Seeking Input on the Accessibility of the MySQL Workbench Software with NVDA

Humberto

hello everybody,

I am recently taking a course on database concepts in my university to fulfill my requirements for my Information Technology minor. our class is using the MySQL Workbench and server software from Oracle.

My question is: is this application for Windows accessible with JAWS or NVDA? Do I need anything I have to do to run MySQL workbench with one of these screen readers?

Today in class was the first day in which we were supposed to learn how to create models with tables and diagrams for our first database. However, all the input I get from the installed copy of JAWS on my lab computer are some empty listviews labeled, "Add tables," "Add routines" "Add users," "Add diagrams," and others. I can not seem to type in, or edit any columns, rows, or other data within the database model, as the instructor was explaining and telling us how to do it and what to select on what I assume are selectable controls in the GUI.

Are there any specific keyboard commands used in the MySQL workbench application that I should know? Are there any third party scripts that I can load that are available for JAWS?

On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being super accessible, how would anyone with experience with this application rate the its accessibility with JAWS and / or NVDA?

Any advice, feedback, lessons or just advice on how to get the instructor to accommodate for an alternative solution to the MySQL application will be greatly appreciated, as there is an assignment that I have to turn in using the MySQL software next Monday.

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

Humberto

can't send a message to a friend in New Jersey

Hi, everyone,

I just tried to send an email message to a friend in New Jersey. When I tried to send it, I got a message saying there were no aski characters in the address. I don't want to change the email address because I know it's the right one. Why is thunderbird giving me this error message?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi good people:
Can anyone be kind enough to send me the link for the download ot the
synthesiser called viavoice outloud? I am made to understadn that the
synth is obsolete, but I like it because it can be configured to sound
like eloquence. I used to have it, but I lost it when my flash drive
was stolen, and I didn't back it up on google drive or dropbox. I
tried out Koba speech, but i found out that I will need to pay for it,
and I don't have money for that. Added to that I don't like the
ESpeak synth that comes with NVDa. I don't understand the speech very
easily.
I am in trouble right now, and I need help. I am just managing to use
ESpeak with so much difficulty.
I look forward to your response.
I am ibrahim Ajayi from Nigeria.

I expect that the Below message should be of particular interest to some or perhaps many members of this list.  I haven't listened to any of the material but it appears that many subjects are covered in these free tutorials including use of NVDA.

The American Foundation for the Blind is pleased to announce Learn Tech, a technology access initiative that features free online tutorials to help people who are blind or visually impaired learn how to improve their computer and technology skills. The tutorials can be accessed at www.afb.org/learntech.

The newest tutorial offering for Learn Tech is a 10-part series on Using Google Docs and Google Drive with NVDA. Google Docs is a free, web-based application in which documents can be created, edited, and stored online. Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service that allows users to store files in the cloud, and share files with people who are working on the same project. NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) is a free screen reader for people who are blind or visually impaired.

When these tools are used together, computer users who are blind or visually impaired are able to use the computer for work or school without any additional, expensive software. These tools also allow for easy project collaboration with others at school or in the workplace, leveling the playing field.

Also available from Learn Tech are the previously released Learn NVDA free video tutorials that describe how to use the NVDA free and fully featured screen reader.

Additional tutorials will be added to Learn Tech over time. To learn more, or to share information with people who may be interested in using the tutorials, go to www.afb.org/learntech. Users are encouraged to provide feedback on the tutorials and  other training topics of interest in the feedback links.

Learn Tech tutorials were made possible with support from the Lions Club International Foundation, the Jessie Ball DuPont Fund, and the Consumer Technology Association Foundation. AFB is pleased to partner with these organizations to support technology literacy. Together, we are working to create a more accessible, inclusive world for people with vision loss.

If in word you type in (tm) it will convert it to the trademark symbol, and (c) does the same for copyright symbol, and (r) then implements registered symbol.

Hi David,

I recently wrote this myself for the Microsoft Word with NVDA module, available from http://www.nvaccess.org/shop/ (Hey, if I'm giving you the content, the least I can do is plug the product it's from).

  • To insert the Registered Trademark symbol, type control+alt+r or type (r)
  • To insert the Trademark symbol, type control+alt+t or type (tm)
  • To insert the Copyright symbol, type control+alt+c or type (c)

  • If you are interested in going a bit deeper with Microsoft Word and NVDA, I'd strongly recommend the Microsoft Word with NVDA module *smile*.

    Kind regards

    Quentin.

Re: where is controling audio ducking found?

