Re: NVDA Crashes on launch, log:OSError: [WinError 193]

This is a weird one.
Go here and see if you can run nvdaHelperRemoteLoader.exe:

C:\Program Files (x86)\NVDA\lib64\2021.3.1

What error do you get when you try that? That line of code is pointing at that file, and my hope is that even though it's not running under NVDA, we'll get a more useful error out of it.

Re: Keystroke for reading an Entire Row in Excel

Probably, as Robert suggested, it would read the headers only if they have been set.  It just occurred to me in thinking about the idea.  But if anyone has fleshed the idea out, and writes it up on GitHub, do let us know here.

Perhaps there could be an option in settings for this, that way the user could tailor it to their particular needs. There might be cases where you want that and others where you don’t.

There isn't currently a command for this.  Even Say All doesn't currently work in Excel - see this issue for that: https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/6624

The only way I can find, is to select the row (SHIFT+spacebar), copy it, then read the clipboard (NVDA+C).  If it is too long, you might need to paste into Notepad or somewhere.  Not ideal.

My suggestion would be to create an issue on GitHub for this, as it is definitely something which would be worthwhile.  One thing which would need to be considered, is whether the command should read column headers as it goes.  So, say you are reading row 7, and the headers are in Row 1, would you want it to read A7, B7, C7, D7, etc.  Or would you want it (with headers defined) to read A1, A7, B1, B7, C1, C7, D1, D7, etc.? (There could be arguments made either way).

Kind regards

There may be an add-on but there is no setting in the program. But of what good is it to not say blank. You will still have to down arrow through those lines anyway. There might be some benefit in creating the ability in the program or as an add-on to skip blank lines while down arrowing. Others may want to discuss if that would be useful. I generally use speak to end. I don't down arrow through text unless I have a reason to and I would experience little to no benefit from such an ability.

The SAPI synthesizer isn't an add-on.  it is intended for use with any program that supports SAPI5.

Hi

From the input so far on this issue, it sounds like the addon may interrogate the NVDA Voice property for “Say cap” and if it is not checked, it defaults to inserting the word “Capital” before processing an individual capital letter, otherwise NVDA takes responsib ility for indicating the capital letter.  This may also apply to Pitch Change and Bleep  as well but I have not seen any evidence that this is the case.

Hi,

It happens equally on the SAPI version of Vocalizer, I can tell you that.

And it is not, as Brian suggests, an isolated problem, it is easy to reproduce.

All the best

I don't know how much you might want to do to pursue the problem further.  One option, which will cost money, is to get the SAPI Vocalizer voices,  You may want to try the program to see if you have the same problem.

You can find it on this page:

https://www.atguys.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=60_20

There are the methods to try to correct the problem Brian discussed and then there is this possible solution that will cost you money.  But I'm making you aware of the option, if you aren't.  And you may want to test for the problem using the SAPI demo.

Re: How setting heading rows and columns in Excel, and reading of those by NVDA, works . . .

John Isige

Yeah, I've never had to mess with profiles before at all. So for instance, if I changed synth settings, and opened Excel let's say, they stuck. SO I guess I just assumed that the document formatting settings worked the same way. So I knew about profiles and all, just not this behavior. But it's actually doubly useful, because I'd only want the table behavior for something like Excel and not in NVDA generally. So thanks once again!

John,

It does look as though you have a profile for the Spreadsheet.

Press NVDA +control +p to see what profiles you have in your NVDA. There should be a “Normal” profile by default.

When you are on the  desktop, the Normal profile is active. Your column reading parameters would then be saved in the Normal profile.

If, as I suspect, you have the “Spreadsheet” profile, this will become active as soon as you open Excel.

When you set the parameters while outside Excel, the column reading parameters that you set up were saved in the Normal profile.

What you have done now that you have opened Excel, is to set the column reading settings in the Spreadsheet profile and that explains why they are now working whenever you open excel.

There is a detailed explanation of the profiles in the NVDA user manual. I recommend you read that and try setting up manual profiles and triggered ones just to see how they work.

Thanks, that did it! I had that set but I wonder if the problem was that I set it in the general configuration, i.e. in NVDA outside of Excel? I did apply and then save it, but I wonder if it didn't get carried over into the Excel profile? Well I set it up, saved the workbook, and hit ctrl-NVDA-c to save the current configuration while in Excel. Opening the workbook again works, so yay!

Have you set these three parameters in Document configuration in the excel profile?:

  1. Open an Excel worksheet to open the Excel profile;
  2. Press NVDA+Control+d for Document settings;
  3. Check all of these items:

   Cell co-ordinates;

  1. Press control+shift +r to set row headings.

If those are all set, you should hear the row headings as described.

Thanks, everybody! I have a table like so:

A1: title

a2: artist

a3: album

If I go to A1 and hit NVDA-shift-c to set column headers, and then arrow down to A2, all is well, I hear Jalla Jalla, which is a track title, followed by A2. However, when I arrow right to B2, I hear Frigg B2. It is my understanding now, and thanks for the great explanation, that I *should* hear Frigg B2 artist.

I generated my table by making a CSV file from MP3Tag and then importing that file into Excel, and then saving the resulting worksheet, or workbook, or whatever it is. Could that be the problem? To check I hit ctrl-n to make a new thingy and did:

A1: stuff

B1: more stuff

C1: still more stuff

A2: 3

B2: 4

C2: 5

Arrowing down and then right just gave me 4 B2, rather than 4 B2 more stuff, which is what I'd expect from the explanation.

