Re: Podcast app that works with Windows 10 or 11

Hi

I know one called Podcatcher, and I did an audio tutorial for this at https://youtu.be/oDzOLsIF-BE

This is a podcast client for blind user so I make sure it accessible to either Jaws or NVDA.

Hi,

My Husband, Marcus and I have been getting our Podcasts from the Victor Stream and are running into issues with them not coming in anymore. Web sites have shown that they have aired, but we're just not getting them. Are there any Podcast apps that work with Windows 10 or 11 and are not tied to Apple? We use the latest version of NVDA, but can also use the latest version of JAWS if accessibility is an issue with the program.

Re: NVDA announcing teams alerts

Hi Sharon and Sarah, what I did was exit NVDa while I was in a meeting. When I wanted out I would start it or Jaws to exit the meeting. I myself would just go into the settings and find all this out. I’ve used my I pad to go into a meeting and just double tap to turn off speech. I prefer using the I pad for those kinds of meetings. Each to their own.  If I use this computer I exit the screen reader so I do not hear so and so entered the room or left.  Same with the I phone. I just double tap and that turns off speech. I don’t know how you’d do it on a tablet that’s not apple.  Or google phone.

That would be nice! I can't really focus on the meeting while I hear "so and so joined' etc. I didn't see anything in settings, although I could have missed it.

Re: Vocalizer and Eloquence Add-Ons

The SAPI version isn't an add-on.  It will work with any program that supports SAPI.  Also, it is only for Eloquence.  The add-on provides both Eloquence and the Vocalizer synthesizers.

I won't name names for privacy reasons, although I can say that we have been getting ever increasing inquiries from organisations about using NVDA in their workplaces.

Given that the program is free, including in corporate environments, there really is no barrier to being able to use it, so that's helpful for a lot of people and companies.  We have a page at: https://www.nvaccess.org/corporate-government/ which answers a lot of the kinds of questions we get asked by organisations.

A few years ago, we were sometimes asked about whether open source software was safe.  As more IT managers now understand how open source works, we don't encounter that nearly so often but there is a section on that page dedicated to just that query - including links to a number of government and large corporate policies mandating the use of open source software first.

If anyone does work for an organisation with questions about NVDA, or would like some backup approaching organisations, do feel free to write to me offlist at info@....  (Or if you have general questions, feel free to ask here as if you have a question, chances are someone else does too).

Re: NVDA announcing Capital letters

Hello All,

I am asking, please, that responses to this topic stick to this title.  It's been split into 3 separate topics now, one accidental, or appearing so, one not.

From my earlier reading, some comments:

1. This isn't hair splitting, as I've learned the hard way:  NVDA doesn't say anything, the synthesizer you use with it does, and sometimes issues are directly driven by the synthesizer.  Trying a different one as a diagnostic step is always a good idea.

2. I have no idea why "Cap" would be announced when that option is off unless a synthesizer does this, which is unlikely, NVDA has a bug, also not particularly likely or this would be more widespread (though it's not impossible, either), or there could be some sort of idiosyncratic corruption in this specific NVDA installation.  I'd definitely try the diagnostic steps outlined in, Creating an Issue in GitHub for NVDA, whether or not you intend to open an issue.  You can learn a lot about what may possibly be at fault that way.

3. If nothing in the diagnostic steps cleared anything up, and the problem was still present when add-ons were disabled, I'd do a complete uninstall of NVDA followed by a reinstall using a freshly downloaded copy of the installer.  As was discussed over the last several days, uninstalling NVDA does not remove one's settings or add-ons, which are stored in a user's application data folder, not NVDA's install folder if "the usual configuration" is used, and you'd know if you tweaked install settings.  If you never have, then the usual configuration is in use.

Re: NVDA, & Orbit Question!

Greg Williams

Hi,

In case you have not found an answer elsewhere, press NVDA+n, down arrow to Preferences, expand by pressing the right arrow, and press enter on Settings. Down arrow to Braille and then tab through the settings or press alt+s to move to the Show Cursor checkbox; this is followed by a blink cursor checkbox and a cursor blink rate edit field as well as other options for the cursor.

Hope that helps,

Greg

I talked about using regular expressions.  I thought you had used the NVDA dictionary.  I hadn't noticed that you used the Vocalizer  settings in the add-on.  That setting area may not have any provision for working with regular expressions.  Maybe you have to do it the hard way.

Despite having say caps unchecked under the NVDA voice settings NVDA still says capital before each capital letter typed.
A solution is found under the settings for the code factory vocalizer settings.  Under the settings you can create a word list.  I added a entry for each letter having each capitalized leter replaced with the locer case letter.
Now all capitals are identified with only a pitch change as desired. Did not change any of the NVDA dictionaries.

I don't know how to work with regular expressions.  I would imagine that this could be done with a regular expression but others would have to discuss that.

Those with more technical knowledge may wish to discuss if what you found brings us closer to understanding why the problem exists.

Your comments may prompt someone to send to the list what you should enter in the speech dictionary.

Now when I type a Capital a I only hear the letter a at a raised pitch. Does this provide any reason for the problem of NVDA saying capital before each capital letter?  If this is a possible solution is there a way to do it besides making 26 entries in the default dictionary thus covering the entire alphabet?
