided by the add-on, at least when I tried the demo, I didn't have that problem. I don't like the other synthesizer, I don't recall its name, and I hardly played with it. I hope others will discuss whether I am correct because some who want to use eloquence as an add-on might be worried about that.

So, I tried unchecking the box that said, "Use spelling functionality when supported." Lo and behold, the voices said "capital" instead of spelling the word. So, in your case, try checking that box, if it isn't checked, and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

The check box is in the voice dialog of NVDA.  It is immediately before the OK button and immediately after the fields for adjusting how capital letters are indicated.

One of its functions is language map, which by default includes English and Russian IIRC. So it will force your synthesizer to switch languages whenever it sees text writte in Latin/Cyrillic. In theory it should work with any synth, but some synthesizers, or rather their NVDA drivers don't support some functionality.
I can confirm that it works well in Microsoft Speech API, Windows OneCore Voices and espeak. Used to work with RHVoice a couple of years ago but I haven't tested since then. And yeah, I tested specifically on Russian/English pair.

I have a Russian voice that I purchased some time ago from a 3rd party vendor, and it works with NVDA. However, there is one really serious problem with it. If you are on a page with mixed English and Cyrillic, the Russian voice really falls apart. Rather than just reading the English in a Russian accent, which is what happens on an iPhone, for instance, my speech synthesizer from the Ivona company pronounces the English in some way that is really quite impossible to understand. So I'm wondering if there is anybody on here who speaks Russian and has had occasion to download and use either of the MS voices for Windows 10. If these voices act like the one I already have, then there is no point in going there. But if they don't mangle the English because they use pronunciation rules, perhaps because the synth is from Poland, where they use the Latin alphabet and have their own phonetic rules, then I'm going to go through the process of installing the voices and hope for decent results.

I don't have "Use spelling functionality when supported." checked. What I want is to only hear a raise in pitch on capital letters. Again I don't have beep on caps checked or say caps on capitals checked. But with all those settings I still hear the word capital before each capital typed or when reviewing test.
