I would report it there, for that add on, if the repo exists for such, if not reference the add on on nvda’s github if applicable.

Good luck.

Do you mean has the problem been reported on Github?  I don't know.  I suppose that is where you would report problems with add-ons but I haven't seen that discussed.

Gene,

I am having issues, too, but not the same ones you are.  The CTRL + SHIFT + Number (1-4, or 5 or 6) are doing nothing.  All my add-ons are up to date per add-on updater.  I have NVDA 2021.3.1 and Thunderbird 96 under Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H2.

I have even checked the input gestures when I have a Thunderbird message reading window open and there are none shown for what CTRL + SHIFT + numbers one through 4 are supposed to do, and the two for 5 and 6 are there and as the documentation defines them, but they do nothing.

I have split this off to a separate topic, because it must be addressed as a clearly defined and separate issue.  All further discussion about Mozilla Apps Enhancements and problems anyone is currently having should be occurring on this topic, not the one about TheeQuinn's reissue of her MS-Access with NVDA tutorial.

I just tested it and it didn't read the address.  The message I tested it on was archived.

I also checked and I am using the current version of the add-on.  No updates were listed when I used the update checker.

I hope other people check this.

Gene,

I am not certain whether the "this machine" in this message is your Windows 7 machine or a Windows 10 or 11 machine, but if it's a Win7 box, I am begging you, don't use it as a comparator anymore.

The number of divergences from 7 to 10, and more importantly in the add-ons themselves that have been made over the years to gracefully support Windows 10, do occasionally break things under Windows 7.  Although NVDA itself is still stated as compatible with Windows 7 quite a few add-ons are explicitly not, or at least not in their entirety.

The above really doesn't apply strictly to Gene, either.  Anyone using Windows 7, at this point in time, cannot reliably use that ecosystem as being indicative of what will happen under later versions of Windows.  And for some add-ons, noteably those of Joseph Lee, the same will be true for Windows 8.1 even in advance of its end of life.

All development these days has to have its emphasis on the two versions of Windows that "have a future" and those are Windows 10 and 11.  It's now less than a year until the sunset on Windows 8.1.

I'm not sure if they do.  I can't generalize from my experience on one machine and others can verify this or say it isn't generally the case.  Using the Mozilla Enhancements add-on with NVDA, the read address command doesn't work properly.  At least on this machine, it does read the address, but it archives the message.  Evidently, it lets the a command reach the program so both things occur at once.

I hadn't tried the command until this discussion and that's what happens in my case.

Being informed and accessing links in comments in MS Word with NVDA

Sylvie Duchateau

Hello all,

I often work on Word documents with my colleagues and we use the “insert comment” functionality to comment a document.

While the NVDA command NVDA+shift+C is really useful to read comment, it does not tell if the person who commented inserted a link in her / his comment.

I only could find a way to access the links in using right clic, or shift+F10 and choose ”modify comment”.

Do you know if there is a better way to be informed that the commenter inserted a link in the comment and to access this link or link url?

Thank you in advance

Best

Sylvie

Re: Thunderbird And New GMail Settings: What To Expect

Oops, there was one thing I forgot to mention, and that is that while the steps are specific to Thunderbird as far as it goes, the situation as a whole is not.  If you are using any email client where you previously set up Gmail access not using OAUTH2 authentication, you will be required to do so under those clients, too.

Google is finally enforcing its chosen authentication method across the board.

Ron,

Nimer and I thank you, profusely, both for having sought permission before posting and for offering this information.  If it does not put pretty much all minds to rest about this, I don't know what would.  The necessary tweaks are far from impossible to make, and you've given excellent step-by-step instructions for making them.

I am not locking this topic, but I would request that any follow-ups be only requests for clarification in regard to the instructions if you feel you need them.  This is appropriate because other readers might have the same question.

But it cannot become a discussion of Gmail, Google, and OAUTH2 authentication.  That is entirely off-topic for this group in addition to being something we all have to deal with that's not going to change.

Thunderbird And New GMail Settings: What To Expect

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,
(always check with the owners for this type of off topic message before sending. I have obtained permission. If you have any further questions, it might be a good idea to e-mail me off list at aa2vm@...)

This topic has dominated blind oriented technical lists for the past two days, so I thought I would explain just what I did and what happens.

