Re: NVDA announcing Capital letters

Gene

Here is a suggestion for those who don't want to hear cap spoken.  Try an NVDA speech dictionary entry for cap and place a space in the pronounced as field.  Be sure to select whole word or you won't hear cap wherever it appears.  Thus, Captain Kirk would be tain Kurk.

On a more general note, I don't understand the cause of the problem.  I would think that when a capital letter is found, NVDA sends instructions to the synthesizer such as raise voice, or actually sends the word cap to the synthesizer.  But turning off these options doesn't eliminate the word cap being spoken for some people and now one person says pitch isn't raised.

Yet, I wouldn't think the synthesizer would do something on its own like say cap if no information came from NVDA.  Perhaps someone with more technical knowledge might discuss what might be causing the problems.

Hello alexey,

I have also tested your new addon version in the meantime. However, it does not work for me. I don't get any message announced.
With the old version, the image recognition on the internet worked, i.e. it is probably due to the navigator object.
If anyone else has a tip on how the new version works, I would be very grateful!

Yes, this problem sometimes happens, just try a few times after a few minutes, or select a file where the size is smaller

Hello,
I perhaps am the only person that think that there is no need for packaging another addon for sound.

Infact we will have a copy of the Volume Adjustment addon... that allow both to modify NVDa volume and app volume, both split sound where you want. So, I prefer to have all in a single addon that make more things.

Hey Charlie,

i’m not sure about FL studio but I’ve never heard anything about it being screen reader accessible so my guess is it probably isn’t. Have you checked out Reaper? It is a digital audio workstation (DAW) application that is fully screen reader accessible. All you need to do is install Reaper and then install a couple of recommended Reaper extensions that expand its keyboard navigability etc. If you’re interested, let me know and I can hook you up with some resources on getting it set up. It works great!

One of its functions is language map, which by default includes English and Russian IIRC. So it will force your synthesizer to switch languages whenever it sees text writte in Latin/Cyrillic. In theory it should work with any synth, but some synthesizers, or rather their NVDA drivers don't support some functionality.

I can confirm that it works well in Microsoft Speech API, Windows OneCore Voices and espeak. Used to work with RHVoice a couple of years ago but I haven't tested since then. And yeah, I tested specifically on Russian/English pair.

If you are on a page with mixed English and Cyrillic, the Russian voice really falls apart. Rather than just reading the English in a Russian accent, which is what happens on an iPhone, for instance, my speech synthesizer from the Ivona company pronounces the English in some way that is really quite impossible to understand. So I'm wondering if there is anybody on here who speaks Russian and has had occasion to download and use either of the MS voices for Windows 10. If these voices act like the one I already have, then there is no point in going there. But if they don't mangle the English because they use pronunciation rules, perhaps because the synth is from Poland, where they use the Latin alphabet and have their own phonetic rules, then I'm going to go through the process of installing the voices and hope for decent results.

Hi David

The following might help from the user manual. I knew I had seen it some where about if you did not have a numeric keypad on your pc.

Note the part with the function key.

The lower the grid is on the main keyboard should be the characters previous, the letter you are on and the next.

Not sure how it is done but 7 could be previous line, 8 is current and 9 is next.

u could be previous word, I could be current word, and O could be next word,

j could be previous character, kcould be current character and l could be next.

Best bet have a play while holding down the function key. I used to have a netbook like that.

4.2.2. Keyboard Layouts
NVDA currently comes with two sets of key commands (known as keyboard layouts): the desktop layout and the laptop layout. By default, NVDA is set to use the Desktop layout, though you can switch to the Laptop layout in the Keyboard category of the NVDA Settings dialog, found under Preferences in the NVDA menu.
The Desktop layout makes heavy use of the numpad (with Num Lock off). Although most laptops do not have a physical numpad, some laptops can emulate one by holding down the FN key and pressing letters and numbers on the right-hand side of the keyboard (7, 8, 9, u, i, o, j, k, l, etc.). If your laptop cannot do this or does not allow you to turn Num Lock off, you may want to switch to the Laptop layout instead.

Hi,

My Husband, Marcus and I have been getting our Podcasts from the
Victor Stream and are running into issues with them not coming in
anymore. Web sites have shown that they have aired, but we're just not
getting them. Are there any Podcast apps that work with Windows 10 or
11 and are not tied to Apple? We use the latest version of NVDA, but
can also use the latest version of JAWS if accessibility is an issue
with the program.