    Quentin Christensen

Just to clarify for anyone reading the thread who hasn't looked into audio ducking with NVDA - the feature is available and it is an option - so you can use it if you choose.  It has three options:

    - "No ducking".  If you don't want to use audio ducking, leave the option set to this and NVDA will behave and interact with other audio sources as it ever has.
    - "Duck when outputting speech and sounds".  The volume of ALL sounds will be lowered only while NVDA is actually speaking.  This lets you have say background music or other sounds play loudly except when NVDA is talking.
    - "Always duck".  Other sounds will be ducked (or lower), whenever NVDA is running.  This ensures NVDA is able to be heard over other sounds, but the volume of say background music will be constant, rather than fading in or out as NVDA speaks.

    Kind regards

    Quentin.

Where is it usefull and what applications does it work best in.
I do know say if narator or another thing is running say nvda, I run something else say a game, sound is automatically cut, good I guess if speech is paramount, not if its a game using it meaning I need to turn off my screen reader or a skype call or in fact if I load narator and then nvda or need something like a second sound I am recording.

Yes but that seems not to be permanent, at least not on my machine, you actually need to go to the control panel of 10 and set it there.
Maybe I've changed some other parameter that disables other software setting themselves as default?
I get the same thing using Firefox, and asI say curtana or as my friend calls her sultana, still uses Edge, personally, I'd shove edge over the edge tomorrow.

    Dan,

Once you've got Chrome open and focus is on that window:

    * Hit ALT
    * Hit Down Arrow
    * Hit S (the first three steps will cause Chrome settings to open in its own
    tab)
    * Search for "Make Google Chrome the default browser", which should take you
    to that button
    * Activate the button, close the tab

Thanks Bobby for suggesting the AnyBurn software.  I attempted it and managed to burn an audio book to CD, however the AnyBurn software doesn’t seem to take all the files to the disc, only the MP3 files.  Therefore, I don’t have a Daisy audio book on the CD, just an MP3 audio book.  That works for me at this point, but I’d rather have a Daisy book for all of its navigation features, so if any other suggestions exist out there please keep them coming.

    Once again, thanks Bobby.

Hi all.  I had a process down-pat for burning Daisy books to CD, however since the latest Win10 update the process has changed.  Do any of you have a step by step for the new process?  I have wrecked two CDs trying to figure it out.

Well, If I ended up having to get a new computer. I'd get an apple because it and win ten both have audio ducking. I got used to hearing it being used on I devices and my friend's apple computer. I'm going to have fun adjusting to it being on win ten if I ended up having ten! Maybe it's just me. I like audio ducking to be with apple. Same with Seri witch ten got Kortanna witch is a copy cat of seri!

I've updated my own file on Webvisum based on what's been said in this thread and what I've found on their own website.  If there is anything that is incorrect, since folks here are the voices of experience, please let me know.  I requested an invitation several hours ago and nothing has been forthcoming, so I am presuming that this is not an automated process behind the scenes.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do not already have a Webvisum account, which is free, you must request an invitation to get one here:  http://www.webvisum.com/main/invitationrequest

There is a 3-field form asking for your name, e-mail address, and that you enter a comment of some sort in the third field.  I requested an invitation via the website earlier this afternoon and have yet to get a response back.  You can apparently get an invitation generated by any existing WebVisum user.

After getting the invitation you register here:

                 http://www.webvisum.com/en/main/register

Apparently, the developers of Webvisum finally decided to release a digitally signed version of this add-on and updated the version number to 0.9.5.  You can get it here:

                https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/webvisum/

yet it does not turn up in an add-ons search on “WebVisum” (regardless of whether you mix case or not).

A programmer named James Scholes made a version of the Webvisum Firefox add-on that is digitally signed so that newer versions of Firefox can install it that’s based on the version 0.9.2.  See the article entitled, Webvisum CAPTCHA Solver Returns to Firefox, on blindbargains.com for full details.

The direct download link for his XPI install file is:  http://jscholes.net/webvisum-0.9.2-fx.xpi

No kidding. It's been that way since Vista or I know for a fact windows 7. XP you used to be able to change your start up sounds. Although I like the start up sound for 7 and ten. But it's a shame you can't set the sound to your liking.

One of the most annoying things about 10 is that it seems it won't let you put your own sound in without a considerable amount of hacking about, it just denies access to it. Seems a bit odd as a sound would hardly be of any harm to windows, unless you replaced it with something rude, but I think you can still alter pictures so why not the sound.

I suppose one could just put in a small sound player in the start up sequence to play it, but it would need to be a player which can have a hidden mode of course.
I used to use something called Playany, but it seems not to work from Windows 7 onwards.

I'd like to thank those who sent me invitations for WebVisum.  I am registered at this point.  It turns out that my request via their web form was also answered this morning at 8:22 AM, and they wanted more information from me before an account could be opened.

While response from the WebVisum developers to invitation requests isn't anything close to immediate, it's not not-existent or weeks-late, either.