Actually there is nothing to it.
1.  As has been described on this and other lists, go into your account settings and change the password authentication from 'normal password' to 'oauth2.  This is a combo box and you may have to open the combo box with alt + down arrow. After the combo is open, use up/down arrow keys to change the setting.
2.  Once this setting has been changed, just exit the dialogue with control + W.
3.  Then try receiving and sending mail. (be sure to have your password handy before you do so.)
4.  You will be prompted to enter your existing GMail account by first entering your e-mail address and clicking next and then entering your existing password.
5.  You will then be prompted to sign in.
6.  When you click the sign in button, you will be immediately taken to a Google security page and prompted to allow Thunderbird to access your Google account.
7.  When you click the allow button, you can then access your server using your new settings.
8.  you must allow for both sending and receiving; so you will get the same prompt when you first try receiving and then sending mail.
9.  After these two allowances, the process is complete and unless you change something in your program--such as your e-mail address and/or password, Google will not prompt you any more.
10.  You will also get two warning messages from Google telling you that a new program has accessed your GMail account and to take appropriate steps if you don't recognize this activity. Of course you can ignore this for your own changes.

...and while I am at it, I might as well include how to change the password authentication setting in more detail.

To access/change password and security settings.
1.  Press alt + T for tools followed by S for account settings.
2. Turn off virtual cursor (JAWS insert + Z NVDA insert + space bar.)
3.  On my system, I am placed in the tree view of accounts.
4.  If you are not placed on the tree view of accounts tab or shift tab to focus the tree view.
5.  move up/down the tree view to highlight the root of the tree view which references your account. (in this case it should say something referring to GMail.)
6.  You must change both the password/security settings in both incoming and outgoing servers.
7.  For some unknown reason, they place the outgoing server on the root of the tree.
8.  Sift tab  until you hear outgoing/smpt  server settings 'edit.' and press space bar to activate the dialogue.
9.  Tab until you get to the combo box that says 'authentication method: normal password' reference an use alt + down arrow to open the combo box and up/down arrow keys to change from 'normal' to oauth2.
10. Tab to OK and press enter.
11. Then Tab to the root of the GMail reference again and press down arrow key once to move to server settings.
12. Tab a number of times until you reach the combo box that says 'authentication method: normal password.'
13. Use alt + down arrow to open the combo box and Use arrow keys to change this to 'oauth2'

So there you have  it: this is a one time issue unless you change your GMail address or password.

Potential Bug(s) with Mozilla Apps Enhancements Add-On

Gene NZ has an excellent Thunderbird tutorial on his website, accessibilitycentral.net, here: http://accessibilitycentral.net/accessible%20email%20client%20mozilla%20thunderbird.html

His section on Best Viewing Options may prove particularly helpful.  However, if you're someone who wants quick and easy access to the From field frequently, I would not set headers to normal, as he suggests, but instead set it to all.  That way the from field is always on display in your reading window.

Re: MS Access Series Re-upload(no more loud music, better quality, transcripts)

My apologies to TheeQuinn.  My grumpy comments had nothing to do with the text of her message nor the quality of her tutorials.  I've heard them and I agree that they are very good.  It's just a thing I have about having to close the message and read, again, the. description to find out who sent the message.

Sorry, TheeQuinn.

Hey Everyone!!
I know that I have not been posting my regular videos for a while but this was why. It took me a while, but I have re-edited and re-uploaded all 5 videos of the How to use Microsoft Access with NVDA series. I have upgraded the quality, i took out the loud music, and transcripts are now available for them(I am not finished with all of them though, but they will be finished by the end of the coming week, I promise). I worked really hard on these and I really appreciate your feedback. this goes to show that I do value your feedback. Below is a link to a short video that explains how you can access the videos an their transcripts quickly. Also, below is a link to my website.

Should the remote server not perhaps rather be hosted on the nv-access server? That would provide greater reliability of its availability.

Since NVDA Remote is an Add-On not created or maintained by NVAccess, this is not likely to happen.

Also, the popularity of NVDA Remote has spawned a network of available servers, only some of which have been noted in this topic.  It is highly unlikely that most of them will not be up and running just fine at any given moment in time.

I thought I remembered someone posting, way back when, a link to a centralized list of what was, at that time, all NVDA Remote Servers in service.  And I don't think it was the nvra.io site.

Re: NVDARemote is Down

You know, when anyone offers a URL, I fully expect that those on the receiving end will check it out via web browser, first.

That's what I did for nvra.io and found an extensive list of actual NVDA Remote Server addresses there.  That's what I expect anyone to do.  Not every resource offered is "plug n play."
