I have a very vague memory of the topic being discussed before but when does it say 0?

Re: Customizing the NVDA launch shortcut key?

As noted, setting a keystroke to launch NVDA, is actually a Windows function, and you can do the same thing for any other program (or indeed, anything else you can create a desktop shortcut for).

So, being a Windows function is basically why it isn't covered more extensively in the user guide.

Given it does come up from time to time, and may be some people's first time using or even looking for such an option, if it is felt to be worth adding a bit more to the User Guide on it, it would be worth someone writing up an issue for it.

Meanwhile, and in any case, I'll make a note to write something up for a future version of In-Process :)

Hi

It will not show if you are using a portable version of nvda it only shows on the installer version.

It is found under the synthesizer settings by pressing ctrl + nvda key + letter S then tab down to audio ducking mode.

Only in the installer version.

Shortcut key is if using the installer version to change ducking modes is nvda key + shift key + the letter D

mine, when I hit this key combo it enables the splitting, pressing again puts NVDA back in the middle.

Re: sound splitter addon

Hi Don,

As noted in another thread, an alternative is pressing Alt+NVDA+S provided that it doens't conflict with other add-ons.

By the way, I figured out the problem: when closing NVDA, NVDA's own volume is not set correctly (that is, audio output is not restored to both audio channels). I'm testing a solution and plan to release a fix around the time NVDA 2022.1 beta 1 is released as I have suspended add-on releases until that time as to not overwhelm the community and myself; rest assured that I know what's going on and will do everything I can to resolve this issue.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: sound splitter addon suggestion

Hi,

This is already possible: Mono Audio, a setting provided by Windows where you can hear stereo sounds through a single audio channel.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: sound splitter addon suggestion

Nermin

Hi,

another suggestion for this would be to experiment with panning, or a way of having one of the sounds left in stereo, and the other one just left or right, if that's at all possible.

So, for instance, Zoom or whatever app would come of both speakers, while NVDA would be in your left or right ear, depending on which of your ears is prefered.

One could pan whichever sound needs to come out of both ears, maybe to also factor in hearing loss or acoustic preference.

Regards,

Nermin

So if you want to simply disable it you need to go into the addon settings and uncheck the box to split sounds

Re: sound splitter addon

Hi Don,

The last bit you provided (disabling the add-on does not restore sounds to both channels) confirms the hypothesis I had about the add-on code. I'll look into this as a high priority issue.

It does.

Many don't know about it because the default pop up modifier is always CTRL + ALT, until and unless after holding the CTRL key during assignment you hit SHIFT, in which case it automatically changes to CTRL + SHIFT.

Definitely on of those "little known hidden bits under Windows."

Actually I’ve used control shift plus what ever as well. It’s actually quite handy. If you want to though use control plus what ever an easier way is just enter the  letter or other key with out control plus. I was taught that about 20 years ago. I’m sure that still holds  true.

Hi Sally

It’s actually a Windows shortcut key combination which is why it is not in the Input Gestures and you can change it to something else if you like but first you need to ensure the key combination you want to use is not already assigned to something else.  The keystroke will be Control+alt+? Where ? is a letter of your choice.  Just try pressing the key combination you would like to use and see if anything is run, if nothing happens, it’s probably OK to use that key combination.

To change the keystroke, move focus to the NVDA desktop icon, press Alt+enter to open the Properties dialog, then tab twice to move to the “Shortcut Hotkey field”.  Now press delete to remove the currently defined shortcut command reference, then press just the letter part of the command you want to use, Windows will automatically add the Control+Alt+ part, then tab out of the field.  Press shift+tab to move back into the Hotkey field and check it’s correct.  Tab down to OK and press enter when you are happy.

Cheers

Sally,

The answer to that really does depend on your knowledge of the use of Shortcuts under Windows.  The NVDA Commands Quick Reference, as the very first entry in the Basic NVDA Commands table, discusses Control+alt+n as the start/restart command for NVDA, and in the description column states:  "Starts or restarts NVDA from the Desktop, if this Windows shortcut is enabled during NVDA's installation process. This is a Windows specific shortcut and therefore it cannot be reassigned in the input gestures dialog."

If you already know how WIndows keyboard shortcuts and assigning them works, this pretty much tells you that you must reassign at the level of Windows, which means in this case tweaking the shortcut key option for the desktop shortcut.

If, however, you are not familiar with Windows keyboard shortcuts and how they are assigned to desktop shortcut icons, then you wouldn't have a clue.

This is one of those instances where Windows background is presumed.