One of the things that many have trouble wrapping their heads around, and I include myself, is that column headings reside in a ROW, and row headings reside in a COLUMN.  And, of course, depending on the format of the chart in question it may have only column headings (in one row) or row headings (in one column) but not both.

Cearbhall's example makes a perfectly wonderful illustration of exactly why that is, and also is a marvelous explanation of why what gets announced when it does depending on whether you are moving across (which will make column headings announced) versus down (which will get row headings announced).

My thanks for distilling this so very well.

Re: NVDA Not Talking

Ok, Steven, so we're now into serious troubleshooting mode, which
means we need a lot more info from you.
1) Version of Windows, ie, 7, 8, 10, 11, as well as build version. You
can get this info by running the winver command & copying/pasting its
output.
2) Sound cards on the machine, including any usb &/or bluetooth.
3) Could you please disable Jaws startup if not already done.
4) Please start NVDA. Does any sound play when starting?
5) Please turn on Narrator.
6) Please press windows key+r, then type sndvol & press enter.
7) Check your speaker volume to ensure it's at proper level, ie, not
0. Also check to ensure your speakers are not muted. Lastly, check to
see that the volume for NVDA is not too low or muted.
8) Ensure NVDA is running, then pres NVDA+ctrl+s. Now perhaps try
changing the audio output device.

There is another setting you may wish to check in control panel. This
is assuming Windows 10, your OS will likely differ. Go to the sound
aplet in Control panel.
9) Down arrow to the device NVDA is on.
10) Press tab until you hear properties & activate w/spacebar/enter.
11 Press ctrl tab to the advanced tab page.
12 Tab to "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this
device" & ensure it's unchecked.

Let's see where we're at.

Try another synthesizer.  You can run more than one screen-reader at
once.  If you try another one and you get speech, you will get speech
from both screen--readers at once.  Close one screen-reader,.

While I doubt this is the cause of the problem, the first thing to try
is NVDA key s.  Do you hear any speech saying anything like speech mode

after executing the command once, execute it two more times to be back

Re: NVDA Not Talking

So evidently the NVDA key control s didn't accomplish anything.

Let's not neglect the obvious.  With another screen-reader running, open the voice settings, control NVDA key v, and tab to the volume setting.  Is it correct?

Open the Windows volume control and tab to the NVDA volume setting there.  Having the NVDA volume set within NVDA is completely independent of the Windows volume control setting. Check with another screen-reader running at the same time as NVDA, to see what the Windows volume control setting is.  On my Windows 7 machine, the setting is somewhere around 8.  I doubt that higher versions of Windows would use a setting that is different or much different.

In NVDA itself, the default volume level may differ a lot from synthesizer to synthesizer.  I wouldn't recommend a level but see if it is reasonable, between about 40 and 90 roughly.

Also, you might have speech mode set to beeps somehow, that's what the high-pitched noise makes me think of. Hit NVDA-s, and speech mode will toggle between talk, beeps, and off.

My other thought is that NVDA is picking another sound card/device that's not what you're listening through. If you've got another sound device with an output hooked up, some USB microphones have headphone jacks for example, try hooking up to that and see if NVDA's coming through it. If so, you can hit ctrl-NVDA-s to get into the synthesizer settings, and change the sound device from in there.

Re: NVDA saying blank on empty lines

Tony Malykh

There are add-ons for this.

1. If you just don't like the word blank, you can use Phonetic Punctuation add-on. By default it replaces it with an earcon.

2. If you would like to skip blank lines automatically when you arrow up/down, you can achieve this with BrowserNav add-on. It only works in browsers and other browse mode documents, such as email programs.

Re: How setting heading rows and columns in Excel, and reading of those by NVDA, works . . .

Cearbhall O'Meadhra

  3. Check all of these items:

NVDA saying blank on empty lines

Don H

Running latest Win 10 and nvda. Looked through the user manual but can't find a way to have NVDA from saying blank on blank lines. Can someone please direct me to where the setting is?
Thanks

Re: How setting heading rows and columns in Excel, and reading of those by NVDA, works . . .

John Isige

Thanks, that did it! I had that set but I wonder if the problem was that I set it in the general configuration, i.e. in NVDA outside of Excel? I did apply and then save it, but I wonder if it didn't get carried over into the Excel profile? Well I set it up, saved the workbook, and hit ctrl-NVDA-c to save the current configuration while in Excel. Opening the workbook again works, so yay!

John,

Your table looks fine.

Have you set these three parameters in Document configuration in the excel profile?:

  1. Open an Excel worksheet to open the Excel profile;
  2. Press NVDA+Control+d for Document settings;
  3. Check all of these items:

   Tables

    row/column headings

   Cell co-ordinates;

However the code factory guys are blaming nvda, so who is at fault here, I can’t test as I have the nvda/sapi combo I got for $50 last year, not the sapi addon only. Actually, can I test this using the nvda only addon?

I don't know how much you might want to do to pursue the problem further.  One option, which will cost money, is to get the SAPI Vocalizer voices,  You may want to try the program to see if you have the same problem.

You can find it on this page:

There are the methods to try to correct the problem Brian discussed and then there is this possible solution that will cost you money.  But I'm making you aware of the option, if you aren't.  And you may want to test for the problem using the SAPI demo.
