Re: can you disable the announcement of "in figure" o"out of figure"?
Jonathan COHN
I have been thinking about figures. Often when coded correctly, a screen reader will speak fairly much the same information 3 to 4 times on a figure.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
1. When the figure is encountered the figcaption might be a label for the figure so will be spoken when visiting the figure. 2. The omg will have an alt tag on New York Times and Washington Post I have noticed that the alt text of the image is nearly identical to the figcaption. 3. The figcaption is the visible text below the picture and descries the picture for the sighted. Maybe 4. Then the end of the figure is encountered. I’m not sure if NVDA and JAWS will also read the label at this point. Some possible improvements: 1. Ignore alt text in images if they are in a figure that is labeled with the same content as the figcaption. 2. Don’t read the figure label when the start/end tags are read if the label of the figure is the figcaption. 3. If there are options to not read start/end tags for articles and regions then allow figures to be treated the same way. (This might even mean a different behavior for Red all vs navigating through.) Re: NVDA Not Talking

That shouldn't be the initial setting. If it were, you would have to use another synthesizer to make it talk after installation. We would have seen no end of complaints from people who installed NVDA and had no speech if that were the case. You can check the speech setting with the command NVDA key s. Whether you have speech set to speak or none or beep, every time you issue the command, NVDA will talk. It will tell you what you are setting speech to. It will say speech mode off, speech mode beeps, or speech mode talk.

Re: How setting heading rows and columns in Excel, and reading of those by NVDA, works . . .

John,
Please ignore my previous message and its final typo! Here is what I really meant:
Your table looks fine.
Have you set these three parameters in Document configuration in the excel profile?:
Activate (Check) all of these items: Tables row/column headings Cell co-ordinates;
If those are all set, you should hear the column headings as described.

Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2022 2:44 AM To: nvda@nvda.groups.io Subject: Re: [nvda] Reading row or column headers in Excel, how does it work?
Thanks, everybody! I have a table like so:
A1: title a2: artist a3: album
If I go to A1 and hit NVDA-shift-c to set column headers, and then arrow down to A2, all is well, I hear Jalla Jalla, which is a track title, followed by A2. However, when I arrow right to B2, I hear Frigg B2. It is my understanding now, and thanks for the great explanation, that I *should* hear Frigg B2 artist.
I generated my table by making a CSV file from MP3Tag and then importing that file into Excel, and then saving the resulting worksheet, or workbook, or whatever it is. Could that be the problem? To check I hit ctrl-n to make a new thingy and did:
A1: stuff B1: more stuff C1: still more stuff
A2: 3 B2: 4 C2: 5
Arrowing down and then right just gave me 4 B2, rather than 4 B2 more stuff, which is what I'd expect from the explanation.

Steven, you could also try fire up something like narrator to see what is showing up when you then activate NVDA menu, and, there, maybe check what synthesizer is selected - NVDA + ctrl + S should bring up synthesizer dialogue, where you could try selecting another one, and, where you can also check selected audio output device?
Besides that, try hitting NVDA + ctrl + R to reset preferences to factory defaults?

Re: NVDA Not Talking
hurrikennyandopo ...
Hi
Sounds like you might not have nvda start when windows does after logging in to windows.
If that is the case use the alt key + ctrl key + the letter N. If you then hear a musical sound then it starts talking you will need to check under settings start nvda when windows starts or some thing like that under the general settings in nvda.
The other option thaht comes to mind is the synth you are using.
sorta makes it hard with no speech. If you know nvda is running but not talking use the ctrl key + nvda key + the letter S to bring up the synthesizer settings it might be set to no sppech? or a buggy synth.
If this is the case wile the synth settings is open use the letter E to get you up to E speak or W to get you to windows one core voices. If it speak correctly then tab down to the apply or ok button.
Hopefully that should do the trick.

Hi friends,
I Have installed the latest NVDA on my laptop. When I start up, there is speech at the logon screen but after logging on, there is nothing at all, no speech. During the installation, there was no speech either which seems quite odd. If I load up JAWS then I can use the NVDA+N and it would appear that NVDA is running. I Use NVDA+Q and JAWS will read the NVDA quit screen but again, there is no speech from NVDA itself. When I type, there is a high pitched sound for some reason until I unload NVDA. I Tried uninstalling NVDA and re-installing but the same thing seems to have happened afterwards. Does anyone have any ideas please?

will be speech once the computer has started. Both options need to be checked in 'Preferences > Settings > General'. Specifically: "Start NVDA after I sign in" needs to be checked.

Please help! I can't find the button to share my screen during Zoom meetings! I had no trouble doing this in the last two weeks, although I don’t recall the exact date when I last shared my screen.
I'm running the latest zoom under Windows 10 with NVDA. I have a Pro account, and I am the host of the meeting.
Before, I would simply press ALT+S and then specify what I wanted to share. But pressing ALT+S seems to do nothing now, and tabbing through the meeting controls does not take me to a Share Screen button.
I can't seem to find anything in my local settings or the meeting scheduling options that would affect screen sharing either. I'm stumped, and I am giving an important presentation in two days time to sighted people, demonstrating how I navigate a Website using a screenreader.
Any help gratefully received.
Chris P.S. I’ve also checked in Settings in both the Hotkeys and Accessibility categories, and nothing seems amiss there either.
